The fact that she’s answering realistically and this is not some contrived social media nonsense is both hilarious and refreshing at the same time. Fun video mate!
Holy shit you guys literally had me LOLing😂😂 Pete trying to justify the awesomeness of his gift items to his wife was classic! 😂😂 Thanks for making me laugh today!
Generators would definitely be a niche gift. You need appropriate storage space for an adequate amount of fuel, access to non-ethanol fuel, a plan to rotate your fuel supply so it doesn't go stale, run the generator under load at least monthly, and have the physical ability to move the generator and fuel cans and start the generator. Granny's gonna love it!
Always love seeing Tree join you in your videos! Two stories for you Pete: One of the best gifts I have been given was a 1 oz ingot of tungsten. Totally useless, would never have bought it myself, but it's cool to just have and hold and look at. Second story: many years ago, my dad noticed that his dad's garden hose was absolutely wrecked - clearly used well beyond it's use by date. It was held together with bits of duct tape, and leaked all over the place. Dad went and bought one of those really nice kink free expensive hoses from bunnings. He basically ruined grandpas birthday - he hated it. The hose sat unopened in the corner for ages, while the crappy old broken hose continued to be used. I guess the moral of the story is that just because a gift is functional, and probably necessary, doesn't necessarily make it a good gift!
25:35 the perfect luxury gift box would be Lush bath bombs, Lush shower steamers, L’Occitane shower oil, and a bunch of reloading components like primers and powder
Master and Commander + anything is a 10/10 and don’t let anybody tell you otherwise. I made my wife watch it and she eventually forgave me. You totally won the video.
she gets it. these are excellent pragmatic and practical gifts for a dad. normally i feel like the best gifts are either an upgrade of something that you have and use or a little luxury item that makes things nice but isn’t necessary hahahaha get her some bath bombs she deserves them
That's an elaborate way of telling your wife what you want for Christmas. I expect the WAF (wife acceptance factor) to drop as the price for the gift goes up.😅
I actually asked for a small 1 gallon shopvac this year from my parents. I remember how useful one was growing up as a kid and with a new baby in the house I am sure we will have messes we don't want to use our better vaccums or lug the big shop vac in from the garage, This seems like a happy medium.
The trick is to give gifts they wouldn’t normally buy for themselves but is still utilitarian and long time useful I focus on a single item and EVERYONE gets one. Last year it was cool Mexican ponchos…awesome to wear like a bathrobe. This year everyone is getting knives…BPS chef, kids get dbk version, skramas and puukos too. A few years ago I got everyone different cool clocks and another year it was nice scarves. Everyone raves about my gifts except my mom…she gives hers away right in front of me every year. She’s getting a donation to Ukraines children fund this Christmas but everyone else is getting cool knives
Today we learned that if you need gift advice for the men in your life, Pete has the list. It would be interesting to reverse this scenario, and have Pete critique Tree's top ten gifts.
Just watched this with the missus and was hilarious and entertaining. Would love more of these 😂 you two are great. Both have great takes on everything. Love it, thanks for a laugh guys
My wife would love a pressure washer. She's literally been asking to borrow someone else's or to buy one for a few years now. So she'd probably rate it a 9-10
Good list, definitely housewarming gifts though! I have a big family so at Christmas I try and get everyone a cheap indulgance, like a good pair of socks, a book, a box of chocolates, simple stuff like that which you're always glad to get another of. For birthdays for my pals I always try and think of something personal to them, if I think of something for them through the year I'll take a note on my phone and save it for their birthday.
