  • Tanzania is an incredible country from the beaches of Zanzibar to the 16 national parks such as Serengeti National Park. You will meet many locals while you are in Tanzania and you probably will want to tip when required. Here we talk about tipping guides, drivers, hotel staff, and more when you are on safari or just visiting Tanzania for fun.

    Again, nailed it. We Brits don’t tip because it’s not necessary where we live, mostly. Everywhere else we need to. It’s an income stream we are just not used to. When in the US it’s a real shock, tips are required. Really, the wealthiest country on the plant does not pay staff! Other places, no issue. Tip and thank the staff. They earn it. Thanks for the upside.

      @jojofromtx its not a law to tip but youre socially pressured to do so becaus of the laughable minimum wage for servers!

    • @paulfredfield
      @paulfredfield 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      jojofromtx I never realised that the staff relied on tips. Really, I didn’t . Coming from a leftist continent it never occurred to me that management did not pay a living wage. Please don’t judge us, it really is unexpected. We nearly moved to the US about 20 years ago with my job, but the pay and holiday entitlement and healthcare provision made it impossible. I retired at 55 and am glad I could. It’s not perfect here, but I can eat and see a dr fairly quickly. Waiting staff there were brilliant, our waiting staff here could learn a bit about service. I seem to be going round in circles..!

      You *do* know that tipping was originally a British custom, don't you? That it was created in Tudor times to compensate those who housed the monarch while s/he was on progress, and that WE learned it from YOU? Please stop turning it into a criticism of America; you're biting your own tail.

      In the US Deep South they can legally pay the doormen and bellboys 1$ per hour. Each person that tips below the expected amount per person actually passively costs the service provider because income tax is based on occupancy of the hotel, not on undocumented, cash income.
      In Baltimore I had to dispute a bill for 25$ car service. That is the bell man taking the bag from the car to the room, keeping it safe during the registration process. I arrived by subway train, my bag had wheels, I pulled it myself. Wheeled luggage was a new thing then. Hotels often charge outrageous prices covered by business expense claims... But wow!
      Looking back on the Baltimore experience I realize that the convention I attended was an outlier on the poor side. Likely all the service staff those 5 days were losing money going to work. A significant hit to their bank accounts!

    • @paulfredfield
      @paulfredfield 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nick Hentschel forgive me, it’s not meant as a criticism per se, it’s just the wealthiest nation NOW still needs tips to pay for their staff. We may have started it, but it’s no reason to keep doing it. Just my opinion of course!

    At the end of our safari at the Serengeti I gave our driver a $100 tip . But I made the mistake of giving it in a
    One Hundred Dollar Bill USD . At the time I didnt realize it , but I found out later that it would be very hard for him to successfully break the bill . I wish I would've known that earlier, and tipped him in small bills.

    Because I was living in Arusha when I went on safari so I tipped in local currency, the Tschilling. On safari I tipped the driver 20,000 per person per day. At the time, it was about $20. And I always paid in brand new notes.

    I never understand giving tips. If I paid for a trip and my guide get money from tourist office, why should I give the tip to him/her?

    • @ProfessorWolters
      @ProfessorWolters 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      because companies don't always pay their employees like they should. And there is no point in complaining as you are not helping anyone except for yourself (ie your wallet) when you don't tip. The waiter, guide, driver, whatever they are doing is the one that is hurt by this. That is why we do these videos so people can know if it is a place they should tip or not. I understand why you are asking and I do not think bad of you at all, I am just the messenger :)

    I sincerely appreciate your advice, but I must say that tipping is a horrid practice. One should receive a livable wage for the services one offers. If you're relying on tips to make ends meet the economic model is wrong.

    • @redelfshotthefood8213

      I was on the receiving end of atrocious service many times in the UK. No incentive to treat restaurant customers well pervaded the culture there. Contrast that to Australia, a country without a tipping expectation, and the treatment was far superior to the UK. Perhaps there was a bias against Canadians in the UK, but not in Aus? Or... Is it the culture?
      I ran into trouble tipping in PR China in 1996, but by 1997 tipping was okay. That is in 1996, people actively refused tips. In 1997, they expected them. The world changes.

    • @claressalucas8922
      @claressalucas8922 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@redelfshotthefood8213 The atrocious service you received may just have been a British thing. They're not a terribly service oriented people. Personally, I've always received excellent service in the UK. But, I only dine in high end or ethnic (read: Indian) restaurants when I'm there. I've only been to Australia once (Melbourne) and found it to be disappointingly similar to my suburban American existence. In China (Hong Kong, actually) I make it a practice to never set foot in a restaurant, being well fed by street vendors.
      IMHO tipping is not what gets you good service. After all, Chik-Fil-A provides some of the best service in the world without tips. Pride in one's work and sufficient managerial support are what truly make the difference.

    Perspective: a maid was paid 10$ a month to take care of a baby and other duties... In Kenya, in 1995.
    At that time, the safari drivers I used were the only overweight people I saw in Kenya. The drivers were massively overweight, and treated like Kings by the locals. The safari drivers were the 1%ers in Kenya.
    I tried to give the maid a 10$ tip for the 3 weeks I'd stayed... And my hosts nearly had a coronary! They explained that a tip like that would destabilize their relationship with the maid. They would handle tipping the maid. Not wanting to upset my hosts, I left it up to them.
    I had thought the maid was quite young... She was 40. She had 3 kids of her own. She paid for her own maid, fed, and clothed her family out of the wages she earned. Let that sink in. She basically supported 2 families on that 10$ a month.
    Inflation and prosperity have both worked on the region in the past 25 years... I can't speak to the 20$ minimum, 10$ per person per day tip for safari in 2019. It does sound on the high end though.
