Regarding the Heretic Legions' motivations, I think it's worth considering that it's been almost eight hundred years since the Templars created the gate to Hell at the end of the First Crusade. In the first decades of demonic occupation, there was probably a lot of resistance, but to most of the people living on Heretic territory now, it's just... normal. These are people who've lived their whole lives in the Heretic information bubble, who just don't hear alternate points of view - but who are no doubt told a lot of horrific stories about how bad the Church is. Most of these stories are probably even true: the Church factions are not *nice*, by any stretch of the imagination.
I hope this is something they go more into once the actual book drops honestly. We can get little hints of things like that but thats peak actual story material right there. Also yeah true. I've seen the Trench Pilgrims. I'd believe my boss if they pointed at mister "hands nailed to a shield" and called him the bad guy lmao.
I figured it was the more simple answer... apathy. A person born in the city might be a bit hesitant killing a rabbit, slicing it up, and then putting the bloody meat on a stick to be cooked over a fire as they rub the smashed up inedible remains against the fur to make it into a nice pair of gloves. Someone who grew up as a hunter or where it is common to hunt wild animals just to survive would probably call the person from the city a wimp. Now let's take that image, fast forward 800 years... and then take a page out of warhammer 40k nostramo. (or just the Skaven in warhammer fantasy) You have LITERAL DEMONS in charge, you have people flaying other people alive, crimes are common place, and the example of the rabbit image above is now done to people... only this time you keep the victim alive through the entire process to get dark magic to ensure that everything works better. Maybe that new skin suit can protect you against bullets if you keep the victim screaming for an hour straight. Maybe you can ensure that the next group of punks across the street will think twice to mess with you since they now know what happens if they fail trying to steal from you or murder you. Then get that 'sane' induvial from that hell born, raised, and breed area of the map... and see how they might think the people from the 'holy' or 'sane' parts of the world would be a bit hesitant to what you grew up with for your entire life least you end up being the 'rabbit' in that story above. That is how twisted they might have become after being born, raised, and survived long enough to reach adulthood.
It's stated in the lore that to join the heretic legion you have to walk up to the gates of hell and survive, which only happens if hell recognizes you as sufficiently evil. I don't think this is a case of a different viewpoint, the heretic legion is just plain evil, they do what they do because it causes pain to others, not because they think the church is evil.
@jameshutton3960 I imagine the line in the sand is the people who live day to day in heretic lands vs people who are conscripted. Hell pilgrimage culls those who are good, so that number drops in the able bodied population. But for example Iron Sultanate takes children from heretic towns and cities they destroy and raises them as Jannissaries. If you're actually in the military though? Yeah pure evil. Hell said so lmao. At first I assumed it was that. Hell is overly evil as the intention. But nah, its a numbers game. TC has a *much* bigger population than our world. Which as I said at the beginning 1/3rd of humanity is on the side of Hell. Which for them specifically, they seem to be intentionally trying to outpace the others population wise. They have the means to do this too. Their tech is just better, they dont really care for the quality of living, and they specifically feed their people hellish foodstuff. Shit directly from Hell that grows stupid fast and is insanely dense food source... it also may or may not be sourced from bodies. So the gate pilgrimage sounds more like a numbers game. But a numbers game from a population that is indoctrinated already into worshipping Satan. So it sounds more like a way to quickly boot people from basic training with 0 effort and with more cruelty? I found that little detail while reading about the Iron Sultanate. The people doing this pilgrimage are probably worthy of Hell, but it looks more like its weeding out those that might not be able to commit rampant murder or something. Not meant as a full defense or anything either lol. You got me wondering if the devs ever commented at the population of the TC world and I found a lot more hiding in the lore. Alongside some reading I already did recently.

I’m just glad a piece of fiction is again willing to write the bad guys as bad guys. Rather than some sympathetic anti-villain. Give me more evil dudes
I hope they add some shades of grey to Hell. So that they're more just misunderstood rather than outright villains. So that we could better relate to them :-)
I don't know man, from what I gathered there isn't much difference. I think that regardless of the side you choose, you're likely to get puréed and poured into a pointy helmeted suit of armour.
I LOVE IT! Only one thing bothers me. Why do the Heretics look like German Soldiers? I mean Everyone knows that Germans in particular are very Religious people. And we live in the 21st Century, the enemy image of the Germans should be Reconsidered in my opinion!
To be fair, can you think of a more ironically evil group than the n#zis (censored cause youtube) The heretics remind me a lot of the Wolfenstien troopers.
