- Rocky Bleier was a National Champion running back for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, he would be drafted into the U.S. Army
following his rookie year with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Wounded in combat and told he may never walk normally again, he made his way back to
the NFL, starting for the Steelers through their famed 4-time Super Bowl-winning run of the 1970s.

The NFL comeback player of the year award needs to be renamed. "The Rocky Bleier comeback player of the year." A true american hero.

I'm not a fan of football, or the players that play the game. But this guy, has a spot in my heart. Vietnam Vets, came home, fought the fight and did what they needed to do. No hand outs, no public support. Just pulled themselves up by their jungle boots, and did what needed to be done.

As a young boy growing up in Pittsburgh I knew the “Rocky Bleier Story” I remember when it was announced that a movie was going to be made My family moved to California in 1978 To this day, fans to the Steelers (& Pirates!) For all our years in California, we remain Pittsburghers in our hearts It’s because of players like Rocky, and many others Shortly after coming to California, we met Howard Cosell Told him, Go Steelers ! He put his cigar back into his mouth waved his arm at us and walked away I still have the great Sports Illustrated poster of Rocky with the ball, plowing ahead with the menacing Raiders right behind him BTW Rocky has great penmanship That autograph ( even tho printed on the poster) is the autograph of a superstar and an American hero

What a charismatic man, with an incredible story, that couldn't be made up... I have no idea how I missed it, being a huge Steelers fan growing up watching Bleier, as well as, a history buff.....but, I didn't find out about his Vietnam service until just a few years ago. I felt strangely ashamed. What an incredible man/story.
