  • I played Ranger for two days. I feel horrible. Are traps balanced? 14+ seconds of root and a ton of true damage + damage over time + a snare. I dont know, reddit thinks its fine.

    great video, been wanting to make something similar myself but i've been too lazy. the ranger trap problem is kinda crazy because the only people defending ranger traps are low skill players that actually say that the people dying to the traps are the unskilled ones 🤣 the gaslighting is real

      @@DwyaneTech failure to notice a small trap on the floor (that can be easily hidden inside rubble/bushes/bodies/loot) shouldn't result in an instant kill. traps in this game literally function as an actual military grade landmine. if you step in one you are dead instantly.

      @@Repoze youre a rogue, run traps/locks (my biggest counter). But in all seriousness Ive killed people in very visible traps that are in the light because theyre too busy buffing and w key sending trying to get the jump on someone. The ruins grass and pebbles are op with traps but on other maps its really just take a torch out or lantern. Traps shouldnt be able to be placed inside of bodies/loot for sure tho

      @@DwyaneTech ranger traps should definitely have a big downside when you step into one. maybe a huge ms slow or big damage. but it shouldn't be a guaranteed instant kill, that's all i'm arguing

    Honestly the traps should just suck in a player instantly from anywhere in the map instead of them having to physically walk over them, and if the trap timer runs out the player should die because maybe I don't wanna have to even pay attention to the traps but still want the kill and like I'm playing ranger so why should I even have to do any effort to get kills, I pressed like a button or two already, please give me free kills.
    That's pretty much how it feels to play ranger with traps if you have a small idea of what the hotspots are in the map.

      This is unironically the best take I have ever read, one issue is that the traps should instakill, bc the exertion of clicking with a spear is probably too much cardio for a ranger player.

      Yeah or even better, make it so you can take the trap back after a kill so you dont have to bring 12 traps, only 1 or 2 stacks of traps should be enogh to clear a lobby😅

    I've been playing for around 100 hours, doing my thing, learning pve, dying to everyone in pvp. Booted up ranger, got 2 kills with squire traps first game, 3 kills the next game - only because i found a trap on the map. Continued to just abuse traps, pretty much died only when stepping on my own traps.

    Traps are overpowered + extremely frustrating to play against.
    They should either nerf the shit out of them, or rework them.
    And to compensate, they should buff other parts of the class(base stats, abilities, perks, etc)
    anyone who says traps are not strong or don't need a nerf, plays ranger 24/7

      I think it'd make more sense for traps to reduce movespeed by 15-30% for 3-5s depending on the rarity just to give rangers more ground, not to give them a win.

      @@aloneguy8527 How does ranger suck, name the flaws that ranger has, here are by the way the benefits ranger has:
      1. Incredible movement speed
      2. Incredible interaction speed
      3. High damage output from any range
      4. Skills and perks that can significantly hamper other classes such as knockback, strong movement speed loss on hit etc
      5. Immunity to invisibility thanks to tracker perk
      6. Reload speed as well as shooting speed is very fast
      7. A skill that can create a lot of distance if in melee range that isnt affected by movement loss effects
      So by all means, please, what are the things that makes ranger "suck"? What are these so called terrible sides of ranger that players dont even consider as "Balancing" due to how impactful they are? Enlighten me.

      @@sawritall4292 The only reason why ranger is "bad" is because the playerbase is bad. People are just not good enough to play the class and if they buff it then actual good players will stomp. Ranger can slow you at far ranges < add that to the list. You mentioned a skill to distance which is true. imo spear backstep is one of the most op things. Like I side the playerbase is too dogshit to to take advantage of rangers skill set and would be dominating if this game had the pop and "esports" community playing it.

    even if you look down half the time you dont see it. Its like the rogue landmine issue all over again. You either play the game cancerously like looking at the ground 24/7 for any traps or you die like the rogue landmine times when you had to wait by a door for a minute before knowing its safe and even then you sometimes got landmined

    They nerf landmine rogue to move the player base off the class because it’s “anti-fun” and overpowered. I agreed with both of those statements, and fully accepted that rogue balance needed to be fixed a year back.
    If balancing follows the same principle, that anti-fun mechanics need to be tuned down, the fact that this still exists in the game and is considered balanced blows my mind. It is essentially a landmine rogue but instead of having a fighting chance of surviving, you’re basically guaranteed dead if the ranger has more than 2 brain cells.