Its the kinda thing where 2 main sides in a conflict, Creation vs Hell, is made up of a bunch of different groups with their own aims. All believing that they're actually the protags. Good example is say, the Iron Sultanate. And Islamic faction. God full on preformed a miracle and placed an Iron Wall to give them a defensive location to retreat to. So they're like "Ah sick. God's chosen." But a Christian faction, New Antioch saw that and was like "Ah sick. God put a big wall in the Middle East to distract the Satanists. Thanks God! Always looking out for us." Everyone just assumes they're gonna win in some way. That and war game lore means theres always a justification for each faction to fight each other/themselves.
Not really there's a third that its all lovecraftian cosmic horror but the creator stated that its gonna be a long way before we get models, rules and lore about them
The historical research on this game seems super lazy... Might be nit picking, but given that their whole shtick is alternative history, makes me question whether any effort went into this thing or if its just an attempt to build hype and grab cash. The templars were formed after the first crusade. They explicitly spell out that the "knights templar" open the portal to hell in 1099.
I wouldn't say 1 possible date flub means one of the least profitable project methods (indie tabletop) is now suddenly a cash grab. But honestly I can see some reason that its intentional. Like for one, the actual start date of the Knight Templar is a bit... nebulous? 1118 to 1120 is what you getwith a quick google search but I know there is a source (Simon St Bertin) who claimed it started in 1099. Was he right? Dubious. Would he be correct in an alt history setting? He would if the author decided he was lol. Then the other point I've seen brought up, this is intentional. We wont know until the full books are out, but they are really setting up that these factions can be unreliable narrators. So... kinda like in real life. Chance the Templars were scapegoats here accused of demon worshiping.
@@glueboy I mean its literally the first thing you read in their lore doc. Which is why I think its incredibly lazy and badly researched. They were established in/around 1119 as the Poor Knights of Jesus Christ in response to the roads not being safe enough for pilgrims - something that only became a concern after the Kingdom of Jerusalem was created after the crusades. Their connection to the Temple of Solomon/Temple Mount was an accident - King Baldwin gave it to them as a headquarters in 1120. They literally didn't exist during the first crusade and for the first century or so of their existence they stuck to their original duties of protecting pilgrims rather than becoming an elite military force.
Ok so it sounds like you're going with that main account and formation of the order. Which I believe started in 1119 and was officiated in 1120 after the Council of Nablus. Which is just one account. There is a lot more when you look at the life of the founder of Hughe de Paynes. It could have began in 1118 durring his pilgrimages to Jerusalem. Or that much earlier acount by Simon St Bertin? He was writing about Paynes. If we wanna get extra anal here some people argue it didn't actually start until it got church approved at the Council of Troyes in 1129. My point is that the origin is a lot more disordered here. History is an interesting mess of accounts. How many of these actually happened? Personally there are a lot of legitimate evidence placing its origin around 1118 with Paynes imo. But for an alt history setting they at least have the historical documents here to yoink the date listed in the lore primer. Shout out to Bertin for the multi century layup. (Had to edit cause I mixxed up names lol)
@@glueboy I mean the exact dates aren't clear - we only have the Canons of the Council of Nablus of 1120 as a direct contemporary primary source that establishes both the Templars and Hospitallers. But they had to have been formed well after 1099 because their whole shtick for about a century was protecting pilgrims. They wouldn't have formed before or during the crusades as pilgrimages had become impossible in the 9th and 10th centuries due to hardening attitudes by the rulers of the region. "Templars in 1099" shows there was no effort to even bother any research - it shows they haven't even bothered googling giving wikipedia a cursory glance when developing their setting.
"Shows there was no effort to even bother researching" you know, except for the document I've repeatedly referenced lmao. Which you don't have to believe. I'm not even saying I do. My *point* is that the existence of it is more than enough for an alt history setting. Like a counter argument to all of that is if the devs just said "Hey all Bertin's account is what happened in Trench Crusade." And then point in the direction of his writings. Then hey, right after that part it diverts so hard from our history that it doesn't matter lmao. That and technically the TC world isn't our world in the first place. The religions in that world is heavily based on ours but diverts a bit occasionally.
