I feel like it is one of the great tragedies of music that these two split up. What they had was beautiful, magical and ephemeral. The likes of it are not to be seen again any time too soon. I can't even imagine the music they still had to create between them. I just love them and hope that one day they will be able to reconcile.
B Lenhardt I hate that they spit...and John Paul's new CD, "The long Good-bye"...sounds like he's singing to Joy, not his wife...and I have Joy's new CD ordered...released soon...but "What a Good Woman Does" ...I know she's singing about John Paul... My all time favorite Duet....
Thanks...I found that, "The Long Good Bye" was written long ago...but when I first heard it, I didn't know...and listened to every song over and over until Joy's, "Grace" came out...and I know there are many songs that are directed specifically to John Paul...and I'm sorry, but "The Long Goodbye" sounds like it's for Joy...I'm listening to "Grace" alot...Would be so happy :) if the would reunite...Best Duet EVER !!!!!
You probably dont care at all but does anybody know a trick to get back into an Instagram account? I was stupid lost my login password. I appreciate any assistance you can give me!
They are both lovers of music, of Art, they live for expressing their selves through their music and they are feeling each other 100% ....their songs have part of their soul as their performances....such chemistry and same point of view by both......so rare and unique...
I keep coming back to watch this set because it's pure magic. The incredible raw talent, the clear and intense chemistry/tension between them, the lyrics...it's sheer perfection. They're in sync not only in their harmonies but in their breaths and cadence. It's like you're watching someone paint a masterpiece right in front of you and sexy as hell. I wish I'd been there to see this live. I did see JPW live twice at World Café Live in Philadelphia; had front row seats and spoke to him before and after the show. He's a lovely person and WOW he's just phenomenal performer and I'd go see him again and again. Goes without saying, it's tragic they split. Despite what they say, it's easy to see why they did, it's all in the lyrics both as TCW and in their solo work.
Their chemistry is pure gold. 1:46 when she pushes him with her fingertips. And the look on his face when he goes back up to the microphone. "Oh dear, never saw you coming. Oh my, look what you have done." For real.
To be fair, when you harmonize with someone, you have to look for cues in their face and mouth to stay in sync. But I agree, they have a really strong bond that is often untenable when you're married to someone else. So sad.
I feel like I game to the party after everyone left. I just discovered this duo three days ago while looking at Olicity videos and someone had posted a video with Adelaide Kane and Steven Amell with the song Dust to Dust. I immediately went to iTunes and started downloading Barton Hollow and The Civil Wars albums. It was the next day I found out the Joy & John Paul had separated a couple of years ago - I was just crushed. Their sound is soooo good. I watched a couple of live performance videos and saw how good they worked together on stage. I also hope some day they realize their best music is done together. What a loss but at least we have some songs to remember them by.
Being in the room for this show was sheer SXSW magic. Every few years you catch yourself with your mouth open, realizing that you are watching something great unfold that will certainly have an impact on many people. This was that moment. Thanks so much for sharing. Very sad to hear today that they have decided that they simply can't go forward. I will remember this as one of the most intimate and celebrated pre-breakout performances that I've had the privilege to experience.
I'm sorry but you can't fake being into someone (or NOT being into them). And if you can, these two deserve Oscars for this performance. I agree with B Lenhardt -- easily one of the greatest tragedies in music. Most musicians nowadays write and perform complete and utter garbage. This, on the other hand... this is art. I'm truly heartbroken like so many people here.

1:45 Cheeky. In another life, Joy and John will get to live out their love story. They will have their dance til the very end. I wish them much happiness in this life too, even if not together.
Mainly John Paul's wife if I had to guess. Joy's husband was their manager and probably had everything locked down on the road. It did not seem Joy (or her husband) wanted the band to breakup. The breakup was entirely on John Paul's end of it, which makes me think his wife was driving it. Can't blame her.
@@DRM-nb1fg Exactly. As a musician myself, I hate that they broke up. But as a woman, I can definitely see his wife saying, "It's me or her." I know that's what I would have said! But part of me wishes they were a real couple!

Wouldn't you love to have been a fly on the wall just before they cancelled their European tour? At that time I think it was Paul who said there were "irreconcilable differences" regarding the tour. "I Wish You Were the One Who Got Away" from "The Civil Wars", which was pretty much in the can before they were going on the Euro tour, would support your notion. Their singing was full of angst on the whole album, and a fine one it was! I'm looking there for clues.

