    Frampton was a struggling artist when the live double album, Frampton Comes Alive, was released and exploded him into stardom. It's one of the most unlikely success stories imaginable as he'd released 4 studio records prior to this that achieved very modest sales. This live album was on the Billboard charts for 4 months before it hit number one but then stayed there for a staggering total of 10 weeks. All 3 singles from the record made the top 15 including this song. It was the best selling album of 1976.

    • @iambecomepaul
      @iambecomepaul 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yeh, it was sort of weird. Frampton was obviously talented and a wonderful guitarist. That’s not really the debate. The wonderment came when he broke out. It was just a moment in time. He caught a wave. It was just a “thing.” For a while, Frampton just caught fire. Now? It’s hard to think about the mid 70s without thinking about Frampton.

    Peter Frampton was famous for utilizing what was called a "Talk Box." Roger Troutman used the same thing. It was a tube hooked up to a small speaker inside a box. The guitar plays thru that speaker. With the tube in his mouth, next to a mic, whatever shape his mouth made, it would reflect the sound going into the mic like singing. It was a really cool effect at the time, but it was already done in the 50s on a lap steel guitar.

  • @sisterdebmac
    @sisterdebmac 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The way the talk box works, basically, is that it synthesizes the voice and guitar together. The trick is you have to sing the same note you're playing on your guitar. It's a very specific skill. That's why the audience gets so excited when he starts soloing with it.

    Peter Frampton is using a device called a "talk box". It is a device that is hooked up to the microphone and an electrified musical instrument, to help distort the voice when the person is singing. It has been around since at least the 1950s. Country music steel guitarist Pete Drake used one in the early-1960s. Joe Walsh used a talk box on one of his solo recordings. Jeff Beck has used one before, and Motley Crue used one for their song, "Kickstart My Heart". There is a Peter Frampton TV performance on "The Midnight Special" on NBC in 1975, where Frampton is seen using a talk box on stage for this song.

    Sadly I wasn't born till 1977 and it would be few more years before I could fully appreciate Frampton, but my favorite memory of this song was just the pure joy on my parents, aunts, n uncles faces when introducing this band/passing this song on to the next generation. I still see their faces every time I here it, and it's like hearing it for the first time every time. Gosh, I'm 45 now, my parents are climbing up in their 60's, and now I'm catching the joy of watching people discover their them for the first time. I can see why they loved sharing it with us so much.💜
    You have to see it live, btw. I never fully understood what he was doing till I saw it in action. Makes the song even amazing! I promise.

    The day of my mom's funeral was a sad and somber occasion. 500 of her family, friends and co-workers filled the pews and aisles. A standing room only sendoff for a very much loved, respected and beautiful Italian woman. During a keyboard solo in the middle of a hymn, with tears streaming down my cheeks, I turned completely around to face my cousin. In my best British accent I blurted out, "Bob Mayo on the key boooards....Bob Mayo"
    That section, all Peter Frampton fans erupted in laughter. Even after 15 years have passed, people thank me for bringing some laughter into a sad room.
    Laughter, simply the best medicine ever!