@glueboy same use of a demonic force, same use of a cataclystmic war, same use of overtly edgey tones to drive how how evil the legion is, same use of a legion to show the forces of evil/chaos corruption, same use of genetically altered humans on both sides, same use of gruesome weapons. Only differences are its contained to one planet and its not sci fi
@glueboy only difference is its on one planet and has zero xenos and abhumans Still has a heavy religious element. Uses the term legion for their satanic (chaos) corrupted army, has a chaos corrupted army, a faction of religious zealots, overly edgy/evil villians, genetic manipulation, power armor, weapons designed to be abhorrantly violent and wacky, a cataclysmic war/event that sends humanity into a dark age. Tell me again how its not a 40k rip-off lol
Just saw latest bit, but yt is really weird with comments based on how you sort it. I think certain words hide it? If you sort by new it should show up? Maybe? I can see all of it on my end and I personally dont delete comments unless people start spouting just actual hate speach, calls for violence, or slurs. Believe what you well cause its my word against whatever weird system yt has.
@glueboy amazing isn't it, bet you'd be falling all over yourself if someone accused you of being a bigot against Muslims to apologize but as soon as you're a bigot against "the right people" You're fibe with it, you're exactly the type of person who should be playing that game
@Frug4l I'm a big fan this version of me you just made up to get mad at. Even funnier cause I literally just finished making a video covering their muslim faction. My actual take is this. I don't think the devs are being disrespectful because I've seen no proof of them being disrespectful. Just grow thicker skin tbh.
Nah devs just didn't want the full blown chuds that were busy crying about female space marines and Games Workshop "going woke" in their community. People are still very excited for Trench Crusade, probably more so now that the neckbeards have been directly told to fuck off
@CalamityJay-ez2mq Genuinely thats my opinion based off my experience with making Trench Crusade videos. I saw the drama occur on Twitter but didn't have a full opinion since I wasnt present. Then after making videos? People fully into Trench Crusade commented. Which I found 2 groups of people who were already associated with the community. 1 side had a bunch of genuinely nice people excited to see somebody talk about their game and add details I didnt have time or access to. The other was only talking about the discord drama while also being immensely shitty. Full on random homophobia out of nowhere shit was wild. This isnt just a couple people sadly. So yeah, if I had a discord for this channel I'd make that same decision lmao. Fuck em. Aint no way in hell I wanna share an online space with that crowd.
So besides the fact "enemies" in a wargame is really just any faction that isnt yours. You just want a historical wargame? Those exist already lol. Deus Vult and theres a crusades supplement for the game SAGA.
This video is being posted on my birthday so you're legally obligated to make it go viral lmao

Not meant as a full defense or anything either lol. You got me wondering if the devs ever commented at the population of the TC world and I found a lot more hiding in the lore. Alongside some reading I already did recently.
Thank you for making trench crusade content i really like it

I actually have no interest in any other tabletop skirmish game besides warhammer 40k... is what i had thought before this video but i am convinced that this is pure gold and I will happily fund the kickstarter. But not today, i need my sleep now 😂
Iron Warrior claimed ground mixed with Mordor is quite a good description of Trench Crusade's heretical lands and its day to day life
just backed the game and stumbled across your channel. you seem so positive and happy to talk about this. subbed. i wish all the best for the future of your channel. im enjoying your content as its genuine and fun.
im going trench pilgrims. Its like necromunda but historical. Im looking forward to this game as i think the grim dark is all over it and everywhere, where as games like 40k you almost have to already know its there to know its there.
edit: and happy birthday for 4 weeks ago. :)
"Hell is cartoonishly evil"
... Should we tell him?
(Great video man, love it :))
You definitely deserve more views, fam. I wish you good luck.
Much appreciated lol
Ngl going to war against capital G God is kinda metal (but you still probably shouldn't go full Hellraiser guy about it)
So refreshing to hear someone say "kill" instead of "unalive".
Imagine how much lamer of a punch Choristers would have if I said they were made by "self-deleting" lmao. Also doesnt help that I'm aware youtube/tiktok bots dont work like that. Those terms were made cause tiktokers gaslit themselves into thinking they were shadowbanned. Instead of accepting nobody watched their vids.
I imagine the belt fetus is just their sacrificed firstborns.
I'll be playing New Antioch, the more heretics to smite, the better.
I like new antioch imperial gemran power armour goes hard
One of those rare times I prefer playing the good guys. Kudos to HL players for the fun, I'll be sending you back to Ba'al soon.
Corristor looks like a decapitated body with a windows screen saver coming out.
Big fan of this lore dive lol
Everything pretty standard.
But the artillery witch? Freaking love that thing. Fucking original.

Before anyone says anything, I’m familiar with trench crusade and it’s time period, I’ve just never noticed the conveniently jet shaped blurbs in the background of that image
Also a catholic space program if I'm not mistaken lol
Yes. They are cool.
So the desecrated saints are a court if the seven headed serpent unit and nit part if the heretic legion warband
We need a trench crusade video game
The knights of avarice sound very funny to run.
