    The shiny surface is simply machined before chrome plating. The rest is sand blasted to give a matte finish. Same chrome all over

    I've been using the 916HP for a bit over 2 months now.
    It falls into the "industrial" tool farm for me, as opposed to the "fine automotive" tool farm. The reason I say this is because of the amount of torque needed to reset the ratchet. I find myself holding the socket sooner with this tool than a snap-on ratchet, as the fastener will spin back upon getting another bite. I've actually changed ratchets mid-bolt to confirm this. As I said in my review of the 916HP several weeks ago, for $50 on amazon.de its an unbeatable bargain.
    Thanks again GTR for turning me on to the brand!

    I think the shiny portion on the Head is becauase the handle ist a rough forged surface and the head would have been surfaceground in to size.

    Thanks for the excellent review video, GTR. I really appreciate the even-keeled approach, and I especially like the way that the narration stays away from the "showmanship" that so many YT presenters include in their video productions. If I hear one more Richard Rawlings style "Let 'er Rip, Tater Chip" narration ripoff, I just might join the so-called "opioid crisis."

  • @phucdatbich1990
    @phucdatbich1990 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's a partial FOD design. No screwed cover plates are allowed working on things like aero engines. However, and rather curiously, it doesn't have locking QR like true FOD designs from the likes of Stahlwille .

    • @jonrobertson2269
      @jonrobertson2269 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is locking/quick-release required for anti-FOD ratchets? My Stahlwille's are all Quick release but I noticed that Snap-On's FOD ratchets aren't.

    That spring holding it all together is also due to aviation industry requirements: Ratchets with screws on them are not to be used on aircraft engines for obvious reasons.

  • @6tausender

  • @JonDisnard
    @JonDisnard 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's chrome, just the metal is ground smoother in that one place. The chrome plate is done by emersion of the whole tool in a bath.

    • @GermanToolReviews
      @GermanToolReviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So you think it is the same chrome applied to the rest of the ratchet? I supposed it could be machined surface that was chromed and thereby looks different. I would have expected it to look a bit more matte even if the underlying surface was grounded.

    • @JonDisnard
      @JonDisnard 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I've noticed most German tools are matte chrome. They usually don't polish the tools smooth before chrome plating, so it's amusing that one surface was polished to achieve a dual matte/polish chrome.

    Excellent review, like all your videos. Do you know what is the maximum load supported by the SP model? The HP declines 1000 nm but does not say anything about the SP on the web page

  • @jokinabadsbs
    @jokinabadsbs 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    The chrome part you said is just false. the shiny part is because was ground to the specifications. If the forging is sand blasted, and then chromed you get matt chrome, but when machining is needed (like with the head) then is more expensive to re-sandblast everything, so one good looking option is to sand that machined part and then chrome the whole tool. Heyco and some hazet wrench heads for example are also some tools with this feature.

    • @GermanToolReviews
      @GermanToolReviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was just speculating, giving my best guess. Is the part underneath the switch lever not machined? I could have sworn that the inside of the ratchet had a matte chrome finish as well. Maybe that particular surface was machined separately?

    • @jokinabadsbs
      @jokinabadsbs 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      German Tool Reviews The part you mention is forged. the only machined surface needed here is the thickness of the head, and you are right, is machined apart of the ordinary-all matte chrome. Hazet this time has machined the "visible" or front part. Everything else in the exterior is forged, sanded, sandblasted and chromed.

    Why would they make a ratchet that's capable of withstanding over 700 lb ft of torque so short? You'd have to be the Incredible Hulk to put that much force on the handle and a cheater bar wouldn't fit right because of the ratchet design and would probably just destroy the grip.

    • @GermanToolReviews
      @GermanToolReviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I calculated 900 pounds of force at the middle of the handle. Maybe they will release a long version, just extend the shaft another 250mm.

      I'm wondering if Hazet is following the same strategy as Stahlwille from when they rolled out the 80-tooth ratchets. First just standard, short handled ratchets in 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" then after a year or two introducing other variants (long/flex/1/4" bit, etc.)

    • @tunichtgut5285