I select gifts in the same way Pete does, my wife liked Pete’s list. People definitely do love a practical gift if it meets their needs. Greatest hits, Gifts that people used: IR laser thermometer: $20, gave it to a fried as a gift, she ended up using it all the time to check the radiant heating in her house. My dad uses his to check how his pans are pre-heated before frying. Air Frier: $50 USD, gave it to my dad he was skeptical but it’s utility to cook through meat from the freezer well, create perfect fries, and the fact it’s small and had almost no preheat, and it uses less energy than a normal oven time won him over. He and his wife fight over it now. It can do about 80-90% of what you use an oven for. Japanese Computerized Rice Cooker: $70-90USD Makes perfect rice every time, has a steamer basket to prepare your veg as well, it is well loved by anyone who keeps fucking up rice made in a pot. Which will be most parents. Gifts with mixed reviews: Decent quality kitchen knives: $20-40USD. Was really more of a gift to myself by way of not wanting to sharpen gummy shitty steel every time I come over. Half people use them, half do not. Babbish’s clef knife is very nice good for $20ish, and Vosteed’s Morgan chef knife is really fancy for around $30-40 on sale. Both sharpen up very well. Work Sharp guided sharpening system $40-80 USD: everyone I have recommended it to loves it, everyone I have given one to doesn’t use it, best with new knife in decent steel that isn’t clapped out. Most people are afraid to sharpen their knives, most kitchen knives are so blunt that it takes a very long time to bring them back to sharp with anything resembling a decent edge. If you give this type of gift, I recommend that you teach someone to use it to build their confidence with it. Decent quality work knives: Spyderco Byrd knives are well received, as are Mora work knives (robust, companion, ect) I’ve given away a lot of civivi knives, and a hogue deka. Just depends if someone will carry a knife or not. It’s more of a gift to yourself if someone is always asking you to sharpen their knife.
I think a dash cam would fit into this list well. Christmas gifts can definitely be useful, brother asked for a bassine bristle outdoor broom for example, but an element of "nice thing I wouldn't buy for myself" is good, that just differs from person to person. I'm just concious of space when gift giving, not everyone has a lot of space, and that can be more valuable than percieved usfeulness. Power bank is small but useful, an electric frypan takes up a lot of space in a small kitchen and might only be used once of twice.
I bought a Blunt umbrella after (I think) you mentioned it in a video forever ago - best umbrella I've ever owned. Still going strong and I haven't used another one since the day I got it. I gifted one to my wife and she gave me the 'electric skillet gift' look - until she used it. 10/10, would gift again.
An Electric skillet is excellent for someone that is young, poor, or moves around a lot. That, combined with a slow cooker got me through all my cooking needs when I was a ski bum in the Rockies for 3 years. It was given to me by my Dad and I still have it about a decade later
Mate, you had me chuckling before you even got started with your list. And for the record I agree with your picks 100%… well maybe not the umbrella but I see your point. A generator? Of course!!! Totally need me one of those. Anyway keep up the great content, I love knives but it doesn’t always have to be about them and I’m glad your channel has matured enough that you see that. All the best.
23:50 I'll give the generator a ten out of ten. Even if the person gifted the genset only uses it once a year for a day or so, it will be appreciated. There's nothing worse than a full fridge that has no power for 48 hours.
I feel like having to give a narrative about how your gift is _actually_ good is in the same vein as explaining why your joke is _actually_ hilarious. All that aside, I would be really stoked to get a generator, and all the other stuff on the list. A good addition that fits the theme of the list would be a jump starter pack for a car. Sounds like it might be a rough Christmas this year🤣
A few years ago I gifted Prometheus Lights MXS Standby emergency flashlights to a bunch of family members. I was super excited about it. Got a bunch of 3/10 reactions and I’ve never heard of anyone mention it since. I feel you, Pete.
I like to imagine the whole premise of this video was just a cunning way of finding out which of these ten gifts to buy for her. …Generator it is! In seriousness I really enjoyed this one 👍🏻
As an “old guy” that has just gone out a purchased most aII the gifts you listed as needed. The gifts that have endured over time are things I would not typically purchased for myself and have developed a memory and/or sentiment. They have become treasured so to speak. IE...if I needed a good knife, I would go get an SRK to beat on. While say a TRC would be like Wow on X-mas morning...
She is right about the contents of generic first aid kits. The consumables are generally shite. If you want to buy a first aid kit, you should look into medical kits from companies (North American Rescue) that are tailored for paramedics, first responders, hunters, military, etc. Those will have quality items, and will include actual trauma gear like tourniquet, chest seal, trauma bandage, compressed gauze, etc., that generic first aid kits from big-box stores rarely include. You can find a lot of quality compact kits for under $100 USD. Then, you can add stuff that you would use more often for minor injury and illness like waterproof bandages, topical ointment, and medications. I think this type of kit for a vehicle would make a good gift.
