(2nd April 1966) Match Of The Day - Scotland v England

2nd April 1966: With the 1966 World Cup Finals imminent the last round of the traditional end of season Home Internationals was brought forward at Englands request. Unfortunately for the clubs battling relegation and European football there was a full fixture of games played on the same weekend and the Home Nations were given the chance to pick all the players they wanted.
Stranger still Match of the Day had initially chose to broadcast this weekend's game between Liverpool and Sheffield United but that game was snowed off so they moved their cameras to Hampden Park. The Scots, of course, were hoping to send the English home with the tails between their legs in this mini classic. The great shame is that only ten minutes of footage is currently available to collectors.
Scotland: Ferguson, Grieg, Gemmell, Murdoch, McKinnon, Baxter, Johnstone, Law, Wallace, Bremner, Johnston.
England: Banks, Cohen, Newton, Stiles, J Charlton, Moore, Ball, Hunt, B Charlton, Hurst, Connelly.

My wee mum and dad got married in Drumchapel Registry office that day. Most of the men were late to the wedding.
