I used to be big on adding claps on top of a punchy snare with a specific harmonic, but honestly now, I can appreciate a minimal kick and snare as well. It's all in how you fill out the sound, and what you want to do with it. With the track I'm making now, my basses are fairly space and reverb heavy but also dark and techy, so adding reverb and tails to the snare do nothing but add white noise, which takes away from the bass. I see layering as a technique that should be used in moderation to achieve a specific sound, especially if you're using pre-mastered samples that already have a timbre designed into them.
