Jeremy loves horses, New York, basketball, the cello…and Susan, the new girl at school.
Before they teamed in the hit film Ode to Billy Joe, Robby Benson and Glynnis O’Connor gained fame in this honest and moving tale of first love in “Fun City”-era New York. Benson (One on One and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast) is Jeremy Jones, a shy teenager who excels in all areas of his life save for romance. After a brief encounter with dance student Susan Rollins (O’Connor, Baby Blue Marine and TV’s The Boy in the Plastic Bubble) at school, Jeremy is smitten and suddenly everything else in the world seems inconsequential in comparison. All he can think of is winning Susan’s heart. But, as he soon learns, new relationships can be as fleeting as they are exhilarating.
Jeremy would win “Best First Film” at Cannes for its writer-director Arthur Barron (Brothers). Barron and director of photography Paul Goldsmith’s (Neil Young’s Rust Never Sleeps) backgrounds in documentary filmmaking lend the film a gritty and realistic feel, befitting its urban locations. The film’s original songs, which are sung by the stars themselves, amplify the story’s tenderness and sensitivity. Shot with hand-held 16mm cameras, Jeremy has an uncommon authenticity and immediacy. Now restored for Blu-ray from its 35mm CRI, these qualities can once again be appreciated as they were when the film premiered in 1973.

Ahhhhh yes, teenage love. Where a serious and heartbreaking relationship lasts a total of 3 weeks and 4 days. Seriously tho, who doesn’t wish we could go back? (Cried my eyes out when this first came out. This and Sweet Hostage).

I worked at a drive-in theater at this time. And I could get in to any theater at any time free in my town ( a grand total.of 3)..I went every afternoon for 5 days to see Jeremy. It's now so bittersweet to see this and hear that beautiful song.
If you haven't seen it, do so....soft drink, popcorn. Curl up on the couch and enjoy..by yourself if crying embarrasses you.

GREAT reply and thanks for sharing all the nostalgia! Not sure how you got to see movies for free but lucky you! I never saw this movie but I remember when it came out at a tough time in my life when I was almost 20 and out of work and not knowing what I was going to do in life. NOT a time I want to go back to but 50 years later, I am almost 70 and retired after a 30-year career with the City of San Jose where I was born and raised. Lucky you to have worked at a drive-in theater since I LOVED drive-ins when I was younger and would have LOVED to have worked at one. Believe it or not, there is still ONE left today in San Jose but the others died off decades ago. So many FOND memories of them! Cheers to all this nostalgia from Albuquerque! 😎

@Doug Celeste really liked your reply. Thanx! I got into all the movies free because they were all owned by the same company...I know my family got in free as well at the drive in I worked at, AND, if they brought their own cups or bags, would be allowed to get soft drinks and popcorn free!!..(that was done because all inventory was done by containers, not product....except for burg ers, buns and candy bars)...even after I went to college I kept that job, plus worked at a hospital, AND a pizza place. That was when people were responsible for their own debt.
But, today, I have a projection room, and a massive film collection, including hours of drive-in.commercials ( " visit our snack bar...you still have 6 mins before our next film starts....remember to replace the speaker on the stand before you leave....do not reverse vehicle after exiting the gate..) I still prefer the B&W MOVIES , ANDi have the original CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON and IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE in its original polarized 3d (not red and cyan glasses but the same glasses we use today) and they are magnificent...they put today's 3D attempts to shame...
Anyway...."why does the world only look real on a black and white movie".
      🎞

@@rt3593 Yes, I have enjoyed so many of them on TH-cam. OMG, what cherished memories of my younger days at the drive-ins. One guy actually recreated a neat video of what it was like to go to a drive-in theater and it seemed so real. I think it was from a guy named Mike and it was a short video of the old Monte Vista Drive-In Theater in the Bay Area. Worth a look if you have not seen it.

@@rt3593 Thanks for your groovy comments that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. Glad you enjoyed my reflections, also. How neat that you and your family got into the theaters for free. Not many of us could say that. My friends and I snuck into drive-ins several times in various ways and only got caught once. I LOVED all the theater foods that you mentioned, esp. candy bars!! I always got a BIG laugh at drive-ins when suddenly, there were film problems and the movie briefly stopped. Then the cars would honk their horns and flick their headlights from low to high beams over and over until the film came back on, Sounds like you held down a lot of jobs at one time along with your theater job. Good for you! I would LOVE to see your projection room. Sounds quite remarkable. I LOVED all those intermission commercials at the drive-ins which were quite well done and entertaining at the same time. But we DO differ on black and white movies since I was NEVER a fan of them since the world is in color and that is the way I want to see my movies. Oh well, to each their own. I have purchased some roller coaster videos and DVDs in 3D with glasses but the special 3D effects were not that great, even with the glasses. The BEST 3D movie I ever saw was a short one at Disneyland in the 1980's called "Magic Journeys." (I wonder if it is on TH-cam.) OMG, the 3D effects with glasses were AWESOME! Everything looked so real! Cheers from New Mexico USA!

I wrote a review for this film for my high school newspaper..which I still have in my files. "Jeremy"is the best romantic teenage film drama that I've ever seen..It's too bad that Ms.O'Connor and Mr.Benson didn't win an Oscar for their performances in this movie.

Jeremy,a nerdy NYC cello-playing teen meets Susan,a teen ballet dancer that just moved to NYC with her father.
They fall in love and discover each other. At the end she and her father move back to Detroit and Jeremy's alone again. That's it. It was just meh for me.
