  • Found this the other day. It's probably from 1983 Sorry the quality is crap It was shot with an old Sharp video camera I had, and in those days the recorder was a separate box altogether with a battery belt to power it all
It shows a trip around Portsmouth Harbour I went on all those years ago. Note the older looking hovercraft, HMS Vernon, the old Sealink ferries and many other things now gone or replaced.
I may post more of this video latter?

Another building remaining from HMS Vernon is No 21 Building (Vulvan I think) I started my career in art in that building Nov 5th 1956 working as a technical illustrator. Many happy memories! Anyone else remember those times in that building?

Given this is 1983, the Warrior is still in Hartlepool (the town that restored her).

I was based at HMS Vernon while you were filming this in 83. We used to refer to the tiurist boats that went past as fanny boats. A whole lifetime away, now live in Australia.

Always enjoy seeing views of Portsmouth (served on HMS Blake helicopter cruiser 1976 only 17 then) and still would like to move back there.Think Portsmouths improvements (still room for improvement) good to see

Ha it's interesting to see. Some things are the same and some things are so different. The Butcher Blue Boats are there working the harbour. No Gunwharf, no Spinnaker Tower but HMS Vernon instead. I just about remember this from when I was about 6 years old. No HMS Warrior and instead of Type 45 and 42's and Type 23's there are older Naval Ships. Great Stuff!!!

I have done this a million times whilst in the Navy, but never got to see it as I was always inside the ship nursing the engines. This is really good to see, and how its the same, but also very different.

I was in Portsmouth. So was Charles Dickens and one of the two out of Tears for Fears.

Wasn't there a nudist beach near the sallyport? or was that just wishful thinking by the matlot's?

I know it has been few years since you posted this video, but did you ever get round to digitizing the the rest of the film and if so post it to TH-cam? I think there are people who would love to see more footage of the dockyard if you have it.

I wonder if anyone could help me I have this diary that I was given about a young man 1st of Jan 1940 taking up his duties with the senior service. I would love to return it to his family. On the 1st of Jan on the first page of his diary he said that "The first night as an officer of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, the first night in the H.M.S. Vernon and standing on the threshold of the most important, difficult & dangerous that confronts England at the present time the war against the Germans".
