  • Usually, lawn striping kits for your lawn mower cost well more than $100 each (if not bordering on a couple hundred). In this video, I share my cheap $10 solution for those of you looking to start striping your lawns without buying anything crazy expensive.
    This solution doesn't give you the best lawn stripes but if you pay closer the $15 bucks then your results will exponentially increase. Take a look to see what I've been experimenting with in my lawn this past week.

    I use a 4in x 24in piece of pvc capped off and filled with play sand. And I drag that behind my mower. Same cost more weight.

  • @Dantastic123
    @Dantastic123 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Just an fyi for those interested. I did something similar but used PVC filled with sand. The additional weight makes the self-propelled action much less effective. If works ok on a downhill grade, but any slight uphill grade and the wheels just spin, i still have to push weight into mower to get it to move. And it's no clunker, 7.25 lbs-ft of tq.

    Great tip. I'm going to hook one up sometime soon.
    Is that still Kikuyu grass on that part of the lawn? It is some of the best looking longer kikuyu I've seen, especially around here. If you have a video or any tips about how you made that happen so fast, I'd love to see it!

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Jay, unfortunately it's not Kikuyu yet. I killed off most of the old kik late fall and over winter them seeded annual rye there as a cover crop while I wait for soil temps to warm more. I may overseed kikuyu into it late this month, still got a few things to decide first though. Here's the vid of me growing the rye there last month th-cam.com/video/dNwszjM7ZLc/w-d-xo.html

    Don't forget to paint that steel rebar to prevent rust

    Not bad for 10bucks!! I've seen a similar setup with a pvc pipe filled with concrete. This looks a lot easier.

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  ปีที่แล้ว

      This turned out way simpler than I originally planned and it's so forgettable once those bars are there. I like that Im not actually dragging anything too. Since filming I decided I'd add one extra 18" bar giving me 3 lbs of weight back there and a few extra zip ties to keep it as secure as possible.

    • @AlexKunstar
      @AlexKunstar ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TurfMechanic yeah I really like that nothing is dragging too. It just seemlessly becomes part of the mower. 👍

      Yes,I'm gonna try this,I had a pvc pipe filled with sand attached to the flap,but it's hard to turn around

  • @j-man2759
    @j-man2759 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I do something similar, I use pvc pipe capped at each end full of sand.

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Did you zip tie it to the flap or did you rig a drag system?

    • @j-man2759
      @j-man2759 ปีที่แล้ว

      @TurfMechanic I zip tied it in 4 spots with heavy-duty ties. I originally tried rope with the purpose of hoping it would roll. But It would just drag and bounce. Having it tight to the guard is the way to go. I like your idea with the rebar , it's quicker cheaper. Plus, your idea keeps it level. The caps on the end of the pvc sometimes leave a track on the grass on higher cuts.

      Hehehe, winning you over a bit more every day. You'll probably clobber me on stripes everything but at least from now on I'll probably have some light striping action in the background of my vids. 😁

    When you do half rates of fertilizer like milorganite, do you just turn your spreader down to a lower number? Thanks man!

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's what I do. I will turn it down until almost nothing comes out then dial it up incrementally until it seems right. With most things in life practice makes it easier to feel it but most people can eyeball it good enough. 😀

    Did your battery range go down due to additional weight and drag?

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't tested this but I highly doubt it, it's just a few pounds, the bag of captured grass clippings weighs a lot more than the rebar.

  • @DirtygardenCA

    Very inexpensive mod, and it doesn't seem as awkward to mow compared to those fancy striping kits Toro and others sell.
    Are you ready for more rain?

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it's hardly noticeable at all. I don't know why all back flaps aren't weighted at the factory 🤔 ahh rain, it's raining as we speak. I wanted to get some fert on the front lawn prior to this rain but decided to cuddle and nap this afternoon with my three year old...probably why I'm awake now at modnight in the comments section listening to the active rain outside. 😃

      @@TurfMechanic Yup, same. I had to pick my daughter up last night, wanted to put some Fert down but was already dark when we got home. Considered going out with a flashlight but opted for family time instead.

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  ปีที่แล้ว

      I did actually! Put it in a vid a few weeks ago too! 😁 it probably won't get much darker than this as it's currently annual rye only. In another month I'll be overseeding whittet kikuyu into it and hopefully I'll be able to get a darker color out of that improved perennial grass type.

    I made a roller out of pvc and filled it with concrete.