    They could change traps to be a un-refillable skill (like smoke pots), that way 1. it requires the ranger to give up a skill, 2. has a low count (2-3 maybe), 3. can't be refilled with campfires etc.
    Also the blue trap is just ridiculous, traps should be like 5-7 seconds at most on players.

      It should be a skill, idk why caltrops and smoke pots arent items but its probably for the best otherwise we would have rogues with a full inventory of smoke pots probably causing lag machines, hunting traps need to be changed asap, such a toxic item exclusive to a single class that basically gives them a free win

      As a ranger main, I agree that this is probably the best way of handling traps outside of straight up removing them.
      That way I don't have to feel like I'm missing out by ignoring them and duelling barbs with spear and backstep instead

    As a ranger main, I personally think traps are horrible for the health of the game. With that said, they are also currently the ONLY way to kill evenly geared fighters and barbs in certain maps. Between the instant direction shifts from A/D spam, shields, sprint and self heal for fighter, the fight isnt even close for ranger / fighter 1v1. I cant count how many times Ive hit a fighter like 5~6x before they are even near me and I still get 1~2 shot. The only solution within the context of the game, is to remove traps, but also nerf the classes that can just face tank a ton of damage. Or learn to live with the traps as a necessary evil to level the playing field against high PDR/High HP/shields/instant heals and invincibility abilities.
    Inb4 the gitgud comments, most maps dont have super long sight lines with no cover. So even if you manage to hit one of these guys a few times, in order to finish the fight you have to get close to them. because they can infinitely play around cover to full heal. As a ranger, you either have to hope they walk into your trap, or theres actually a good chance you don't win that fight at all, either because they leave, or you died closing the gap which gives them a chance to hit you once.
    Most of the time, it comes down to... you have to play the match up perfectly, hitting every shot and kiting perfectly or you just die within 1~2 hits.

      To be fair as a ranger you should be play8ng the boring meta of just building movespped and perma kiting the fighter. Also using longbow in solos is kinda of a throw I am assuming you're playing on gc in which case you should use survivor bow with push back they're never touch you. From one ranger to another

    traps are insanely overpowered for being just a simple utility slot item that also stacks upto 2 per slot for some reason, while rogue has caltrops that are infinitely worse as a limited use ABILITY SLOT item

    I play druid most of the time and still don't get pvp kills that often.
    I decided this season I'd try ranger again after over a year away from the class. My first game i got a kill and it only went up from there.
    Traps need a change, i believe making the damage one hit and the release a single button tap would massively help

    Honestly, I love being a silly shitter with traps but like lord the fact that it limits targets to a set radius is RIDICULOUS man.
    Like seriously if it was even just a case of kinda applying "Achilles strike" to a target for a few seconds I imagine that alone would make it so much less annoying and absurd.

      @@SoBadStrange also inaccurate, traps last for 8s usually without any debuff reduction, assuming everyone is using green and blue traps is disingenuous, why not assume they are using legendary 24s traps and the target has negative debuff duration?

    Quit the game ages ago because of the traps and bows. Tried the game recently again. I see that instead of Nerfing bows/crossbows, they gave bows to every class. What a shame.

    If they don’t remove them entirely (I’d be completely fine with them gone tbh) they could rework them to just be a damage tool. Could be a tiny bit of instant damage for you to follow up with ranged shots. I can definitely see them trying to add a move speed penalty after stepping in one, which could still be very annoying but at least you could attempt to move during it. 12 seconds is eternity in DaD, I can’t believe they’ve gone this long without a duration nerf, it’s absurd.

    I like what another person said where they need to be reworked into more of an information gathering rather than guaranteed kill. Make em louder/global so the Ranger can hear them triggering, make it slow by 20% instead of 40%, no root, and only last 3 seconds. Then of course only allow 4 to be carried and only Ranger can pick them up

    I main ranger and don’t even like them personally, I’d be fine for a overall buff to rangers and the removal of traps or rather than locking in place they get changed to a 50% ms nerf for 10 seconds plus the initial 15 true damage. Maybe buff that initial true damage and remove the damage you take when moving.

    If I wanted to play this game again, I was going to ditch my preference to magic/spellswords and just go full ranger. It's so good with just traps alone, the kits just add a slap in the face before you die.

    Idk I play a lot of both HR and below grey and I dont hit traps that often. I primarily play fighter. And I rather enjoy the concept. It requires prior setup, you have to successfully lead someone through the trap. Its audio queue is unique and loud as all hell when setting up.
    The only change i would personally make is that you should be able to disable a trap by hitting it prior to it trapping you.