I'd love the shop vac, powerbank, and gas generator. 😂 I've been trying to shop for my young nephews and niece for Xmas gifts. Thought about the SAK Classic SD but it would probably be taken away at school. Decided on an Opinel No 8 w/ fork & spoon attachment set for the older nephew for backpacking. Gerber Dimes for the younger ones. But yeah.. I usually end up gifting stuff I'm currently into. Sometimes I get side eyes but they loved the Kalimba last year 😂
I really don't mind Pete's list, a lot of it I have already being a semi-feral rural person, the skillet I've only really found a use for extremely rarely. They're sort of like electric BBQ's in a lot of ways except don't have the fun and charm of something being on fire. They are great for bachelor gronks who basically can't cook and will have broken their stovetop or something. First aid kits aren't bad but every one I have is difficult to open with one hand while leaking out a lot of blood so if the very smart people out there ever figure out a good one or you know of one that opens easily in a hurry- good gift!
A generator is very thoughtful, but it's such a personalized choice. It's like gifting tennis shoes. Thanks but that's probably not the one that best fits my needs.
I love getting gifts like this, especially when they come with a long winded monologue. ...and Im not even kidding. If someone thinks this hard about a thing that I could use and how it fits in my life and would help me...thats so nice. I like utilitarian stuff though.
Gifts have to be luxurious items that you wouldn't buy yourself because it's too extravagant. All other gifts are dogshit. The good umbrella was a great gift idea. Hard to find one these days though. Also, my wife LOVES Master and Commander. She's read all the books. I've never seen it or read any.
I think it was the family doctor that gifted my parents a big black cast iron pot for their wedding and my mother thought it was ugly as hell and just put it in the back of some cupboard for like 20 years and then one day for whatever reason she decided to use it and now it’s in the regular rotation and she could not live without it
Can I recommend the RFDS yellow first aid swags? I have the small one and the big one. The small one would be an awesome gift for hikers, campers and gardeners.
Between X-mas and New Years of 2014, my home and shop was robbed. I spent some $42k US replacing about 80% of it, including my knife collection. What they didn’t take was everything on your gift list. What hurt most was the meaningful gifts I had received and/or irreplaceable passed down items like my grandfather’s old hunting knife...Just Say’n.
Some of these are slow starters. Till you need them and then "praise be to Pete this is awesome!". And the corollary is that you should thank people when you use an on going gift.
This is great and thanks to both of you. After watching the first few minutes with the skillet I decided to write my comments in real time for each gift as a stream of conscientiousness. Electric skillet: I'm with Tree on the skillet. It's probably a great kitchen tool. After you explained it, I would rate it a 2. I 100% want to have Pete's back and I get that it's practical to have. But as a gift, just... no. I love how she's trying so hard to not be overly critical. Hang on - she liked the slow cooker as a gift but not the skillet? Now I'm confused. I would not like it. Stuff that we need we buy when we need them. Shop vac: for somebody who needed one or asked for one it's great. I would expect my wife to divorce me if I gave her a shop vac as a gift. Good umbrella: I can appreciate the thought behind this and doing the research to get a good one. Ok as a gift, but pretty weak. If somebody in your family needs an umbrella, just get it for them, imo. Blanket: a good blanket for the car is a great gift. It sounds like you maybe want a tarp or a drop cloth in the back of your car rather than a blanket? First aid kit: Not as a gift for my wife. If you need it, get it. As a gift for somebody who can use it, it could be good. Power bank: Again, a good gift. Not for your spouse. Pete is defending it by saying it's $80. It's not about the cost. Water filter: So Pete... you know I'm a big fan. But the theme here is not good. You're trying to pass off stuff that the house needs as gifts to your wife. You're essentially double-dipping on your purchases. You need to step it up. Pressure sprayer: For the wife, 100% no. For somebody who needs or wants one, 100% yes. @19:46: I don't think you're winning. Guided knife sharpener: I'm surprised Tree put this at a 7. My wife doesn't want one, but she does want me to keep our knives sharp. As a gift to somebody else, good. Not for the wife. Generator: 100% yes for having one. My wife is thrill that we have power when the electricity goes out. No way as a gift for her. I would also not give one to somebody else. They need to know how to use it and it requires some maintenance. If somebody asked for one, then it's a good gift. Otherwise it's just a burden. Having the generator is a 10/10. It's not a gift to your wife.
For me, everything is 10/10 except for the electric Skillet (7/10) and the umbrella, but I have also never had a really nice umbrella. (7/10). I would love to add a fire extinguisher to the list, though! Thanks for the brilliant video.