I'm so pissed I missed the chance to see these two play together. They have a magic connection for sure. And j think the fact that they aren't lovers is part of the magic. There is a quite respect there for sure
True tragedy that these two went on their own. This is the perfect example of the magic of two parts being greater than the some of any one part....True greatness together...Alone? not so much!
would of been nice to hear the civil wars play that song of Free Bird, lol as they said about it and he started playing a bit before the start of Jackson song of billie jean.
When I was younger, I thought these two had a bit of a romance going on, but now I see that, musically, they go so good together that anyone would be jealous. I used to sing in a choir, and me and the choir are jealous of them. They're musical bond is so strong, that I have no doubt they're husband and wife were worried. For sure they're playing into the whole romantic part of it, but they're amazing performers, the both of them.
Best Americana band that never was. So hard for me to understand what could have been SO BAD between them they couldn't figure it out and continue together as a band. Did someone show up in other's dressing room naked wanting sex? That's about the only thing that makes any sense as to the breakup, but even then, you'd think it could've been worked out.
not strange that you would say that as many people feel that way about them and that is one of the major "attractions" that people have/had with them is that no one know if there was anything behind all the eyes/stares that they had. there are a few hidden interviews and such that they have said "there is nothing between us" and they seem to be very honest and sincere people and i would just tend to lean towards that. I have also read that there was "tension" between them during the second album that ultimaetly lead to the break up. Oh by the way dont know if you knew or not but joys husband was there tour director so there is that too.
If that was it, they would have handled it like mature adults but instead they did their last concert without looking at each other, then canceled all of the rest of their sold-out shows and never spoke to each other again. That is not something two adults do over different musical preferences. Something else happened.
Can somebody that is an actual singer please clear up the debate between if when Joy is looking at JP a lot if it has to do with her visually keeping the harmony in order...or she just looking for those reasons. Understand? Thx if anybody can say if thats a real tactic or not. Later...
When you are singing a duet with someone and there is that much harmony, you look at each other to make sure that the timing is perfectly in sync. You want to breathe at the same time. When you sing with the same person a lot, you can tell by the way their chest and mouth move what they're about to do. I often look at duet partners that I don't much care for just for this reason. LOL. That being said, she's into him. Making this kind of music with someone is intimate, and I'd argue more intimate on the "soul" level than sex. Whether they acted on it or not is speculation, but these two are definitely joined together at the soul level. It is painful to know that they aren't making music anymore. It's like my parents got divorced all over again.
I feel like it is one of the great tragedies of music that these two split up. What they had was beautiful, magical and ephemeral. The likes of it are not to be seen again any time too soon. I can't even imagine the music they still had to create between them. I just love them and hope that one day they will be able to reconcile.

LOVE THESE TWO VOICES...THE MELDING!...perfect. (not TOO difficult to look at...(drool over) either.)👏🏼👍🏼🤘🏼
A girl, a guy & a guitar. It's perfection.
Absolute Perfection.
They used to sound even better live. Joy's voice is angelic and amazing.
would of been nice to hear the civil wars play that song of Free Bird, lol as they said about it and he started playing a bit before the start of Jackson song of billie jean.
so amazing ...why oh why are they no longer together? love them SO MUCH.
I love them
When I was younger, I thought these two had a bit of a romance going on, but now I see that, musically, they go so good together that anyone would be jealous. I used to sing in a choir, and me and the choir are jealous of them. They're musical bond is so strong, that I have no doubt they're husband and wife were worried. For sure they're playing into the whole romantic part of it, but they're amazing performers, the both of them.
Check out Foxes and fossils cover of Barton Hollow here on youtube...Father daughter singing together and they are worthy of the listen
The problem is you listen to one song, and another, and the next thing you know it you’re watching a concert.
Dang, this version of Poison ☠️ and Wine 🍷 is killin’ it
When i hear this song i feel happy
I feel chemistri its so 👍👍👍
One of a kind.
4:34 my favorite part
She's so sweet :)
She is. Her name suits her perfectly!
I love them! She has amazing vocals, but she sing a little too loud over him sometimes.
poison and wine favsss
Gaddamn they are good.
After seeing them together...on stage, if I was Joy's husband I would of let her go to him...is that strange to say???
not strange that you would say that as many people feel that way about them and that is one of the major "attractions" that people have/had with them is that no one know if there was anything behind all the eyes/stares that they had. there are a few hidden interviews and such that they have said "there is nothing between us" and they seem to be very honest and sincere people and i would just tend to lean towards that. I have also read that there was "tension" between them during the second album that ultimaetly lead to the break up. Oh by the way dont know if you knew or not but joys husband was there tour director so there is that too.
Get some popcorn 🍿
Best life ever
8:22 omg
miss them
..Joy wanted more pop genre ......
John wanted to stay true to folk blues country.
.thats it....💕❤
Chris Slok that doesn’t explain why they’re not on speaking terms... :(
If that was it, they would have handled it like mature adults but instead they did their last concert without looking at each other, then canceled all of the rest of their sold-out shows and never spoke to each other again. That is not something two adults do over different musical preferences. Something else happened.
Why did these two break up😥 Such harmony! So so sad they aren't together anymore😟
Sad to hear they decided to part ways.
Great interview with Joy over at the Death, Sex & Money podcast. www.wnyc.org/story/joy-williams-death-sex-money/
I'm sorry...i feel like they were intimate. That little bit starting at 11:28...ummmmm
I agree.
They were really somethin!!!
She is the cutest.
DAMN IT! why did they have to break up!
Soooo Niiiceee.
4:40 what a moment
Please get back together
so sad they broke up
Nice
Yes. Visual, body language, that’s where they get their perfect harmony timing. Spectacularly done
Jesus, they should be married. This is like Jim & Pam times 1 million.
EXACTLY!
