Liking the short pin ball a lot more here. I like to see that nice continuous arc when I throw it. Knocks the pins over better that way

I have my PSO drill my balls the same for most of my balls. I prefer to control my ball motions with speed, rev, and hand release adjustments, so the only differences are the covers and cores. However, for my stronger asymm ball, I tend to get it drilled pin down, so it's more controllable while still driving through the pins. I may try drilling a Magic Gem, Perfect Mindset, or BW 2.0 Hybrid pin up for the top of my bag to see how that works out.

I like different layouts that will force me to move and make me more versatile when needed and be confident with the move

I like to have a mix of layouts, but I have a favorite pin up and a pin down layout that I mostly use. Every once in a while I will go with something different.

I'm a big hybrid fan, and currently looking at two TNT Infused balls, one to play further left on the burn and the other play more inside with a dull surface on the fresh and maybe transition.

Layout absolutely matters period and can change the core dynamics of a ball pretty considerably either layout to layout or even from the base core stats. Also when you drill any ball that's symmetrical the core becomes asymmetrical! The video and my prior experience proves this for me!

layout makes a laughably small difference honestly. changing the surface is the best way to change ball reaction.

I have a standard layout I use on most of my equipment, but I will use stronger Pin to PAP distances if I’m drilling something for a specific purpose, like heavier volume

I have a little story to tell, 4 years ago I bought a Brunswick vintage vapor zone and gave it to the pro shop and he put my normal layout on it ( 55 x 4 1/4 x 35 ) and I threw this ball for a while but never really liked the ball, I felt like it wasn't maching up to me and my game, and yes I tried different surface prep but still never liked this ball and so it sat in the basement for about 3.5 years. Then I watched a mo pinel video on the you tubes and he was talking about short pin layouts and that got me interested in wanting to try a short pin ball so I took this vapor zone to the pro shop and plugged and redrilled to a short pin ( 2 1/4 from pap ). The surface prep from factory was 500 compound. I'm the type of guy that likes to play up the boards and so I changed the surface to 500 slip agent and man what a difference, this ball went from a ball that I didn't like to a ball that is the first ball out of the bag. It is really sweet. I was using a iq tour and averaging 190's but after switching to the S.P. vapor zone I am now currently averaging 211. This ball gets through the heads clean and doesn't over react on the backend and with that slip agent finish it stores alot of energy and goes through the pins with real intention, you can really see the difference compared to all the other equipment I have, know I am wondering if short pin layouts on slightly different balls could make a even greater impact, I have the itch to experiment, do you guys think I just got lucky and found a ball and layout that worked or do you think this could be repeatable with other equipment, I am curious of your thoughts and want to know more about short pin balls. And to be totally honest I don't really understand all the dinamics of a short pin ball and am really wondering what would happen if I went even shorter of a pin like 1 1/2 to pap?

It all depends on cores, covers, and the strength of the ball. A ball like a Proton I tend to have a 2.5 ish inch pin on it, but a shiny assym ball like the clone or Absolute I will have a 4-5 inch pin. And then balls like the Xponent, aka middle of bag balls I will have a 3-4 inch pin

All my balls have different layouts to optimize the ball shape that each ball is better suited for. I will change my speed, and release depending on the lane conditions, and choose a ball with the layout i think best suites the conditions or shot. I use both Asy, and sym balls in my 4 ball arsenal. I also throw 3 different weights of ball, again to maximize the shape of the ball. I will shop by numbers, RG, Diff, InterDiff. Sometimes lower weight balls have a more desired numbers depending on the ball motion I am looking for. Of course there is also the surface, I use that to fine tune the ball to conditions, and maintain the reaction i desire

its actually kinda funny how similar the balls are. They're almost on top of each other, very subtle differences. surface and coverstock are way more impactful than layout.

Except my Urethane asym & sym balls I've been having the pin 1" to 11/4" from the PAP. I trust my proshop guy to place where he thinks best along that arc. I've been told that the ball would not hook much drilled like that but it does. It just doesn't flare. League shots depending on the night will cover 15 to 20 boards, It does get to the edge, On sport shots like Kegal Eiffel tower I'm able to roll up 13 to 16 and have that finish hard into the pocket.

As a new bowler I am still learning how to get my hand around the ball so I can get a true read on my PAP. Once I have that I can work out my best layout. Out the moment the Australian Storm rep has given me a couple of layouts that are working well.

Not sure what you mean by getting your hand around the ball. Hopefully you’re not talking about getting your hand around the ball to hook it. That can get you into some trouble later on.

The cover dictates overall ball motion and layouts fine tune it. The cover touches the lane so it has the most influence on ball reaction.
