Can't believe I missed this last month. Great match up of two of my favorite new distillers. I've have both bottles and was ultra sad to say good bye to the last drop of New Riff Sherry finished Rye. My wife and I were just drawn back that bottle time and time again. The painful thing is we will never see a bottle of that again. Unless they make it a standard like the Balboa Rye. I do feel that the Sagamore Cognac Cask Rye Whiskey hedged the Sherry finished just a little though. Cheers.
Just bought 6 different expressions of New Riff and the Sagamore Double oak & 9 yr. Both distilleries offer bottles from $60-$70 and are hitting it out of the ball park. This is how good whiskey should taste and cost. Forget chasing allocated overpriced bottles.
@keithpetersen560 wow this is an old one. Sagamore is a rye though and I have yet to find any rye that I like. Just about the bourbon. I don't want that mint or pine needle aspect showing up in anything.
Was able to do a side by side of these myself. Felt the New Riff had a slightly richer palate, both had a great nose and the Sagamore had a slightly longer finish. For me, both were hitters. It’s a shame the New Riff is practically impossible to get, but the Sagamore is a more than worthy sub.
I had the New Riff in a double blind flight tonight and it beat out some hitters. Including some Four Gate Perry Perry and Calumet 16. It is an outstanding pour.
I was lucky enough to get the New Riff, absolutely love it. Just a little friendly M&D tip….New Riff like to HIDE a few bottles of the Sherry finished in their gift shop sometimes. You just gotta look for it. Cheers
I have no idea how I missed this episode! I have turned into a New Riff Fanboy. They just started coming here to Colorado and man has it blown up in the bourbon community here. One store had a store pick SB come it. All sold out in 1 day. It was crazy! I dont know how it is there. But do you think they have the potential to be one of the powerhouses out there once they get more time behind the distillery?
I make it a point to go to the Sagamore Distillery during Thanksgiving (It’s my bday gift to myself), I’ll be looking for that bottle in the bottle shop
Double Bass Episode Idea. Bardstown Founders vs. Bardstown Goose Island. Maybe a tripe bass with the Sagamore Imperial Stout even thought it’s a Rye not a Bourbon.
as someone who has pedro xeminez sherry, regular sherry and 3 different ports in my house.. i can say, the pedro ximenez, is by far the most thick and syrupy of them all
So the New Riff 6 year Malted Rye I thought was good but rather surprisingly needs a lot of focus to pick out the details as it's a subtle sipper. Surprisingly because every NR I've had has been ready to drink at uncorking and gets even better after a month of opening. So it really didn't surprise me that for their first finished release they used the sherry on it AND let it go at barrel strength, ala their single barrels. Damn, I wish these New Riff special editions were just a bit more available. Thanks for the FOMO Jason!
I've had I want to say 5 or 6 bottles of New Riff, shelfers and picks, varying proofs, and they've all turned into get drunk juice bottles or gifts to other whiskey dudes. I keep buying them hoping something will click for me but it doesn't happen. Sagamore on the other hand is in my top 2. I wasn't feeling the Sherry over the Port however.
@@TheMashandDrum I've only had samples of the ryes and they didn't do much for me. They reminded me of Bulleit and thats just some craze that I won't get at all
I got the Sagamore the day after I saw a review but I’m thinking I really need to spend more time hanging around New Riff. I’m a 25 minute drive away and I keep intending to go and just don’t. I think it’s the 11 year old who’s always with me that stops it. She does come with me to liquor stores though. 😂
Yes you can say that. But because the secondary barrel is a used barrel, some folks don't see it as a true maturation during that time. To me ..good whiskey is good whisky
@@TheMashandDrum thanks for the insight! Great review, I love the Sagamore Double Oak, was considering the sherry or port finished, but now I’m gonna need to track down that New Riff.

Have them both! Love them both!
Great price on both bottles
I was lucky enough to snag one of the New Riff Sherry finish bottles at launch. I loved it so much that I secured three backups
Love the use of the black glencairns. Too often, the color is a dead giveaway on blind comparisons. Great review. Thx
Amazing ryes Jason, thanks for the review. I'm a Sagamore fanboy in general but would love to get my hands on that New Riff after this

I'm a fan of new riff, I would like to see them do a double oaked variation to compare to Woodford Reserve and Old Forester 1910.
Can also compare to the double oak Sagamore, which is fantastic.

Awesome review. My mouth was watering hearing those flavors.
Was fortunate to get a bottle of the New Riff back in the spring.
Just snagged one from Justin's House of Bourbon in Lexington, KY. Excited to crack it open.
Love New Riff. The Malted Rye is amazing. Missed out on the Sherry but picking up T50 crystal malt this weekend and I cannot wait.
I love what new riff is doing, I have a 6 yr malted rye which I thought was great too. Thanks, cheers. World Series killing me, Go Phils in game 6&7

Excellent.
Great video. Jeff is going to love this video!
Hahaha am I surprised?
@@jeffreywack no, but you might be trying to find a backup :)
Totally agree on that new riff! Great bottle
I’d love to see Nee Riff Malted Rye vs Smoke Wagon Malted Rye! Great video, I love both NR and Sagamore
Great review, picking up Sagamore tommorrow (on hold), love sherry & port in my bourbon & scotchs. Great intro & ending music 👍
Im looking hard for that NR
Just picked up Sagamore today.
I make it a point to go to the Sagamore Distillery during Thanksgiving (It’s my bday gift to myself), I’ll be looking for that bottle in the bottle shop
Anything New Riff Rye is a BUY!!!
Whiskey of the year contender!!!!!
Have you had Midnight Cask from High Bank?
The new riff is soo good

Commenting just to say. Pedro xeminez sherry is lit!

Im with ya Anthony on the bourbons. I don't get into their bourbons at all, however I do love their rye whiskeys. The Malted above all.

We have been looking for that New Riff for months! Is the Sagamore their own distillate?
Still a blend. All their own stuff is coming in the next couple years.

could you tell the difference between a sherry finish vs a bourbon with a drop of sherry in it?
I think so. Sherry is pretty strong
So dumb question, if something is aged 4 years, then rebarreled for an additional 18 months, is it accurate to say that it’s now aged 5 1/2 years?
Yes you can say that. But because the secondary barrel is a used barrel, some folks don't see it as a true maturation during that time. To me ..good whiskey is good whisky

LOL, I was typing my comment that you didn't blend them and then you did!!!!!!!!!!!! Call me happy!!
I'll probably never even lay eyes on one of these. Kinda ends it right there.
Nice review but now the hunting season starts 🥃
