The sad part is that this is rehearsed. You can clearly hear it in the grandma’s acting. What, you think they were doing a challenge and grandma happened to observe and come up with the solution, leading to a “cute video”? Well I guess that could happen, but they didn’t convince me, I call staged.
The kid doesn't know the science, Mom doesn't know how to state the rules, and Grandma knows them all. What a great example of the education system downgrading over generations.
A simple statement like "The setup must remain as it is. Boxes set apart, paper on top, apple placed on the center of the paper." Would have helped to clear things up. That said, she did visually demonstrate how the setup should be before letting her son work. (I'll try and keep this next part brief) Part of the issue is that she's coming at it from the perspective of "Solve the problem on the problem's terms." While the son is coming at it from the perspective of "Work around the problem" It's a bridge building problem. We did tons of these in elementary school as small science tests. So, there are simple rules that have to be followed to make an effective bridge, and some basic logic behind the setup. You can't work around those, otherwise that defeats poth the spirit and the purpose of the task. On top of that, you learn nothing. As a result, the kid's answers are wrong. He's not outsmarting anyone. He's failing to learn from the task. His mother failed to explain the task in such a way so he could learn. The grandmother solved the task for him, robbing him of the opportunity to learn. This was a whole mess.

It’s silly because they didn’t spell out what was allowed and not allowed. Without that, the basic assumption was don’t change anything- no moving the boxes, no folding, etc. The kid’s approaches were fine but just violated their unwritten and arbitrary rules. And the final solution was just as arbitrary but they happened to allow. They could have said no folding and then were looking for an arbitrary allowance of wetting and freezing the paper (again, just as arbitrary).
Exactly why it's a problem. Sure, those are unwritten rules, but you NEED to know what the rules of a game are in order to even play it. The kid, by technicality, did everything she asked. He put the apple in the middle. Not his fault she couldn't explain basic rules

Based on the way she described the challenge, technically yes he was right. But in actuality we all knew what the challenge was asking for and his ideas were a cop out. You can pat him on the back for thinking outside the box but that doesn’t mean he followed the challenge appropriately.
