    Your feelings about that pavement landing remind me of how I felt leading up to my initial solo. My instructor was telling me I was ready, but I was nervous about it. I was nervous right until he got out of the plane. When the door closed and I was alone, there was one last 'wow' moment, and then it was all procedure. I was totally in the zone and the nerves went away. Good job, and great video.

    Love that plane. My dad owned a stearman in the 50's that looked just like that one. He bought it for $600.00 and the nose art said "The Outlaw" on it. He flew it for a summer and sold it.

    Another great one Steve! I'm drooling over the Stearman that lives in the hanger right behind my Cherokee. Looks just like Dennis' except she sports the stars and bars. Keep the videos coming! I know you know this...but man! What an AWESOME instructor you have in Dennis. We should all have an instructor like him! The air is still warm down here. (comparitively) ....watch out ....if I could steal him to come down here and teach me Stearman flying....I would! :-) Give him a big thanks from me for being in all the flying videos.....he adds a tremendous amount to them!

    One thing I teach for pitch control in the pattern is to make any changes looking forward. All too often I see people on their turn to base or final looking out their side window like the runway is going to move. I always make the joke that it's not an aircraft carrier. What tends to happen is when they turn their head they inadvertently pull back on the yoke or stick and actually hold their altitude; this will bleed off airspeed especially if the flaps are extended. Once rolling out of the turn they see that they are slow and they'll add power and maintain an shallow descent pitch attitude. Once on final they are high and they pitch down to get back on glide slope with the additional power. Voila you have a high and fast approach.

    Another great video Steve! One thing I would be really interested in is if you did a video explaining the procedure through taxi, runup, take-off, and landing. I have always been curious about what it means to have the mixture rich or lean and thought that might explain things. You know for us land creatures that want to fly one day, but just dont have the means at the moment haha.

    Do I am 13 and my friend (adult) took me up in his Stearman. He knew I have previous tailwheel time, so he let me do the takeoff, I did the rudder, stick, throttle, everything. One we got in the air I said, "where can we go?" "your controls bud! Go where ever you want!" he said. So I flew and did a couple probably illegal low passes over my friends house and beach, but we had a blast. He had me do a flyby at the airport at 130 mph, 40 feet above the ground! There us other stuff I cannot tell you but I'll tell you one thing, it was awesome!

    Great video as always. man those trees looked close (but as usual bet they weren't!). Did my BFR last about 10 days ago. Did 0.95 minutes and passed it. My BCat still can't believe I've only logged 9 hours since 2003 and yet fly so well. (I can't believe it either but I think your videos helped plus I've been reading all my old training notes). Next is some general flying just to get back in the "groove" and then................onto the Super Cub!

    I knew two cfi s that taught pilots in ww2 and they were experts with a Stearman. That being said both of them agreed “ a Stearman is a little difficult to take off , a dream to fly , and a bitch to land “. When on finale about 100 yards from the runway pull the trim back one notch it changes the profile of the aircraft and makes for a sweet landing, then ALWAYS keep the stick back .

    My family owns a PT-17 Stearman and I have soloed in it, 16. On pavement landings, never done a grass one, I try to keep the tail up as long as I can so I can see more. I bet when you sit in the back you will understand what I am talking about. Your progress is great and maybe we can fly Stearman formation one day!

    funny thing... I was doing the exact same thing for the first couple landings in the RV6... if I managed to get the mains on the ground and not bouncing or going around, I immediately switched to "keep it on the centerline" mode, and would leave a little power on longer than needed.

    I remember being struck by how completely different a Stearman felt from any other aircraft I'd flown up to that point... even a Citabria. Especially noticeable on short final! Two hours wasn't nearly enough to acclimate. Yep, I'll have to head to Hamilton...

    Mate, those graphics are so cool, but they also gave me an idea. You should call the Mythbusters guys and see if they want to do an aviation themed episode! And you and Jamie could have a "facial-hair-off". Final season ever of Mythbusters, maybe you will get to blow up a Messerschmitt! OK don't do that. I like Messerschmitts.

    I've never flown a Stearman, so I don't know what the control loads are like, but it looked as though you were gripping the stick like an axe-handle. Finger-and-thumb pressure is usually all that's required. Then the nerves in the hand can tell you what the aeroplane's saying, not the pressures your forearm's exerting.

