Well, "this guy" was worried about the mechanics of his car, and appears to have a good sense of mechanical stresses on hardware. You can see him cringe as he hears the mechanics grind and as such he even cancels the first atempt. he probably went to check off video? so although he may push the car's limits or test them, he seems aware of the mechanical "soul" of the car.

This kills the transmission
Ford C4 and C6 and GM THM350 will not engage reverse when driving at road speed. I've done this with all 3 back in the day. However, I never slowed to a stop with one in reverse. I would assume that they would engage into 1st gear at some time before the vehicle stopped, with obvious negative effects.
Newer electronically shifted transmissions are programmed to prevent engagement if you do this.

I hit reverse by accident in a turbo 350 and it did engage reverse and destroyed my governor but the trans survived
it's not that the technology isn't great, it isn't there at all. older cars don't have computers that control what gear you're in, older automatic transmissions have a hydraulic system that changes the gear once enough pressure builds up. pressure builds while you drive which drive a pully that changes gear. so if you're cruising at 2,000 RPM then pressure builds slow and it takes longer to shift which is ok because you don't really want to shift at 2,000 but if you're at like 5000k RPM then the pressure builds up faster and changes the gear faster. so since it's all pulleys there aren't any computer that say "no you can't shift gears right now." you can do whatever you want.

It pretty much impossible to put a manual in reverse while moving forward. The gears just grind and never mesh.
It is possible, I tried it once out of curiosity at around 25mph (without releasing the clutch) and it took a few seconds but the gear stick went in and the backup camera went on

you are right on the noise while in park, now in reverse, it's either the computer put the tuck in neutral but the truck didn't shift after you stopped so most likely the clutch was engaged while going forwards until you stopped and pressed on the gas again

ive done it with my mercedes GL and it only goes into neutral if you try shifting to reverse. If you shift into park it says something like shift into park at a stop or something like that and it doesn't let you it stays in drive.

I put my mother's Mazda into park when I was going like 3 mph and it wasn't fun.
Mark Herbert well the car locked up and just skidded to a halt in a very short distance. That kind of launched me forward until the seat belts locked.

SDav21 no, if someone were to do this, "put it in reverse/park when the vehicle is driving forward" and let's say your car flipped out and crashed, and you got injured, let's say this happened to me, I would then tell the people that "this bald guy on youtube told me to do it." And they watch the video, Mike would get introuble for not saying, don't try this at home.

You might have cracked the parking pole, made metal shaving (which hopefully will be caught by the magnet and filter) and put lots of stress on some components.
As for the reverse, I am actually not surprised by the results, as the shifting is electronics. It would be very easy to actually put "if car is moving at more than X then do not shift to reverse". This safety take little code space and actually improve safety, both for mechanical protection and also to prevent crash due to everything that explode followed by a loss of control and a crash. I would not be surprised if it was actually a requirement for the DOT, hidden somewhere in the thousands of pages.

Hehe ... 1995 Chevrolet S10 didn't exactly do what Mike's truck did when my knee it the shifter on accident. Stalled, screeched, shook, and stopped were the experiences I had whilst doing this (on accident). Love the videos, Mike. Keep it up! :)

Garret yes do it on a Ford with the AOD , not the aode or newer because those generations (aode and above) have electrical input. The aod is cable shifted and uses just a TV valve /cable to control line pressure for firmness of shifts and when to shift up/down
It's not fun. Source: watched a guy leave most of his pride-n-joy Civic's (nothing crazy special, but a well done NA motor and good suspension without a bunch of shoddy bodywork or a fart cannon) auto all over the road trying to manually shift it.

Crown Victoria fun... At 40 mph shift to neutral and apply throttle, then into reverse. You get a forward motion reverse burnout, truly awesome. Did this in my leased taxi when my company owner refused to replace the bad axle, I tried to break it but it just kept doing awesome reverse burnouts.

Jay Win Exactly never buy a previously leased car , a ex company car, coo car or rental car. I did buy the same model of suv used by cops though, figured if it can withstand the beating cops give them, it should be ultra reliable when babied.
Puff the Magic Dragon leased cars are not treated any worse than regular cars. You're not any less liable for damage in a lease than you are in a car you bought. In fact, I'd say they're treated better because you have to turn them back in, and they nickel and dime you for any little problem. A car you buy will never come under that kind of scrutiny.

It probably came on because that switch was turned on with the lever being in reverse position but thank God for the safety mechanism technology
