Cost Of Living in Cambodia 2023 | You won't believe Siem Reap is this cheap!

  • In this video, I’ll explain what we spend on living in Siem Reap, Cambodia as a couple, and I’ll also break it down so you can see what the same lifestyle would cost for a single person. I’ll explain how I arrived at the costs for each of the items so you can adjust them based on your preferences and lifestyle.
    After I go through the monthly cost of living expenses, I’ll make a projection of how it all adds up for a year so you can look at what it costs annually if that’s your preference. I’ll include what we think is a reasonable amount to bring to cover your startup costs and give you an all-in amount that will cover absolutely everything for your time here in the Kingdom.
    All of the amounts here are in US dollars. Please use a site like xe.com to get an accurate real-time conversion if you prefer to see the amount in another currency.

      EB visa $300
      But now it is not sufficient.
      You also need a work permit $300
      And many other documents $50 ++
      So the annual visa cost to stay in Cambodia as of 2023 is about $700

    • @ForRiel
      @ForRiel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dongshengdi773 I guess it depends whether your employer will pay for the work permit.

    • @dongshengdi773
      @dongshengdi773 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ForRiel Note that if you're not working , if you're retired living in Cambodia, an EB visa is not sufficient. You won't be allowed to stay in Cambodia with just an EB visa, you will be forced to also get a work permit. An agent will handle the paper works for a fee .
      Total cost would roughly be about $700

    Thank you for another great video Claire.
    I have been in Cambodia and frankly cannot see my wife driving a car, or riding a motorbike in that traffic madness ...way too stressful or dangerous! I am sure that there must be others in our situation. Love to read on how they get around to shop and sightsee?
    When in Siem Reap I used the Tuk Tuks which I found incredibly efficient, value for money, and great to see the world go by without a worry ...used the motorbike-taxi service once and needed a few Valiums to recover from the experience!

      It's very easy to get around using a ride share app such as Grab or PassApp. You can choose whether you want a big, traditional tuk tuk or a smaller 3-wheel one. Very cheap at around $1 for the average journey in town.

    5:30 ... Sorry to interrupt BUT ... don't worry about ceilings having much, if any, effect on your AC bill. If you're a baby boomer then you'll likely remember when supermarket freezers had no top on them. You reached into them and grabbed your ice cream with no door or lid to open. that's cause cold air falls and hot air rises. If your refrigerator at home had no top of any kind, you'd be shocked at how little effect this would be on your bill.

We have been living in Bali for the past 2 years & I've met quite a few people recently who have had amazing things to say about Cambodia. This was a super helpful place to start my research. I'm sure I'll probably go through all of the rest of your videos now...lol! 😁

      Are you feeling like it's time to move on from Bali? Cambodia is great and we love it here, but it isn't for everyone. I'd suggest coming for a visit if you can first. 🍍🙏😁

      I've lived in Bali for 6.5 yrs all together but it's become so busy, overbuilt & overpriced. The vibe has changed so much & it's really hard to meet people and build community. Cambodia is looking like it's much more our speed. Also, the visa situation in Bali is constantly changing and it's a really expensive visa if you want to stay longer. What is the long term expat community like there?

  • @markclement3848
    @markclement3848 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks for this helpful breakdown of costs. I have been investigating the cost of health insurance and found that it is very expensive for people over 60. The cheapest I have found so far is just over $200 per month with a deductible amount of $500 per year. This is for hospital and medevac only. The company you mentioned does not insure people over 60.

    • @ForRiel
      @ForRiel  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah unfortunately it gets very expensive for anyone over 60. You just have way up the risk factor, and maybe have a self insurance fund.
      Plus maybe factor in 6 monthly major check ups in Malaysia or Thailand. Healthcare is improving so hopefully the coverage cost will go down.

    Well done on your video.
    Obviously you are a couple of youngish age 🙂
    Perhaps a perspective from an old guy?
    76+ years old, healthy, living alone in a modern fully serviced western style one bedroom apartment 3 minute walk to pub street.
    So no moto, use passapp as when required, but otherwise I like to walk(good cardio exercise)
    Have lived in Siem Reap since 2019 as well as Phnom Penh Before that.
    For the last couple of years I have used an app on my phone to record EVERYTHING I spend.
    So I can tell you what I spent on Potatoes 3 months ago 🙂
    Rent was cheap after covid but is slowly on the rise as more people come back to live in SR.
    My $200 a month apartment is part of a newish (I was first tenant in Feb 2019) 12 unit block and as units become available prices are going up. I suspect my $200 a month will head to $300 if/when I vacate.
    Electricity costs is a piece of string question. As you know April is the hot month.
    Whereas my dry season electric is around $30-35 a month I suspect Aprils bill will be closer to $60.
    Insurance-Health Insurance is a biggy for us oldies.
    While Doctors visits and medication is cheap. Going to a modern hospital is eye wateringly expensive if you don't have medical insurance. Think $1400 USD a day for intensive care, and that's just the basics. ie no medications.
    Personally I find it cheaper to fly home to NZ every 12 months and take out travel insurance via my Automobile Association(AA) for 12 months. Much cheaper even including airfares than trying to get anything here or internationally.
    Especially once over 70 when most companies dont issue policies.
    Eating. As I get older my food intake has reduced, I only eat twice a day....I cook breakfast each day(Full English bacon eggs etc etc) my main meal. If I eat out by myself $2-$4 is plenty.(I eat Asian food). I am old school and enjoy a beer or 2 or 3 or ? every evening.
    Lots of calories and water there.
    I love going to local markets and only go to supermarkets for things I cant buy at local market...Currently that is Baked Beans!
    In Summary, My NZ Pension provides me with a very pleasant life style, including monthly? trips to Phnom Penh or the occasional trip to Thailand or Vietnam etc. If I wasn't a social gadabout (read in to that what you will) I could easily live a more miserable life, haha, for around $800 or less. $1500 a month gives me a full and entertaining lifestyle.