    I think the problem with traps is that they're designed for a 3v3 format. Rangers with traps in 3s still don't necessarily contribute as much as a cleric, bard, or wizard, so it's not that unbalanced and can create interesting play scenarios based around group support and taking advantage of the locked down player. In solos and duos traps just do too much.

    Hunter trap - can use and place as many as your inventory allows you to carry, is a 3 second root in a game that essentially has no hard cc
    Rogue Caltrops - Can only have 3 for the entire dungeon, cant be replenished, a 2 second slow that also disappears from the ground after a set period of time

    I feel like limiting the number of traps a ranger is allowed to bring in is a good fix, and then also probably not doing dots...other than that you cant really take much away from the trap without it no longer being viable at all. Maybe it shouldn't lock you in one place, and you get a movement penalty based on the rarity instead of the current system of it being magically bolted to the ground

      I think this is a good take. Maybe even have trap be an option for one of the 2 active abilities. You get 1 trap and cannot place another until the first is triggered or removed.

    Yeah bro, in the game where druids teleport at you and oneshot, 5 fighters with 165 hp and 60% PDR, barbarians with 250 HP and warlocks with 330 MS killing whole lobby with 3 spells, ranger with 15 traps who sitting in single location whole game is defenetly biggest problem

    if you are fighting a ranger and step in their trap its on you. You should expect them to place traps as its the only unique thing they can use. if they are camping a trap there is only so much you can do

      That's the problem. If you're a Ranger who uses traps, you just hide in a dark corner. So you're not gonna know that you're fighting a Ranger.

    Been playing ranger since season 1 and I wouldn't mind a trap nerf/removal but Ranger would have to be significantly buffed in order to compensate. The problem with people who complain about traps is that they just complain about traps without discussing what would ranger get to compensate. Traps in themself are mostly used by newer/moderate skilled rangers. Top tier rangers either dont use traps or rarely use traps. The problem with their removal for even top tier rangers who don't use traps is that it takes the fear away of maybe there's a trap, which is an integral part of ranger kiting and spacing. I don't take traps in to most matches but i often bait/play as though I have a trap in an area just to make people afraid to walk forward. Without that fear, a ranger is just a naked fighter with no sprint.

    Obviously traps need a buff it's been ages since they got some love! Imo all quality tiers should receive +90% opacity as a baseline because they do sometimes get spotted out.
    I think we can all agree that's not fair for rangrs!

    0:47 uhm no, its not "ranger community", you're being gaslighted NO MATTER WHAT. Thats the nature of "balancing conversations" with dark and darker. EVERY single problem that you can remember this game had since release, ALWAYS, there was ALWAYS certain amount of people who: rationalized, justified, gaslighted you, tried to fight those changes, throw tantrums at you, called you stupid, skill issue, YOU problem, alpha game, we're testers etc. so you just wouldn't dare speak about this. Tired of this. Just wish more people called them immature kids and stopped conversations with people like that. Lost all hope about game balancing "conversations" in Dark and Darker, cause theres always people like this, just spilling bile at you just because they feel entitled to something that shouldn't be in this game for the sake of this game. But no, someone enjoying get cheese free kills with trap so it automatically means you are "choose tantrum" and continue galshighting.

    A few suggestions:
    Move traps onto an ability (like caltrops) so the ranger can only place 2
    Make traps shimmer/glow
    Reduce trap timer to a max of 4 seconds
    REMOVE SKILL CHECKS ON DISARM
    A combination of a few of these nerfs will allow traps to stay in the game without ruining it

    I agree that ranger traps are definitely a problem. They do far too much for their low cost and are often an easy way to secure kills. Personally, I wouldn't mind if traps were removed, but only if rangers are given something else to deal with the dreaded W key rushers like Barbarians and Fighters.
    The reality is, traps are a necessary evil. Yes, they might be lame, and yes, they can feel cheap, but they’re one of the few things standing between rangers and classes that can easily close the gap and dominate melee combat. You played to the ranger's strengths-setting traps in dark, tight spots on the Forgotten Castle map, easily covered traps, which only made them even more effective. But let’s see how traps perform in open, less favorable maps like Goblin Caves in High Roller mode.
    W key rushers, like Barbarians and Fighters, win melee exchanges 10 out of 10 times unless they’re already hurt. Barbarians have 150-200 HP and hit hard, while rangers have just 100 HP and no physical damage reduction. One Barbarian hit equals three from a ranger. Fighters, on the other hand, are an even bigger problem. With 50% physical damage reduction and Second Wind healing them for 40% of their health, it's nearly impossible to win an engagement unless they’re already significantly injured. They can easily catch you with their abilities as well.
    If traps were to be removed, we'd need viable alternatives to deal with these melee rushers. Here are a few ideas:
    Bell Trap: A simple trap that rings loudly when tripped, revealing the player's position without causing damage.
    Sticky Trap: Slows the enemy down for 5 seconds but doesn't root or harm them, giving rangers a chance to kite.
    Large Bear Trap: A bigger, easily visible trap that does more damage than the current trap but roots the player for a shorter time.
    Without something like traps, rangers would have to rely on max movement speed and abilities like Forceful or Quick Shot to stand a chance in melee, which isn't a more fun to do.

