  • Here is the part 3 of a series all about drum set chart reading. It is geared towards beginning to intermediate players who already have basic drum set skills. This chart, Alianza by Eric Morales, is a bit more advance than the previous two selections.
This tune is written in a Latin-Jazz Style and transitions between a mambo/songo groove and a straight-ahead jazz feel.
I play the chart and then talk about the equipment I use to play this type of music. I also discuss interpreting the chart with short and long sounds on the drum set.
Finally, I play it again with the music on the screen so that you can see how I set up the figures.
    Here are the time stamps:
    0:00 Alianza Chart Demo
    3:33 Introduction
    5:15 Latin to Jazz Transitions
6:17 Cymbals for playing Latin Jazz
    7:22 Chart Excerpts Intro
9:38 Applying the Songo to Bar 115
10:41 Playing with a Conga Player
    11:44 Chart Excerpts M173
12:51 Play through with the Chart on Screen
The kit I am using is a Gretsch Catalina Elite set from the early 1990's. I use this as my portable practice kit as well as a small gigging kit.
    The sizes are:
16" BD, 12" and 14" toms and a Ludwig 5"x14" Black Beauty snare.
    The cymbals are:
    Paiste 22" Traditional Light Ride
Paiste Traditional 16" and 17" crashes
    1950's K Zildjian 18" Crash/Ride
    Sabian 13" HH regular Hihats
    Masterwork Thalles Series 24" China/Swish.

These chart play alongs and analyses are just excellent Rik. Different grooves, applied breaks, dynamics, cymbal selections, there's so much in here quite apart from the reading itself. Whatever style of drums you play, it's an education. Bravo.

I hate how busy this chart is… I could dump much of the notation, leave some of your notes as they spell out the more crucial set ups / figures. I feel many Latin charts are needlessly busy.
But as always, your playing is remarkably good. I like how you say “you could do a left foot clave here” haha, no I can’t… Your independence and Latin feel is too good…

      Hi
As you probably know, drum charts range from a page of slashes to every possible rhythm. The more details, the better for me, but composers and arrangers should try and refrain from writing the imagined groove out and stick to the style description and hits.

Where do you obtain charts with quality play along without drums such as these?