    Wonderful job (my dear) breaking it all down ! --- The extra 'rounding up' - throughout - really is a nice touch and gives enhanced perspective for a good life and actual likely costs. It allowed me to 'customize' (comfortably) further for my personal individualized anticipated budget. --- I'm allowing another $100 for heath insurance (at my age) &/or prescription drugs I'm on ? - Hopefully that will be enough ? - Not heard - anything - anywhere about drug costs for BP meds for example ? --- As a frugal old man (by myself) it looks like I'm very comfortably in a modest but 'comfortable' small studio - using the AC - as needed - and eating really well with my high BP under control - visiting other expats - for about $1100 - $1200 range per month - in Siem Reap ? - > If so - this will allow me to save a few hundred $ a month for any emergency's and maybe even travel some more. --- I was happy to hear about you living - "a great lifestyle" - and - I subscribed to see more of your videos !!!

      Thanks so much for your kind words! Most medications are available in Cambodia, in Phnom Penh if not in Siem Reap, and can be easily shipped to you. Pharmacie de la Gare is particularly good - you can message them on WhatsApp and they will tell you if your medications are available and what the cost might be. There are also several very good pharmacies in Siem Reap. They don't work with prescriptions here - if the pharmacy can get it, they will sell it to you without any questions in most cases. I think your budget will be absolutely fine. It's nice to have a comfortable lifestyle here, and that little bit extra really goes a long way. All the best!

How is the beach in Kep? The $40. a month place is good option for 1st month. A place to hang your hat for a month while scoping out the perfect place. No pressure. Get comfortable for 30 days while leisurely checking out the prospects. Love gas stoves in Cambodia. I hate electric because you have to wait for heat & regulating is a problem+ if the power goes out you can still cook. Saw several of your videos; good work. I'll be checking you out Clair. 👍🇰🇭💸

There are no buses or anything like that, but you can very easily get tuktuks for short distances. I've been watching all kinds of video about Siem Reap and I love what I'm seeing. My question would be an environmental one ; about whether there is an annual smoke season where the farmers are burning organic waste from rice farming. This is something I've seen as a problem in northern Thailand and that excludes my moving there for health reasons. I'm a bit smoke sensitive. Is Siem Reap subject to an annual smoke episode? Thanks!!

    • @ForRiel
      @ForRiel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Cambodia doesn't have the smoke season like Thailand does, but it can get slightly hazy around that time as the air moves around from places that are burning. A lot of people still burn their rubbish in Cambodia and these small, regular, local burns are more of an issue in my opinion. Rubbish collection is still a problem, and until everyone has their rubbish collected regularly, people will still burn - plastics, polystyrene, you name it - it all goes on the pile. Living on a higher floor in an apartment building is probably the best way to avoid this.

      @@ForRiel Thanx - that answered two questions. Since you know things , may I ask how is it riding your moto in traffic that looks like the running of the bulls? I'm amused at how they drive ; one part of me is deeply offended by that kind of driving yet another part of me has always struggled with OCD in my throttle foot. I can't be trusted with horsepower. I might fit in! What's it really like?

      It one of the hardest places to drive as many rules of the road don't seem to apply. In saying that if you take it slow and always expect the unexpected you will become a better driver. If you can drive/ride in Cambodia can do it anywhere 💪

I want to do good things for people as well and I'm thinking business visa..getting Cambodian produce to market at a fair price with Cambodian farmers well being at the heart of it. Holy moly. Between me and my wife our social security is $4,000 a month. Sounds like we can live like millionaires on $4,000 a month without even touching our retirement savings.

    • @ForRiel
      @ForRiel  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Once you get a retirement extension, you can't work here. So you need to be sure that you won't want to work in the future. Technically you can get the retirement extension here at any age, but below 55 you have to show adequate means to support yourself (once you it 55, this is not required). However, the actual amount that is considered adequate is not published anywhere, and is therefore up to the discretion of the person who processes your application.

      @ForRiel alrighty. Thankyou. That is a bit of good news then. I make right at 4k a month so I think im in the clear hopefully. Some countries are getting pretty high with their income requirements but im guessing cambodia shouldn't be more than 1500 maybe 2k in income.

    How do people manage filing taxes in Cambodia, since worldwide income is subject to local taxes? My online research shows that Cambodia taxes worldwide income of residents who live in Cambodia. Residents are who stay in Cambodia 182 days or longer in a year which includes foreigners.

    • @ForRiel
      @ForRiel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think this is a tricky one because there is always talk about taxation, but at present there is no mechanism to monitor income or to collect the tax. So it exists in policy but not in practice.

    • @pathkris2984
      @pathkris2984 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ForRiel Thanks for the information. Their laws seem to require a filing, hope it doesn't cause a negative effect down the road because of lack of filing by some expats. This is one of the biggest bottlenecks I see with Cambodia compared to say Thailand or Phil. A couple earning about 3000 dollars per month in social security in the US, would pay 0 tax in the US, because of the way tax is structured. But if you were to follow Cambodia tax laws, you will end up with I believe about 20% tax on the entire foreign income which is about 7200 dollars a year - a significant burden just to stay there. Since no tax was paid in the US, no credit can be claimed locally there for tax paid in the US.