    As a Ranger main I can confirm that traps are frickin' stupid and should just be removed. There is 0 skill involved. The only time I use traps anymore, is during a chase, using the Trap Mastery perk, I shut a door behind me mid-chase and put the trap down in the exact time it takes them to open the door, masking the trap sound with the door sound. But even that is still stupid. Remove traps.

    With having a large voice in the community I would implore you to recommend something to give rangers if their traps are taken. They need class identity still. I think traps are cringe but they're the only thing ranger really has as fighter and bard are just better rangers discounting traps.
    Also it would be really cool to see you explore other things that are overpowered and unhealthy for the game alongside the traps like bards and barbarians and rondel fighters.

    3k hour player here. Haven't died more than a handful of times to ranger traps ever, definitely not even one time in the last two seasons. They aren't an issue. If they need to be removed, then so does fighter corner camping with sprint, barb with achilles/rage. Until you make counter play to that, traps are fine.

    I can't get behind anyone who defends it. It's insane how much of a free kill the trap gives. It's not even that hard to hide, whether it's the vegetation of the map, the mobs corpses or the same darkness that makes this game what it is.
    As for some random comment that I read on the video asking for bow buff... my guy, give some love to the crossbows.

    I've been saying that Ranger traps are not good for the game for a long time.
    Ranger sucks. It's not a good class, and a LOT of what little power it has is wrapped up in Hunting Traps. If traps have to go so that Ranger gets guttered then maybe it will finally get a buff to the FUN parts of its kit I'm more than onboard.

    Traps should only trap you for max 3 seconds. Also sometimes rangers hide traps inside the textures of the games like door frames so even if you're looking down you just won't see them.

    I have 2400h on record and more from the old days of the playtests. I only mained ranger last 2 wipes, and here is what I think about it. Ranger atm is a bit underpowered in solos and playing it very effectively means hitting most of your shots. I played aggressive full dps recurve + spear, but against high PDR my only chance would be to catch them in a trap. Placing a trap and baiting someone to chase you in a way that they fall in a trap is a skill that requires a lot of practice: where do you place and how do you bait them to follow you on a given path to fall for it?
    In the clip with Toddfather, it was pretty obvious to me that he wasn't aware of potential traps. The main combat tech for rangers is kitting, so a good ranger will always know the shortest path to a door/corner. If he deviates ever so slightly from it, it's almost certain there is a trap. Good players notice this and follow the steps of the ranger exactly or jump any "suspicious" shadow on the ground (in the clip, Toddfather jumps right on top of a "suspicious" shadow). Also, good fighter can just dps the ranger with bow/crossbow, since they can soak up the ranger damage. Whenever you chase a ranger, you are asking for it.
    This being said, rangers that fill escapes with traps are weird. Only happened to me a few times. I think blue traps are way too strong, it's definitely too much time. You should at least have a chance.
    I remember the old days when HR was new to the game, SoBad was maining his "trap rat" ranger build. Is it such a big problem nowadays? I only play up to 2h a day and I don't even remember last time I fell in a trap.

    Traps should have a health pool and break from damage. That way they can stay in the game but if youre wanting to avoid them you can throw mollies or fireball an area to clear it. First and foremost though, have them be visible over the map geometry because that is really ridiculous

      in this sense you can spawn hydra on them and it deactivates them. even treants but you don't have unlimited charges. I agree tho that you should be able to break the traps with melee attacks or magic spells or ranged damage. even tossing mollies on them should have a collision effect. this would definitely help with traps but in the case that rangers can have 14 traps in 1 area then its still kinda doomed lol

    I find funny that when a PvE steps on a trap they will free themselves a lot faster than a player and barely get any damage
    This scenario should at least be inverted so when a player steps on a trap they can instantly disarm the trap but when a PvE steps they should be trap indefinitely so you can use the PvE as a barrier that hits the closest player
