Fun fact, the "Shotgun Boost" you can perform in ULTRAKILL by punching shotgun pellets as you fire them was originally a bug found in the original, non-steam version of the demo. For whatever reason, you could parry your own shotgun pellets as if they were an enemy's attack. So it got turned into a feature.

Reminds me of Street Fighter 2 how the whole combo system was a mistake they instead developed into a feature. Like the TF2 Spy being based on a glitch in TF Classic.
i wish i had a solution like that for when my real life shotgun bullets weren't going fast enough or exploding (as all bullets should)

He has some kind of grudge against that table and I don’t think i’ve ever seen him explain why.
They had him playtest the game and he just jumped around and yelled at that table for a bit according to other new blood members.

I always figured Dave Oshry had a surprisingly long arm that seemed to suspiciously lead directly up Civvie's backside. This theory would confirm that he is indeed just a puppet for our memelord and savior's development house.

14:07 The FOV only feels weird because this is one of those games where the setting means the vertical field of view you get, and not the corresponding 4:3 horizontal FOV, meaning that 90 in this game translates to 106 in many other games. The function to convert one FOV to the other is actually pretty simple in this range, you pretty much just have to subtract 16 from vertical to get the more common 4:3 value.
That goes a way into explaining why 70fov in some games feels fine, and not so fine in others.

I love the cracked noise gloomwood character makes. It makes sense because normally his faulty leg (the reason he has a cane instead of a normal sword) isnt much of a hindrance but when worn down by hardships in the town it becomes extremely noticable

4:45 The pump action mode for the shotgun is EXACTLY what I want from a reload system for an FPS. It rewards you for not firing for a short bit by making your next couple shots MORE powerful than firing regularly. If and when I get into making my own fps stuff this is a system I definitely plan on using myself.
Ironic, because that's also the mode with the fastest fire rate.
I think you'll enjoy SYNTHETIK then, it has a very interesting reload mechanic.
Fun tip from someone who's played Ultrakill WAY too much. When you dash, you are invincible for roughly 12 frames during the dash. When you overcharge the pump shotgun it releases a really powerful explosion on the spot you hit the fire button. You can combine these two by dashing then immediately shooting the gun to get that giant explosion with 0 damage (or only 20 damage if you're a little off). Also this game has a grappling hook now and it's beautiful.

My favourite animation so far is the shotgun that doesn't have shells, but power cells you have to cool by dropping the break-action. And sometimes, the character ejects the cells entirely and catches them again in the chamber.

@Manek Iridius Because where there's a will, there's a way. Those Dragonslayer shots, soul arrow snipes and firebomb cheeses aren't going to make themselves!
And there's not much to really look at in terms of scenery typically, primarily graphically at least, outside of the novelty of spacial awareness and figuring out where you are in relation to other locations physically, so some external use and a godsend.
@Manek Iridius makes bow and arrow a bit easier, like pulling off good shots against a gank as an invader. But its janky as hell in typical from fashion. These games have flaws, you know. People can criticize them.

8:40 Combat was also a real option in Thief 1, in the easiest difficulty at least where killing is allowed. Being able to block the enemies attacks, but if they have bows or can attack from certain distances, then you're screwed.
What Gloomwood does better is the movement. It doesn't feel stiff like the Dark engine games.
I feel like the thief comparisons kinda hide what gloomwood really is. There’s some thief in there, sure, but it’s more resident evil than theif IMO.

One thing you didn't mention about Gloomwood is how great the controls are. It's mostly just Thief controls, but less floaty. I simply love games with tight controls like this, it even helps with getting immersed.

That's one of the best parts of the retro/remake trend, hearing some of the seriously under-rated talent back in the game - from Jon St. John showing his villainous side in Ion Fury to the zombie-slaying return of the sadly-late Paul Haddad in Daymare 1999. And Terri Brosius' return as SHODAN is also on the way!

After watching the Dusk 1 year anniversary dev stream and playing through the game 6 times on my own I've become a huge fan of New Blood and the way they make their games.

As an SMT fan who's been around since SMT4: Apocalypse, thank you for saying this.
I like the game, but people have been WAY too eager to overlook P5's flaws, and that was a big one for me. The other games' graphics have aged, and the character models don't look what I'd call "good" most of the time, but nobody really could ever seem to agree with me on what looked wrong about P5.
I could never quite put my finger on it until after replaying P4 Golden on PC, but the older games' models, while bad, were never focused on so much in the games, they were never trying to be MORE than they were: Mere representations of the characters in Combat/Explorative scenes. The character portraits handled all of that just fine, and P5 still does this to an extent.
It's just that P5 tried to make everybody's model "hi-res" to try and draw more mainstream attention, because we all know that people really pay attention when flashy trailers with fancy graphics catch their eye. It sucks, but it's the way it is. You can tell they tried to refocus this way too, with the addition of every character starting with a "costume" and the camera being panned down and centered closely behind the cast rather than the Isometric/Top-Down dungenon-crawler we had prior.
Problem being that it gave me HELLA Uncanny Valley kinda vibes, like no. All the people in P5 are trying to look anime AND hi-res at the same time and it just freaks me out.
Too bad they didn't focus on fixing the subpar story beats with that time. Yeah, P5 fans I said it. Half the story is trash and the other half is rehashing from previous games.

Ultrakill: Doom Eternal on a budget. Played the hell out of this in anticipation for Doom to drop, and now Civvie is playing it.

I'm playing E.Y.E. currently, but I just don't see Civvie playing it. The constantly respawning enemies are frustrating and keep me from getting anything done. It's tough to dick around when you're instantly getting surrounded no matter how much you kill.

One great thing about ultrakill. You can parry melee attacks, or even just any attack that has the little warning spark. That means that when the malicious face charges up its hitscan explosive attack, the moment you see the little spark you can parry it. This goes even further though because shotguns can be used to parry as well, and the pump action shotgun after two pumps can take the malicious face out in no time at all. If you play it right, you can enrage the malicious face with a double pumped shotgun blast at point blank, then when it gets enraged, jump up to it again as it's charging its explosive attack and parry it in the face with another point blank shotgun blast. You can take this even further by doing the projectile boost punch if you're at a good enough medium distance
Gloomwood might me be game that I always wanted. A Thief inspired game where you are an assassin and instead of robbing you are "neutralizing" enemies and posibly have contracts on inportant persons, in victorian England? Sign me up.

That pretty much just the Dishonored game with a dose of steampunk thrown in for good measure. They even got Stephen Russell to voice one of the playable leads in 2.
@@DavidDDavidsonSA I know but I always wanted one that felt and looked like Thief, without powerups, just a simple man with a complex arsenal, a combination of Thief and Hitman for example. I know Dishoroned is good but still.
