That ring is for leveling the stove on uneven surfaces. On level ground, just spin the ring so the thickest part of the ring in right next to, but not under, the one of the feet. It's a very simple but effective feature that works surprisingly well. The upper parts of this stove are flimsy and bend easily. I though that was just cheap BS construction when I first used it. After many many drops, bangs and bruises though, I see the genius in it. You can straighten all of it out with your bare hands or pliers to be as good, or better than new in just a minute. A great, well designed little stove that can take abuse and is easily serviced. I would recommend keeping a service kit with the spare o-rings and an extra generator in your kit with it. They are very reliable, but when those o-rings wear out, they don't work right.
I like the compact size of the stove. My current portable stove uses the large butane canisters very cumbersome and large foot print. I'll have to look into this one!
I bought six of these earlier last year NIB for $8 each in a local shop. I gave four away for x-mas gifts. The one that I did light seemed to like to leak at the nut on the fuel line when using kerosene. Other than that these are great little stoves.
I just recently bought one from Dutch army (comes with a cool hard plastic case shaped to the stove). It arrived with combustible inside and kerosene generator installed (and was probably just lighted once). Obviously it was probably diesel/kerosene inside and my 1st light test did not go well. At first sight I though it leaked at the nut also. But looking closer it seems the diesel had a hard time burning as fast as it was pouring out and I think it overflowed on the control knob (you have a hole in the reflector aligned with it). Hopefully I had turned off the knob just before the overflow happened as I saw it wasn't burning well but it still got in flame around the knob and the stove ended up with a pot of water on it... Still need to buy the correct generator but in the mean time it's working better with gasoline inside (BTW it's a pain to drain these things) and no more "leaking" problem.
I have one of these! Nice little stove, lights quickly, works well. My only criticism is the support ring is a bit flimsy and I'm afraid to put a heavy pot on it.
Amazon had a similar coleman stove the " 533 " duel fuel single burner. But now it's currently not available. Thanks for the video. Enjoyed as always .
The 533 is a bit larger and heavier. As you say it’s designed for gasoline type fuels only... the 550 will burn kerosene or as the military calls it... JP8.
The generator was probably loose because the first thing a soldier would do is install the kerosene generator. I think they’ve transitioned to the msrxgkex.
I have a 502 and 400A that i have run on Coleman fuel, unleaded gas, charcoal lighter fluid, kerosene ,Naphtha/mineral spirits and Jet A. I keep 5 gal of low odor mineral spirits around as it has a better shelf life than gas or kero. it works in my single mantel lantern fine also. And it does not seem to gum up the works like gas will over time. Very versatile little stoves.
Can you specify what exactly is "no odor mineral spirits?" I'm currently on this vintage Coleman kick, have been trying to find out what the most cost effectove way to burn these stoves are without having to do too much cleaning if at all of the generators. The Coleman fuel is ~$13/ gal whilst the Crown fuel is ~$9/ gal at walmart at the moment, which isn't too bad at all, imho.
@@hervue85 "Low" Odor , i got it at menards last time , it has less of a smell to it when exposed to air and i think it smells less when its burning. Otherwise its the same as normal naphtha/mineral spirits .
My first backpacking stove was a Peak 1 back in the 1970's. It was heavy on my back but I was young. I must admitt, it was reliable in extreme conditions. I was so glad though when I downsized to a Svea 123. That was the ultralite stove of that time ...
Others do a boil test with only 1 cup of water, I find 2 cups to be much more real worldish. Thanks. Sorry the leak scared you so badly but glad it was simple to resolve.
Mine was made in August 1998. I haven’t used it for years but I carry in my camping gear as a backup. Mine needs a new controller knob (mine has melted because it caught fire just where yours leaked) but it’s not available from Coleman here in Australia. Actually, Coleman Down Under are pretty useless.
"Heavy"? I carried this stove for a number of years, in a square can, (Coleman), and I loved it. It would light at minus 30C, in Feb, for my morning coffee 😂
I considered getting a six foot long extension hose to connect my Coleman stove to a twenty pound propane cylinder. Then I read the reviews on Amazon about using one of those extension hoses to hook up a Coleman stove to a twenty pound propane cylinder. The reviews were not good. In some cases the fittings don't work properly unless modifications are made. Others said the Coleman stove can't handle the pressure from a twenty pound propane cylinder and it tears up the regulator. I'm glad I read those reviews before trying that.
I've done that for decades for both Coleman stoves and lanterns. You want to make sure you get the correct fittings that reduce the pressure down to what the stove will tolerate. I bought mine from Coleman back in the 80's. Never had an issue.
I have the same stove EX Dutch Army. Need to fix the pump though. ;) You can get a leather replacement pistonseal instead of the plastic one. The ring is to level it. ;)
I absolutely love your videos! I have started my prep and I was actually going to get a bulk of my INCH Bag with my stimulus check. Is there any way you could make a video of $600ish of gear you would use as the same concept?
Kerosene is one of those great Prepper fuels... especially in the northeast where it can be obtained from gas station pumps or home heating oil companies. I’m pretty sure it runs auto gas with the non-notched jet... that being said between the three auto gas is the least desirable. Once it’s going, kerosene will be cleaner. Crown/coleman camp fuel will be cleanest.
The ring is beveled and thicker on on side. You spin it on unlevel ground to adjust the leg to keep it level.
Great score.
Awesome info.

Models with plastic leveling ring slightly twist to level the legs on a gentle, uneven surface🔥🧯 www.oldtowncoleman.com/manuals/550B.pdf
Had one since about 1981. Used it for backpacking/canoeing. Learned a thing. Wow #1. Best
So cool. I didn’t even know the corps used these? In my time we only had hearing pockets that used water to ignite the heater.
They work very well. I've used them thousands of times.
Those are great stoves, we used them in the USAF as well. *HOOOAH Great Video* !
Lol we barely get matches in our MRE now 😂

really cool - love old school, now the decision: what is the best coffee pot for this
My favorite wintertime small stove.

Ty for the info.

Yes these are meant for light cookware. I want to get a firebox for heavy stuff.
Well thats pretty neat. Would definitely be handy in a power outage situation
I love these stoves.

Ha, I still have my Svea 123 from the early 80’s. We used to backpack in the Sierras every summer. Ah, I miss those times.
Thats a nice looking stove, very cool.
I’ve been looking for the oven they make
Can’t buy it in England
So one second hand, but looked like it had been to Bagdad
THKS
That is awesome and they sell for a good amt of cash too, you got a great deal on that trade
Hello whichever is the most powerful heat in Coleman 550B when using Kerosene or Gazoline ?????
I have a dual fuel coming in the mail, it's was significantly less and newer then one I had bid on

Right on!
I have used one of these for over 40 years, and run gasoline, Coleman fuel, kerosene,, diesel, alcohol and vodka.....
Coleman makes a device
To fill it without spilling the fuel.

Should be able to. I have bought some leather pump cups off eBay from a guy in Texas. I've had great results.
@@flaviusbarker9388 Nice, i want one for my Powerhouse ;)

do you want to sell it?
Good old boyz are rising.
If it burns Coleman fuel it'll burn gasoline.
The rising has started