A good gift is a want, not a need. I buy my own practical items so they are exactly right for my scenario. I agree with your wife... gifts should be the thing the recepient would enjoy but don't treat themselves to. Not to be confused with Homer's bowling ball!
The problem with these very practical gifts is that there's a built-in assumption that the recipient hasn't thought of solving this problem before you have. -OR, that your solution is superior because they haven't thought about it well enough (which is probably true). In my mind much of the value of my gift is all the research I did for something I would have bought myself. Often that abstraction is not appreciated!
For the record, I would be absolutely thrilled to get a gasoline powered generator for Christmas. I think part of the reason Pete and his wife are so far apart in their ratings of the gifts is the context of the holiday itself. Pete has a point that the gift doesn't have to be steeped in the blood of santa clause to be good, but for some people the magic of the holiday does need to be prominent somehow. I don't need that. Also loved the master and commander on Blue Ray bit. I love that film and nobody else in my family does but me.
I bought my daughter a joke present of a tool kit, for her 16th birthday, she had tears welling up in her eyes, until I gave her the actual gift a gold bangle. Now she’s 35 the tools are still being used, I haven’t seen the bangle in years.
The fact that she’s answering realistically and this is not some contrived social media nonsense is both hilarious and refreshing at the same time. Fun video mate!
Simply the best knife channel on TH-cam.
The best human channel even
It’s like…it’s like…listening to your dad explain why his gift is lumber from Home Depot.
“…think of all things you can build with that.”
Half of Pete's items are just prepping for natural disaster or apocalypse... definitely dad thinking.-a dad
I love that Pete's reaction to the first score is some variation of, "......I don't think you heard me right. Let me repeat that." 😂
Pete is the most normal person reviewing knives which makes him so good
Hilarious, your wife is right on everything. Quit gift giving, just spend the year adoring her.
#10 skillet 3/10
'that's like giving your wife a vacuum'
#9 shop vac...
As a hardcore introvert, y’all are the intelligent, charming, perfect dinner guests for me. Wonderfully engaging…and 9,000 miles away 😅
Pete is 💯 flippin that main breaker tomorrow to prove that genny is a ten 😂
Wife gift rule #1: Any gift with a cord will get you that electric skillet face.
Magic Wand?
Your wife is faulty!!! I gave mine vibrator and she was super happy!!!
@@CNYKnifeNut Ah, see what you did there
Holy shit you guys literally had me LOLing😂😂 Pete trying to justify the awesomeness of his gift items to his wife was classic! 😂😂 Thanks for making me laugh today!
Gifts youll hate at 25 but appreciate at 45.
Y’all crack me up. These are the conversations I’m having. Really resonating with my thoughts
Always love seeing Tree join you in your videos!
Two stories for you Pete:
One of the best gifts I have been given was a 1 oz ingot of tungsten.
That was fun. Good to see you and the wife give each other shit. Oh, as a fellow Aussie, I love the swearing.
Like Christmas, this was a train wreck. Thanks, Pete! Loved it.
Master and Commander + anything is a 10/10 and don’t let anybody tell you otherwise. I made my wife watch it and she eventually forgave me. You totally won the video.
Pete I think you are too practical for the holidays.
😅
I only gift toilet paper and bottles of water, I never miss.
@@jamesrrr37657 you should save that because I’m sending Pete a bidet. 😂
No way! Being practical is great! Pete is A1
she gets it. these are excellent pragmatic and practical gifts for a dad. normally i feel like the best gifts are either an upgrade of something that you have and use or a little luxury item that makes things nice but isn’t necessary hahahaha get her some bath bombs she deserves them
That's an elaborate way of telling your wife what you want for Christmas. I expect the WAF (wife acceptance factor) to drop as the price for the gift goes up.😅
26:04 "I feel like im living in upsidedown land"
Well you are in Australia Pete
I'm with wife. Give me consumable luxury goods. Wine, ale, mead, candy… and if it's home-made, all the better.
I actually asked for a small 1 gallon shopvac this year from my parents. I remember how useful one was growing up as a kid and with a new baby in the house I am sure we will have messes we don't want to use our better vaccums or lug the big shop vac in from the garage, This seems like a happy medium.
You guys both look great! Congratulations on all your weight loss and your health journey. Great video
Thanks! It’s been long and constant work but 10/10 worth the effort! 😊
You are blessed Pete, glad you have such a wonderful wife and family. Hope you have a great holiday season
14:50 My daughter bought me a big portable charging station like that for my birthday last year. It's way cool.
