They used to allow export on special occasions like during Durga Puja to Diwali, as the demand for the fish grew manifold in this period. Earlier a lot of good quality Indian Hilsa caught from Kolaghat, Diamond Harbour was being sold by branding them Padma (Bangladesh) Hilsa, because that fish is more popular amongst the partition immigrants from East Bengal and they always had the nostalgia that Padma Hilsa caught near Chandpur and Mawa (both in present-day Bangladesh) was of the best quality. Now with successive generations, the old native place nostalgia is dying, as they have never been there, and the Indian Hilsa is of equally good quality. Hence, the Indian Hilsa consumer don't give a damn about the absence of the Bangladesh fish.

Earlier a lot of good quality Indian Hilsa caught from Kolaghat, Diamond Harbour was being sold by branding them Padma (Bangladesh) Hilsa, because that fish is more popular amongst the partition immigrants from East Bengal and they always had the nostalgia that Padma Hilsa caught near Chandpur and Mawa (both in present-day Bangladesh) was of the best quality. Now with successive generations, the old native place nostalgia is dying, as they have never been there, and the Indian Hilsa is of equally good quality. Hence, the Indian Hilsa consumer don't give a damn about the absence of the Bangladesh fish.

We don't want Hilsa fish.we have our own Hilsa in Ganga & other rivers.The Hilsa fish that comes here are mostly from sea only 2% is from padma river.
