@Brian Babin Part of the reason I love that speech though is that he doesn't ask for help to survive the battle, just for his request for revenge to be granted. And he ends it saying "and if you won't, then to hell with you." It's a great moment showing how outmatched they are that he is willing to pray, but even in that, he still says he will do it alone if need be.

The best part of this movie is how they use the "Riddle of Steel" as motif throughout the movie in which Conan learns the answer after his tremendous ordeal. His father told him he could trust steel above all, Thulsa Doom showed him that steel was weak compared to the hand that wields it and flesh was stronger. But Conan learns that the strongest of all forces was the will power to persevere and overcome.

Hi guys back again. Just need to clear up one of two of my comments made. William Smith was in 'Any Which Way you Can' not "But Loose" and Arnie was NOT a judge in the 1981 Mr Olympia, he was a promoter, but had a lot of sway with the judges whom he knew quite well and did bat for Franco to win apparently and I meant to say "gyno" not "polumboism". So my bad.

Been watching Conan since I was 4 (since my Dad loved it and at that time we had a shop that rented out VHS and we wrangled a copy). I still miss that original theatrical cut. The ending is substantially different (no princess at all) and the music played at different parts.
Each frame of this movie is like a Frank Frazetta painting come to life. Aesthetically (visually and musically) one of the greatest movies ever made.

And for anyone interested,Conan takes place in 10,000 BC. You can check out information on it by looking up Cthulhu timelines of which the Conan stories were loosely connected.
But man,82',was the best year for films of all time. The amount of heat movies that year is unlikely to be equaled any time soon. Conan,Blade Runner,Dark Crystal,Star Trek 2,E.T, Poltergeist,Tron,The Thing,Koyaanisqatsi, The Road Warrior,48 Hours,Gandhi, and plenty of others. It's really crazy when you look into it.

Definitely the best sword and sorcery movie ever made. Hands down. Im honestly not sure why it has been so hard to translate Howards stories about Conan. Its an eminently filmable series.
Also note: the reboot with Jason Mamoa was not as good as this, but it was SO much better than Destroyer. Its a shame it didnt get some traction.

22:00 min mark. I think sword and sandal movies came back because of the fantasy movie star wars. Conan to me was a medieval star wars journey with darth vader james earl jones as a much better version of vader. Imagine vader learning he does not need a sword but rather his mind powers.

  • @Thagomizer

If you want to read the original R. E. Howard stories, you have quite a few options open to you. The best choice, IMHO, is the three volume Conan collection put out by Del Rey. The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian, The Bloody Crown of Conan, and The Conquering Sword of Conan. Howard's original stories are great reads, and if you haven't read him, you'll be in for a treat. He's only the second most influential fantasy writer aside from Tolkien, and reading his work will leave you with doubt as to why.
What you will quickly quickly learn is that this movie is very much Miius' vision and not Howard's, but it does draw upon the themes, motifs, placenames, etc. of Howard's Hyborean age rather well. Several elements of this movie are based on little snippets a plot points from Howard stories (like the Tower of the Elephant, Queen of the Black Coast, Red Nails, and A Witch Shall be Born), but used in different contexts, and other moments are based either on non-Howard Conan stories (like The Thing in the Crypt), or non-Conan Howard stories (like Worms in the Earth and the Kull stories).

Franco Columbos won in 1976 and 1981. In 1975 Arnold won, as seen in "Pumping Iron"., and was retired until showing up for the 1980 one.And yes, 1980 and 1981 mr Olympia was the most controversial ones i think. Zane reportedly threw his trophy against the wall backstage, he felt that Arnold had tricked him into the competition, after an injury, and felt duped by him. I was not there, but judging from pictures and film from the events, they were both handed a gift. Franco had a noticeble gyno chest, and one leg was smaller than the other one, and he placed higher than the Quadfather Tom Platz with improved upper body, and a ripped Padilla.... ?

1:29:03 Just like the Star Wars movies. Once ESB had laid the final foundations of the Star Wars universe, Lucas decided that he could put any old crap on the screen and dumb down the writing for the little kids, because the brand could sell itself, especially on the merchandising side of things. He even said to Kurtz that he didn't have to make ESB as good as he did because the film would've made just as much money.
Oh, and the model on the cover of the Barbarian video games was Page 3 girl Maria Whittaker.

Cheers, I was wondering who did the poster. I think Barbarian may come from Greek as we say it the same way to describe "Less than civilized person." Varvare, Varvaros. I once looked it up and I think that is where the word originated. Could be wrong like I was with the poster.

It's an interesting film that isn't really like the Conan stories. It takes bits and pieces from them and combines them with King Kull stuff. It has the spirit though and Millus does a great job putting it together. The music really helps and is one of the best fantasy soundtracks even made.
Malafakka has done a fantastic video series breaking down all the visual storytelling this film does so well. Many people have thought it's nothing more than a mindless action flick but that couldn't be further from the truth. There is far to much to go into but an amazing example is the fight near the end in the graveyard after Conan is saved by his love. He discovered the riddle of steel through the film and all his steps towards that are shown in the fight. His father said it was steel. He was wrong so Conan focused his attacks on his father's sword. Doom told him it was flesh. He was wrong so then Conan tears down the flesh. The real answer was willpower and he crosses his swords in front of his loves pyre to thank her for teaching him. It's a great scene and things like that are all throughout the film instead of giving expository dumps. Midnight's Edge has also done some good Conan videos as well. Still waiting for the true Conan adaption, aside from some great comics, but in this woke day and age it wouldn't go over well with some people.

The American version is distributed by Universal, not 20th Century, and then once the movie starts you don't give ANY clues what's supposed to be happening on screen.
