- Pakistan is holding general elections on Thursday, a vote that critics say can be neither free nor fair. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan cannot run for office as he is currently in jail and members of his PTI party claim they are facing harrassment. The United Nations High Commission for Human Rights is calling for calm.
Some observers believe the biggest threat to Pakistan's democracy is the military. The army has ruled the nation for around half its existence - since Pakistan was formed in 1947. And critics claim the military has already decided who will win power this time.

The army has denied the right to vote for the overseas Pakistanis. 15 million Pakistanis live overseas, and the majority of them are Imran Khan supporters. The Army has not allowed the electronic system of voting for the overseas Pakistanis, thus denying them to use the right to vote.

What military has done to the people of Pakistan in the last 22 months is appalling. It has destroyed Pakistan's biggest political party PTI. It has managed to convict Pakistan's most popular leader Imran Khan in secret trials. Army has not allowed PTI to hold rallies. It banned mentioning of Imran's name on any TV channel. It deprived PTI of it election symbol make over 2000 candidates run for election as independent.
But this is not happening for the first time. Pakistan army has been involved in political engineering in Pakistan since Jinnah's death.

No they don't interfere in Panchayat or municipal or provincial elections. All these are free and fair. All matters related to the life of the common people are decided at these levels. But national level is a different matter. National interest should not be left to the cheap petty internal politicking of a largely illiterate population. So they have a strong educated elite and empowered security apparatus to play the game at the international table to protect national interests, which they have managed quite well so far. Good model. Can be adopted by other countries with large petty-minded illiterate populations.

Imran khan was not the Army's favorite son, even in 2018. Imran khan came up from the bottom at his own. Yes, the Army just let him in the office, but the message from the Army was straight forward, you have to toe our line. Otherwise, we would do the same to you what we did to other politicians. We have witnessed the same.
