I’ve been sewing for many years and still found your hints and tips very useful- especially measuring the length of the binding. Thank you Noreen 😁 You explain beautifully
I too have started basting my neckbands on before serging. It's so much easier to remove if it doesn't fit properly. Great info about the front of the neckband!!!
I really like the idea of using the folded side of the neckband to check if the band is the right length. Your teaching method is very clear and understandable. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you Noreen 🥰 for such a wonderful presentation for all of us who dislike neckband sewing. Now we can dive in and get it right! I have your exact machine and happy to see the settings you used for basting on the neckband and stretching it differently than before. I will also baste BEFORE I serge it on! Thanks so much! I have many Love Notions patterns as well.
I am about to tackle a LN pattern and came to find some tutorials. This is just the most helpful and informative video ive watched over the years. Your presence on camera is so lovely. Thank you from Australia
Wonderful instructional video. This was a new concept for me to do neckbands this way. Noreen is wonderful presenter for fitting. I hope she will do more fit techniques!
I struggle so much with neckbands, so thank you for these great tips! I’ve been marking eighth-points to more evenly stretch but that’s kind of a pain, so I like the way you clip it between the quarters when it’s on your machine.
Yesterday afternoon I set aside the top I am making. The neckband was the final piece and I couldn't decide whether to make a fold-over band (my first choice), or the version you made. This video was perfect because I believe I'll end up with a nice flat neckline, with hopefully no seam-ripping. Thank you!
I always sew with the band on top. That way, you can see the area of the neck you need to stretch across to get the band to fit. Also, it allows you to have a flat neckline to work over. Once you've sewn enough neckbands with a variety of knit fabrics, you figure out the need for treating each type separately as far as the length of the neckband goes. It took me several years to figure this out. Having videos like this sure helps speed up the learning process when it comes to sewing with knits. If you use actual ribbing instead of self fabric, that is another type of knit to figure out. I sewed a neckband into a nightie yesterday where I used the pattern piece instead of cutting a strip from selvage to selvage. It turned out a bit "gathered", but it's a nightie so I let it go. As I worked with the neckline, basting it in, pressing with steam to whip it back into shape, serging the edge of the neckband and topstitching it, the ribbing relaxed a bit so it will work fine. I don't use a walking foot when sewing in the neckband. It's not necessary. I've never had the initial seamline "break" a thread as I sew it in with a 3.0 mm stitch length. This includes the topstitching. I've sewn on all kinds of knits such as cotton interlock, jersey, rayon/stretch (lycra or spandex), ITY, Ponte and 95% cotton/5% stretch (lycra or spandex). Never a problem in the neckband with multiple wash and wear. Thank you for taking the time to share your discovery in handling different knit neckbands as well as all of your tips and tricks. So many will benefit from this video.
This is brilliant, I will try this method out. Thank you for being so clear in your video. I love the idea of the folded edge to the raw edge to test the fit before sewing.
Such really useful tips - thank you. The folded edge to raw edge measure is inspired! I’ve definitely found that taking the time to check and baste before sewing is so worth it. I need to find your v neck tips vlog now! 😀
This was such a good video. Even though I have sewn quite a few t-shirts, I still learnt some things. I will definitely try the folded edge technique for measuring the length of the band. Thank you - so clearly explained.
This is perfect timing for me personally. I just asked in the FB group how to adjust the neckband to an adjusted neckline. Your instruction is perfectly explained and I will be using your technique. Thanks a bunch!! 😊
Hi Noreen! Wow, your video is so helpful. Thank you for mentioning that you normally fit the neckband to the shirt on a flat surface as I don't have a dress form, yet. You're a fantastic teacher! I look forward to more of your Technique Tuesday videos and I'll have to see if you have your own YT channel. Thank you so much!!!
Wow! This all makes good sense after your experience and careful thought. Excellent camera position as you did the sewing! Good explantation right through the final topstitching! So impressive. That’s experience for ya!
Thank you, Noreen. Great tips, well explained and well demonstrated. Your video on sewing v-neck bands is my 'go to' and now this one will be my reference for round neck bands. Thank you again.
Thanks Noreen. Great video. I watched your video on v-neckbands and use your technique for any v-neck style I make now. I will now use this technique on round neckbands. Take care.
I’m glad you liked it! To do it flat I usually fold my shirt in half matching center front, shoulder seams and the center back. That way you get an entire front to back section to check your band on. Then just hold the band at the center front folded side up and stretch it around just the same as I’m doing it in the video 😊
I enjoyed this tutorial immensely, but before I assume anything, do you do both sides from the front? Or do you cut off the same amount from the opposite side? Or is the one cut enough for the entire band? thanks
Thank you for a marvelous tutorial. I feel like I'm in the room with you! When you mention your long basting stitch, is it still a zigzag stitch? What width and length do you use? Or, if it's a straight stitch, what length do you prefer? Thanks so much!
Glad you enjoyed it! I think it would be more difficult on a coverstitch, as you can't rotate easily and would probably need to use your sewing machine for the X at the bottom of the placket anyway. But maybe if you only had one needle in? 🤔 ~J
I really like Noreen as a presenter doing fit segments. Hope you will feature her often. Thank you.❤

Excellent going to try new method. I always use a cotton spandex to make my T-shirts so I will try this method.

Loved the video! Is there any way you could shoot a quick tutorial on how you do this flat?
I’m glad you liked it! To do it flat I usually fold my shirt in half matching center front, shoulder seams and the center back. That way you get an entire front to back section to check your band on. Then just hold the band at the center front folded side up and stretch it around just the same as I’m doing it in the video 😊

You're very welcome, happy sewing! ~J
I enjoyed this tutorial immensely, but before I assume anything, do you do both sides from the front? Or do you cut off the same amount from the opposite side? Or is the one cut enough for the entire band? thanks
Thank you! I cut the same amount from each side.
Thank you for a marvelous tutorial. I feel like I'm in the room with you! When you mention your long basting stitch, is it still a zigzag stitch? What width and length do you use? Or, if it's a straight stitch, what length do you prefer? Thanks so much!
Thanks! It’s just a long straight stitch. Anything easy to pull out later if needed 😊
Genius.
She really is! ❤️❤️Thanks for watching! ~J
Very helpful tips. Thank you for sharing.
Yay! Thanks for watching! ~J
So great! One question : when using twin needle do both needles pierce the shirt, or one on the shirt and the other on the band?
I've done it both ways but prefer both on the shirt. But I'm not sure which way Noreen prefers, I will ask her! 😊 ~J
Thankyou for the great video. Would it be appropriate to topstitch using a coverstitch?
Glad you enjoyed it! I think it would be more difficult on a coverstitch, as you can't rotate easily and would probably need to use your sewing machine for the X at the bottom of the placket anyway. But maybe if you only had one needle in? 🤔 ~J
Helpful, easy to follow video. Im curious what Janome model you are using. Great walking foot.
Good question! I will ask. 😊 ~J
Thanks @emilyjohnston8703! It’s a Janome Memory craft 6700P and that is their Accufeed system. 😊