All the men were fighting for the jumper cables at the family gift exchange
The trick is to give gifts they wouldn’t normally buy for themselves but is still utilitarian and long time useful
I focus on a single item and EVERYONE gets one. Last year it was cool Mexican ponchos…awesome to wear like a bathrobe. Master and Commander should have been #1 on the list. Hands down.

Just watched this with the missus and was hilarious and entertaining. Would love more of these 😂 you two are great. Both have great takes on everything. Love it, thanks for a laugh guys
Oh Pete, you are so right! Best list ever and your missus is a crack up!
We need a follow up video on day after Christmas! Love you guys!
I like how you have your wife on. Very funny seeing her reactions to our strange hobby.
My wife would love a pressure washer. She's literally been asking to borrow someone else's or to buy one for a few years now. So she'd probably rate it a 9-10
All gifts gratefully accepted... including "ahh..."
Good list, definitely housewarming gifts though! I have a big family so at Christmas I try and get everyone a cheap indulgance, like a good pair of socks, a book, a box of chocolates, simple stuff like that which you're always glad to get another of. My brain absolutely heard Pete drop the bomb that we can buy devices to generate petrol at our homes!
I need my coffee.
Number one Christmas present, a Red Ryder bb gun with a compass in the stock.
Umbrella that is strong enough to double as a cane , also on my list. Personally 10/10.
Leveled up to Uncle Randy heights of Christmas giving!
It warms the cockles of our brass and ebony souls.
I select gifts in the same way Pete does, my wife liked Pete’s list. People definitely do love a practical gift if it meets their needs.

Generator is my most useful item , a must have with all the power outages
Custom firstaidkit that reflects the receivers needs, and also some kind of cours that teaches them how to use the stuff
An Electric skillet is excellent for someone that is young, poor, or moves around a lot. That, combined with a slow cooker got me through all my cooking needs when I was a ski bum in the Rockies for 3 years. It was given to me by my Dad and I still have it about a decade later

Gosh. The number 1 pick sure... generates a lot of controversy! 🥁
Pete geeking out. He's making a doomsday list for Xmas.
Pete is a thinkin man...I like your ideas mate! Well, maybe not the umbrella for me, I'm bald and my hair won't go curly in the rain! 😂
As usual, fun video and the critique from your lovely wife was even more fun. Thanks 🎸🔪

Getting shredded there Pete!!! 💪
Im in the uk,i have the shop vac, love it and wanted one for ages so if i hadn't bought it myself, ild definitely appreciate it being bought for me
Electric skillet 3 as well. If you need more cooking space use your bbq! Well I have a bbq with a side burner.

Great video! ❤
The List was 10 out of 10 Cedric
Me: “Taking notes.”
Me again: Throwing notes away
I think it was the family doctor that gifted my parents a big black cast iron pot for their wedding and my mother thought it was ugly as hell and just put it in the back of some cupboard for like 20 years and then one day for whatever reason she decided to use it and now it’s in the regular rotation and she could not live without it
Can I recommend the RFDS yellow first aid swags? I have the small one and the big one. The small one would be an awesome gift for hikers, campers and gardeners.
Hey, guys, love these vids. For med kits, Refuge Medical is the best!
Master and Commander for the win! Top 10 movie for me.
Cedric is just way to practical. Love Actually hit this on the head. " I don't want something I need I want something I want."
First Aid Kit = 10.
I have one on the headrest in my truck that is attached with hook and loop. Grab and go!!!
Bidet = 11
And now we know what Pete wants for Christmas!
Solid list, but a good example of how women and men view gifts differently regarding sentiment and practicality.
Pete, I'm on your wavelength. If it's something that will be used frequently, it's a good gift.
Genius way to find out what to get her for Christmas
answer to all his suggestions "It's just so odd Pete" 🤣
Your wife is a gem.
Batteries are a good gift. People aren’t brand specific and everyone ends up needing them.
My dad LOVES 'master and commander' ⛵
I bought my daughter a joke present of a tool kit, for her 16th birthday, she had tears welling up in her eyes, until I gave her the actual gift a gold bangle. Now she’s 35 the tools are still being used, I haven’t seen the bangle in years.
You both are hilarious and awesome.
“It’s nice and big” that’s what she said.😂
