    "They told me of the Yagas... in the grim city of Yugga, on the rock Yuthla, by the River Yogh, in the land of Yagg." Now THAT is some grim alliteration.

      There ain't near enough Robert E. Howard. I never saw this story come up, although I've checked out tons of Robert E. Howard. I just thought about the book, remembered the name, and it popped up in search. This has been up at least 2 years, yet it never came up in Robert E. Howard searches. But I read it as a boy. I remember loving it.

    I watched a video in which a group of people using a computer program, designed for analysing written works, proved once and for all that R E Howard definately wrote this story. The reason it was doubted was because its style seems almost unfinished and not Howard at his best. What the group also showed from this analysis was that Almuric was only the second draft and Howard had not got around to completing the third draft, and giving the work the final polish it needed.

    • @TheEldritchArchives
      @TheEldritchArchives  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Interesting! I will have to check out this video! I discussed this very debate on the SFF Audio Podcast - the episode about Almuric should be coming out in a few months. We came to the conclusion that the first half and most of the second half was written by REH but the very end of the story was probably altered by Otis Adelbert Kline. The final resolution were Esau brings "civilized society" to the Guras and thereby improves their culture is pretty much the opposite of Howard's usual thesis that barbarians are actually more civilized/honorable than civilized people. So I take the view that Almuric was mostly written by REH but with some additions to make it publication ready from his manager or an editor.

    • @MikeWhiskyTango
      @MikeWhiskyTango 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@TheEldritchArchives I wish I could recall the video. I'm pretty sure it was you tube. It was almost 6-7 years ago. They first used the program on several other known works and other authors whose authenticity was beyond question. The final printout resembled a star or asterix with the various grammar lines and word useage , style lines projecting outward. They then overlaid that with the output from Howard's other stories and the matchup was beyond question, especially when compared to the other authors output 'stars' which were completely different.
      An interesting thing about that program was that used it on all Agatha Christie books and it could predict whether the murderer was male or female based on whether 'water' was a prominent feature in the books. I think if their was a lake or a sea or a gulf it was a male murderer, something like that.

    There's a comics magazine called Epic, which is a Marvel magazine. I just bought an issue and it's the only Epic mag I've owned. It's vol 1 issue 5. There's a story called Almuric. On the first page of the story it says "Based on the novel by Robert E. Howard".
    The story is separated in two parts. One part in the beginning of the magazine and the other at the end. I never the book, by the way. I'm not sure if there's more to this Almuric story in other Epic magazines.

    I feel almost guilty for loving this story so much after hearing that REH didn't put much work into and didnt like writing it...
    but godamn i think this might even be my favorite REH story oddly enough. It just goes to show you how absolutely amazing REH's writing abilities were when he can churn something like this out on a semi-whim and just leave some drafts behind, and yet still have it be this engaging and so far superior to "modern" stories.

    Thank you for uploading this series. It's great. The audio books are all awesome. I enjoyed all the other book and film analysis videos too. I have one question about the authorship of Almuric. After listening to this story, it seems to me that Almuric is not a Howard story. The style is so different from his other works. I read that the book was serialized after his death by Ottis Kline. Kline wrote a number of planetary romance books such as swords of Mars, outlaws of Mars and planet of peril. The plot line, main character and writing style of Almuric has more in common with Klines novels than REHs. Perhaps Kline redrafted or rewrote Almuric from a Fragments or early draft or at worse wrote Almuric and put REHs name on it. Interested to hear your thoughts after watching your analysis of Howard's writing style.

      Howard's females are definitely a step above the average women characters in many pulp stories. He has lots of good femme fatales, but I personally really like his female adventurers like Dark Agnes or Helen Tavrel. I just recorded the Isle of Pirate's Doom which is a Helen Tavrel story and is pretty fun. Also, Gods of Bal Sagoth is coming up on this channel too, which has a great femme fatale empress in in.