      +avro549B Sure, I could probably stand to be a little lighter on the grip; but ain't no finger / thumb pressure gonna cut it in an airplane this big, with stick that requires as much movement as this one does at times.

    The problem with tour theory on looking thru window is, when in backseat it changes. Ive got lots of stearman time, look straight and use your perifreal

      +2QOOL808 I think we're saying the same thing. I'm using peripheral, while ignoring the central field of view, which isn't much (although admittedly more than you you can see from the back). But yes, I've recently been checked out in the back seat, and was able to do it using the same technique.

      Lol. Another issue I have is when "S" turning to taxi, my front seat passengers lean their head way out to look. I cant see!!! So I end up making exagerated S turns........ Ugg. Lol

    Nice landings. 70 knots on approach is exactly right for a normal pavement landing. The Stearman has no issue soaking up firm landings so I wouldn't feel too bad about pounding it on in the last one. Besides... it wasn't that firm if it didn't bounce.

    Interesting thing about developing good peripheral vision, not just when in tail draggers, but with night landings also, almost identical landing techniques, look far ahead, dont focus on the runway in front of you, and judge your flare height by the runway side lights in you peripheral vision. now where is Dustin?

      Peripheral vision is an interesting topic, with differing opinions. For example Budd Davisson is on the other side of the debate because of the overall reduced vision in your periphery. As I recall from his seminars, he advocates a more active scan back & forth... almost like IFR but outside the cockpit.

Anytime I lose focus and look around while landing, I tend to smash the ground before expected, or flare too high and drop it on from several feet. But if I stay focused with my gaze straight ahead, I can grease it most of the time.

    Hey flightchops! No surprise here, just another amazing and educational video. I'm a 14 year old living not to far from where you operate (right in Brampton), and I've been passionate about aviation ever since I was 6. I am starting to look into getting my PPL. One question I have is what software do you use for flight planning/during you flights? Things like weather and whatnot. I've been curious about this for a while, and I would appreciate a reply. You videos have always captivated me, and the fact that you operate around the GTA is an added bonus! Thanks a lot!

      +Nathan Chetram Very cool! I use ForeFlight all the way! I can't recommend it enough (and that is not just because they are a sponsor - I used the product for several years before hand) But you do need to learn old school methods for gathering the info as well.

    How did Destin (sp) do with his private cert? Did he do a video about it on his channel? I like his video content but I have'nt check him out in a while. I will. His flying lessons and science background would make a perfect video on basic aerodynamics. Doesn't he have an aeronautical engineering background? It's now almost May 2018.

    I am sure it is your "secret sauce", but I currently run a gopro in the cockpit through my flight training and debrief as well, however, I do not have near the amount of views you do. Would you consider posting a setup of your cameras? Maybe a walkthrough video??

      +FlightChops , Hi , I posted last year I think about my 20 years owning two Stearmans. I enjoy anytime I can see one flying, because I know it won't be long 'til they're almost all gone. Any how, I see you're doing great as a Stearman pilot, as long as you don't fall asleep at the controls. It seems you have good control, and I'll tell you one thing, If you can do it from the front cockpit, you'll have no trouble from the rear seat. I know you'll ace it when the time comes. Flying in the winter was pretty rare, because we had the Stearman in the rear corner of the hanger. Every once in a while, would the hanger empty out and I'd have a chance to shake the dust off her wings. The only thing was you would have to bundle up like an Eskimo to stay warm in those frigid skies. Keep the Stearman vidios coming and good luck with your solo. Bob U.

      +tinlizzie37 Just another comment, When we got our first Stearman,( Jan 1965), the airspeed indicator didn't work. My one partner and both checked out in it before it was fixed. We learned to fly the Stearman by attitude and not airspeed. It works out for every aircraft. Find an attitude where it glides a tad above stall and bring her close to the ground and flair.       +Cemore Buts (Wood429) Originally they did not. Dennis added a radio to his, but he did it very elegantly as not to change the cockpit much - it is in the rear cockpit which you'll see when I share the video about the back seat check out. If you watch the video n my channel called "Warbird primary training - STALL recognition - SHORT field LANDING - STEARMAN Flying" Dennis talks about the original "intercom" they had (which was not electronic) - I'd put the link here, but TH-cam often spam filters comments with links - so I gave up :)
