I agree. The only T Mac solo albums that are produced with a damn are Insanity, Security, and Premonition.... well Driver is good but it's not really solo. Security was his height IMO. Beautiful album. So melodic and well arranged. I really love this guy but his studio recordings are often weak sounding.
Play cuts from Maximum Security or anything Varney produced back to back with cuts from say Freedom To Fly. If you can't hear the difference in the quality of the recording, then nothing I say will make you hear it.
@runthemachine Hi. If you are responding to the comment about which albums were produced the best, IMO, Freedom To Fly had horrid production. I do not think that was Varney. It was on Shrapnal but I think it was Mac himself. That was my only complaint about that album. Great songs. Poor sound IMO.
haha. Well, not ALL of the studio work sux, only the stuff that wasn't done by Mike Varney. It's a shame that after all these years, he has yet to match the quality his first two cds.... three if you count Project Driver.
So, you don't care how poorly something is recorded? Thankfully most artists don't feel the same. I saw Man Of Steel Saturday. It was a horrid piece of CG pablum; a vapid caricature of the iconic American hero. But most of the audience thought it was just awesome. They're so fortunate. Seriously, to each his own but Tony is a true artist and if he'd produce better recordings he'd enjoy the celebrity he deserves. The albums that stand out are the ones Varney produced. Because they sound better.
Yes, the music matters. That's why it should be recoded better. You're making a really nonsensical argument really. You're saying, 'I don't care if it sounds like shit, it's great music.' I'm saying, 'it's great music, too bad it sounds like shit.' Get your ears checked.
EVOLUTION - MADNESS - CHROMATICITY - PREMONITION -

@IYAMNI / I agree with you. Those first 2 lp's he did were freakin amazing!
Excellent. Bought his first album many years ago - mainly neo-classical workouts. He's better in this.
@IYAMNI I know this post is a year old... but you fail to mention Freedom To Fly, which I thought was phenomenal. I wore out 3 copies of that disc.
3:10 ... PURE POWER!!!
