CONFLICT RESOLUTION SKILLS (part 1) NATURE OF A CONFLICT - The word" conflict" comes from the latin word" conflictus" which means collision or clash. - def: conflict is a struggle between opponents over values and claims, power and resources. DEFINING CONFLICTS - defining conflict also depends on the nature of conflict as something that takes place in society and between people For example, conflict is commonly understood as: . A form of opposition between parties. . An abs3nce of agreemant between parties. . A way to solve social contradictions . A natural process in human social interact. . - conflict takes place whenever incompatible activites occur.one party is interfering , disrupting , obstructing, or in some other way making another party's action less effective. - conflict is an interaction between actors (individuals, groups, organizatios etc). - where at least one actor senses incompatibilities between their thinking, imagination, perception, and/or feeling, and those of the others. TYPES OF CONFLICT - the caterorization of conflicts into types can help us to understand the nature of conflict we are dealing with better. - the conflict types are:- 1. Intrapersonal conflicts 2. Interpersonal conflicts 3. Intragroup 4. Intergroup 5. And international/global 1): INTRAPERSONAL CONFLICTS - Intrapersonal conflicts: these are conflicts which occur with in individual as a result of frustration they feel with themselves over their personal goals, targets, plans or accomplishments, or as a result of completing values and questions of consciences. - intrapersonal conflict can be seen as a person's inability to make a decision(motivational), as an inner fight between good and evil(moral), or as the gap between reality and ambition(unrealistic desire or unbalanced self-appraisal). 2): INTERPERSONAL CONFLICTS - interpersonal conflicts: these are conflicts that take place between two individuals, which reoccur on a regular basis during their relationship. . Eg: conflicts between couples in relationships, between superiors and subordinates in a work context, between students and teachers. - interpersonal conflicts has been descriped as a situation in which one or both persons in a relationship are experincing difficutly in working or living with each other. 3): INTRAGROUP CONFLICTS - conflicts of this kind are usually associated with 1. Hate 2. Betrayal 3. Distrust 4. Anger 5. Unequal sharing of power. - it is a type of conflict that happens among individuals with in a team. - incompatibilities and misunderstandings among these individuals lead to an intragroup conflict. -eg: team members have different personalities which may lead to tension or differences in views and ideas. 4): INTERGROUP CONFLICTS - intergroup conflicts: takes place when a misunderstanding arises among different teams with in an organization. Eg: sales department of an organization can come in conflict with the customer support department. 5): INTERNALTIONAL/GLOBAL CONFLICTS - these include conflicts between nation states, global and regional competition over natural resources. - conflict in international/global involves 1.
