This brings back so many memories back in the 80s when I was young when we were going to visit my nan and grandad in Finglas, Dublin.... We loved the journey through the night from Essex all the way to holyhead and remember the excitement once we arrived in the holyhead ferry terminal car park.... There use to be a canteen which I think was orange in colour which was the colour era at the time.... Then the added excitement getting onto St Columba...i always remember the Duty Free shop as my parents always purchased cigarettes and bottles of jameson whiskey for the aunties and uncles... I also remember the aluminium looking stairs and as daft as it sounds St Columba had a distinctive smell..... Not horrible.... But memorable... I miss those days so much but pleased that I got the chance to sail on her many many times.... 👍

The sound of those shutters rolling up, the clanking of the duty-free & 200 Major. A game of Cee-lo in the Lansdowne Road bar with a few pints of plain & of course the smell of turf in the air as we pulled into Dun Laoghaire. Priceless memories.

No turf in Dun Laoghaire, you must have been on the weed

It was coal and compressed peat. You could smell it several out to sea

Absolutely loved this video. The music the feel of it the 80's footage. A gem of a video. A pleasure to come across. I showed my two young kids this video just now to show them a ship in the olden years. Really enjoyed this video. I'm from limerick.

The sound of all those bottles of spirits in the duty free when the sea was rough, not before climbing the flights of stairs to reach it. Good memories going to Ireland.

Very nostalgic. I travelled on her when she had become Stena Hibernia. She had been refitted internally beyond recognition and it didn't go down well with regular users of the service I understood.
She was indeed a very capacious ship and in those days the Holyhead/Dun Loaghaire crossing was part of a busy rail/sea route from London to Dublin. It's all gone now sadly. How times change. Loved seeing the Ford Sierra too. My dad had a blue one. And the boy and girl in the film looked rather like me and my sister at that age. Typical 80s hairstyles and clothes.

The journey home at Christmas aboard the St. Columba was a great craic with beer flowing and toilets a flooded it certainly was an experience.

Thanks for sharing this . I actually travelled on her four times. Firstly in 1979 when mum, dad, my sister and I travelled over from Leicestershire to visit family in Galway coming back a fortnight later. The 2nd time was in 1991 when she had been renamed the Hibernia and mum and I travelled to and from Dun Laoghaire as foot passengers. A lovely ship, this video brings back a number of memories.

Just to add, the good old days when the ships berthed right next to the trains at Holyhead, and foot passengers had a simple and short walk to transfer between train and ship. Nowadays I believe the ferry berths at Holyhead are almost right out by the breakwater and any foot passengers are transferred by bus. Also Carlisle Pier in Dun Laoghaire is no longer with us, I'm old enough to remember the trains there too before that line was closed in 1980.

Mark Davies same here. At the time it didn’t feel like a proper holiday going to visit family in Ireland but looking back I really miss those days. Never wanted to go but always ended up holding back tears every time I left to come home.

So sad to hear the old girl is to be broken up on the beach in Alang. If there's a Valhalla for ships, the St Columba will surely be there. Great memories!

Actor T.P. McKenna doing the narration. Speed of the video is too slow though. Probably a 48khz dubbed down to 44khz without being properly converted. There's another version of this on TH-cam that's much better.
