@kylerd5663 Me too, and I'm frequently surprised how often an author will take a very long hiatus only to eventually come back and continue a story. It's sadly still not frequent enough for me to be willing to hold my breath so to speak.
There's a lot of background thinking that authors have to do before they start writing up the story. All the interweaving lore needs ot make sense. Sometimes they only intended to write the first one, but then the surprise popularity makes them sit back down and "think it out" before writing the sequels.
5:37 the caption and crew of PDF Icarus know full well they have absolutely no chance of defeating the enemy but if their sacrifice can ensure the escape of just 1 civilian vessel then they have done their duty and will gladly do so.
A lot of writers try to portray violent first contacts as just misunderstandings. This one sure wasn't. Station: "We'll use our tractor beam." Alien ship shoots tractor beam first.
Yankee drawl us a hard term to pin down. Some hear a new york accent (one of the primary 3 of them) some hear a phili accent, yet the most ubiquitous accent in new england is the most 'normal' sounding accent of them all you get from PA/NY/NH/ME....which is basically just the Amish but more clipped. It is the stereotypical 'American' voice of every movie. They never use the Cali accent or western accents in movies...they use that New England accent that is basically considered 'accentless' to most of America itself. That being the most commented thing about the 'yanks' was that they have no character, no accent outside of a few small places because anyone can sound like them if they strip away their own accent. That is the truist 'yankee drawl'. Though most authors seem to default to bronx accent for it or the waterfront phili accent. Net Narrator saw 'drawl' and defaulted to a southern. However this in itself is understandable too. Do remember, a 'yanke' or a 'yankee' is just another term for American to the rest of the world.
Nice story, but several technical issues keep cropping up that ruin my suspension of disbelief. The station commander takes way too long to realize her station is under attack. The UI for her view screen is woefully lacking in info. Things like zoom info and basic stats like ship size should have been part of her display. And if a 1500 meter long ship is close enough to see in detail without zoom, it's well inside 1000 in. "It's accelerating." "It's speeding up!" Yes, "speeding up" is what "acceleration" means. If the officer meant that the enemy was increasing acceleration, then say that and eliminate the ambiguity. For something that can cross a system (is millions of km) in 10 minutes, stopping it short of the station at 1000 kilometers is awfully close. Limitations of tractor beams I guess, but that begs the question of why the station doesn't have other means of stopping errant ships. One hot mic can completely jam all other communications around a busy station. Surely having only one person able to speak at a time has no safety issues for traffic control. Why would they want to hold multiple conversations with multiple ships at the same time?
The one mike thing (hot mike) was standart until the 1993 plane-crash in Palme -Tenerife, and apparently in the far future. Mayday= please com and help, Mayday + flee the system, is nonsense. And yes having a 1000 km tractor beam as the only defence you power up when under attack, is weak. Do better.

Last stands can be awesome and they can be horrible. Sigil's Last Stand was awesome. Well read.
o7 Capt. Sigil o7
Love the story. Strikes strait in the feels. Saluting the brave little ship.
Appreciate the Acting you put into the Voices NN .. Awesome!
The moment that thing accelerated would have been the signal to action stations.

Cap'n Sigil's "Yankee drawl" is bending my brain. Strictly defined, a Yankee hails from New England.

Author is a Harry Potter or Emma Watson fan?
Odds are in favor of that. However, they may have just settled on a less common human name in order to reduce the likelihood of similarity.
@scottl369 or option C: all of the above, Harry Potter fan, Emma Watson fan, and uncommon name.

don't underestimate what a tractor beam can do. Just stopping a ship dead would do structural damage.