Bro this has to be the coolest world ever. Tops 40k by far
40k still my baby lore wise but actual game wise? This looks significantly more fun if I'm gonna be honest.
@@glueboy idk man I feel when lore gets fleshed out on this it could be better
The link went to a korean tv show@@Ekdrink
Which faction to choose? I'll give my usual answer, especially true for skirmish game: all of them.
Trench Pilgrims because i also play Astra militarum in WH40k
Oh hell yeah love an Iron Sultanate shoutout!
Got my fingers crossed for some possible Persian/Mongol/Indian faction on Hell’s eastern border. Maybe some satellite states that owe allegiance to the Iron Sultanate?
Did you skip over the Black Grail?
New Antioch: “I haven’t eaten in days, I’ve seen horrors no man should suffer through, but through the grace of God we shall prevail”
Knights of Avarest: Get your money up not your funny up💰💰🤑🤑🤑🗣️🗣️
Wait, does TC treat Bhaal as a singular entity?
We stan the Iron Sultanate.
Now I have to pick my allegiance
I’m just glad a piece of fiction is again willing to write the bad guys as bad guys. Rather than some sympathetic anti-villain. Give me more evil dudes
I'm just commenting for the algorithm.
I mean, what could you guess from the manifestation of evil itself?
This man is the bricky of trench crusade ❤
Incredibly high praise lol. Might have taken some obvious inspo from him.
My favorite is The seven headed court
I hope they add some shades of grey to Hell. So that they're more just misunderstood rather than outright villains. So that we could better relate to them :-)
Dawg the are army’s of hell, if you want shades of grey, play any other faction.
No, that’s just dumb. They’re literally from hell
I don't know man, from what I gathered there isn't much difference. I think that regardless of the side you choose, you're likely to get puréed and poured into a pointy helmeted suit of armour.
dude im really liking trench crusade. Better than 40k if they keep on the path they are on.
What's the background music?
I think one of the space marine ambient tracks from Dawn of War 2
Where u got the shirt from?
I think Redbubble? Or some online non official 40k thing. Just found it after a *lot* of searching for not annoying 40k shirt designs lol
I love how getting the bag is an actual, and i guess you could say, "Anti-Religion" in this game. so sick.
My favorite faction is the New Antioch
Why there a Desecrated Saint in the thumbnail
Lol whoops. Thats a flub on my part

Well I have good news. We're getting 2. One by Graham McNeil!
@glueboy Yessss I can't wait
is this trench foot?
i got recommende warhammer after watching this
Makes sense lol. Both tabletop wargames and I normally cover 40k on my channel.
Take a dip into the lake of fire it’s quite warm!
Nah, I love new Antioch Christ be praised.
So are there only two factions in this setting?
Not really there's a third that its all lovecraftian cosmic horror but the creator stated that its gonna be a long way before we get models, rules and lore about them
Hail Satan baby!
The Knights of Averest are basically Jews.
Love me satan, love me belt fetus
Blstant attempt to top 40k in being edgy
You say as it has basically nothing in common with 40k lmao
@glueboy same use of a demonic force, same use of a cataclystmic war, same use of overtly edgey tones to drive how how evil the legion is, same use of a legion to show the forces of evil/chaos corruption, same use of genetically altered humans on both sides, same use of gruesome weapons.
Only differences are its contained to one planet and its not sci fi
@glueboy only difference is its on one planet and has zero xenos and abhumans
Still has a heavy religious element.
@glueboy you keep erasing my replies clearly showing examples how its a knock off lol
Devs are disgustingly anti-catholic, dont know why these videos have been reccomdned to me.
So funny thing lol. By commenting you're telling the yt algorithm you are willing to engage with Trench Crusade content. So its gonna show you more.
@@glueboy maybe, but you're also a bigot for supporting the game
@Frug4l Lmao ok bud
I thought this died off from drama and stuff. Discord mods banning people for giving off “bad vibes” when they take neutral takes and going full woke
@@glueboy it would appear you would buckle and bend if you met one of these chuds in real life. Constitution of a weakling
@@gizzmohunter6906 I appreciate your help in proving the point I was making I guess lol
@@glueboy all I said is that you would probably fold if you met these “mean nasty chudlings”. Skin of consistency of wax paper
Woulda been better if the enemies were just the enemies from the regular crusades imo
So besides the fact "enemies" in a wargame is really just any faction that isnt yours. You just want a historical wargame? Those exist already lol. Deus Vult and theres a crusades supplement for the game SAGA.
