In my 97 Volvo 850 non-turbo found it difficult to remove the radiator from the top as shown in the video. Found it easier to drop the radiator and remove from below as long as car was on stands or on ramps.

Thank you for this! I have a 1998 Volvo s70 and I need to replace the radiator and this video gave me the confidence and know how to do that and save a good $400! We had some rough spots, some rust on bolts and there were slight differences between the 850 and s70, not as much room in mine and we had to take it out from the bottom. But, we did it! After all was hooked up we start it and pop! The top oil cooler hose undid it self, it did not come off but out. Interestingly enough when I had a mechanic look at it he said that was leaking and needed to be replaced and due to where it is and we need to take the radiator out to do it it will be more money, etc. But, we plugged it back in and ensured that it was secure and no leak! I also saw you do not need to remove the radiator to do this. Again, thank you!

Like others who have commented from over the years. Your video is excellent. I have UK 98 V70R and was loosing coolant from the radiator. Never done any radiator on a car before and after watching your tutorial a few times. I bit the bullet and replaced the radiator. It was relatively easy and on the street. No jack either. pieces of wood was used to support I would recommend oiling the radiator to car mounts before removal. These are the ones you have to undo from underneath but the thread is, if look before you leap, visible on one side not so on the other. Made sure zip ties were used as well on the PS and oil connectors. All is now good. You cant beat old Volvo's.

In LA. Independent quoted $1100 for radiator replacement and thermostat and ETC. After watching this I feel like I could have easily done the job and saved a bunch.

Hi Ben, Thanks for another informative video. I just replaced my radiator on my 96' 850GLT and discovered that my tranny fluid is much higher now. I know the level was correct prior to the radiator swap. I know that the tranny does send some fluid through the radiator to cool it but why would it be higher? Any ideas?
I didn't see him swap the grommets that are in the radiator's body mount holes(with the 12mm bolts). Is the new radiator suppose to come with new grommets installed? My order didn't.

I had the same experience on a 1994 non-turbo. I also ended up going out and in though the bottom rather than top. Didn't have to jack or lift the car to do this.
What size are the bolts that hold the radiator sandwich together? The four at the top?

Imma average Zo tryna learn, so since the radiator doesn't have a cap does this make for a more efficient way for coolant to move thur the system? Also do other radiator system have transmission and oil lines running thur them?😯😶😕😬😧
could oil somehow get into the cooling system in the radiator if it has a fault where the oil cooler lines and the coolant lines are close?

The oil and transmission cooling tubes are in the end tanks of the radiator, in a bath of coolant. One way to contaminate oil and coolant would be if there was an internal rupture that allowed the two to mix. There are others but let me know if I have answered your question!
shiny intercooler, metal endcaps ftw! (video for that install?) i cant imagine it being a step or 2 more than this one, but i dunno if there was any special things done to make it fit

Botip I asked the same question and learned that my volvo 850 doesn't have a cap, the way the coolant system is assembled is much different.
I need help identifying the skinny plastic hose which goes around the cooling fan with the relay wires. Mine is severed and I don't know the name of the part.
What did you use to lube the oil line connectors? Vaseline or ????
That oil cooler part is only for automatic transmission right? I think for my NA manual V70 this is an even easier job?
Is it necessary to remove the splash shield to access the drain petcock and just drain the coolant?

this video is great helped me r/r my radiator though it failed to mention to remove the fitting from the sides to reuse again. but other than that this was good.
so now ... I've replaced the heater core the radiator and my gauge still indicates that the engine is running hot. Top hose is hot bottom hose is cold/cool. Fan turns on. temp gauge goes up about 3/4th of the way up. does the water pump have anything to do with these symptoms?
JS T yeah if your water pump is original, it may be missing some of the fins on the impeller that push water through the syatem (which was a problem on my old 98 T5)

Just ordered the o-rings and clamps for the transmission and the oil lines from FCP and wanted to know if it's the same procedure removing the radiator for my 1998 automatic S70 T5? Thanks for a great video.
The repair is essentially the same. There may be some boost hoses routed a bit differently but basically the same basic procedure. Hope that helps.

Hi Ben, great video and great FCP. Since there is no video available for Radiator replacement for S80 1999-2006, have a question, Can I take out the radiator out by lifting up (7:20) same as you did of my s80 99 non turbo? any caution to do this job my self.
Major Code Yes, it can be done however dropping it through the bottom is much easier in my opinion.

Ben, I just replaced my lower radiator hose and now i'm having engine overheat problems. Upper hose is mildly warm but overflow tank is not boiling. Stopcock in lower radiator has fluid in it, so I don't think it's obstructed. I've read about air? Anything else? Thanks for your help in advance.
Sounds like an air pocket to me as well. I would remove the expansion tank cap when the engine is completely cold, start it up, and raise the RPM's to about 2k and hold it for about 2 mins. This usually does the trick for me.
Pardon my coming late to the party but: the '98 S70 I have is not a turbo. Should I be looking for a different video?
Hi Ben, on my '99 V70 non-turbo, I snapped the two 12mm bolts that were holding the radiator in place. On the other side of the frame there is some sort of bracket that was holding the fan I believe. I haven't been able to get the bolts out of said brackets. My question is: is it more likely that they're rusted in there or are the designed to stay in those brackets?

at 6:00 removing 12mm bolts.. mine won't unthread.. on both sides.. You can see the other side of them from under the hood.. my guess is bolt threads are rusted. Were pain to loosen then finally did, was unscrewing them still pretty difficult, then all of a sudden nothing. they move freely left and right, not getting more loose or more tight. Whats my next procedure?

I have a 98 V70 XC. You pulled the radiator out from the top. Can I do the same?
Everything I have seen says I have to remove it from the bottom.
It'll come out either way. The reason why most repair information says from the bottom is because they assume it's being done on the lift. Clearance will be an issue either way and you'll have to remove the fan shroud.
Ben what are you using to "cap" off the lower oil and trans. fluid nipples? I see a black rubber cap. Where are you getting these, please.

Do 2001 Volvo S80 2.9's require cooling system flushes or only a simple drain and refill? I can't find this information anywhere.
A simple drain and fill at the radiator won't remove all of the coolant and sediment from the entire system so I always recommend a complete flush. There are also some additive's available to condition the system.
FCP Euro Is there a chemical coolant system flushing product that you recommend? I'm vacillating between Prestone Superflush and CRC 10-Minute Radiator Flush. Thanks.
Great video, replaced my leaking rad on my 96' 850 turbo with the Nissens replacement from FCP. Only issue is that the intercooler now seems to have lots of play moving forward and back. In the video there seems to be spacers/bumpers that are used (9:08) that aren't there initially (1:30) when you are pulling out the old radiator. Can't find these spacers on FCP were they added for this reason? Thanks again and help or feedback would be appreciated.
Those are actually from an intercooler we installed at the same time, the spacers are there because the new intercooler was significantly larger, though we didn't address the intercooler install in the video.

Cam Proud It really shouldn't wiggle, is everything seated properly? Sometimes a small misalignment can make a world of a difference.

Being that this is a turbo, it would've been helpful to point out which one is the radiator, vs the intercooler. Generally, from the front of the vehicle, only the a/c condenser is visible. Likewise, from the inside, behind the fan & shroud, only the radiator is visible. However, the actual intercooler is hidden, or sandwiched in between the two components. Usually, there's some confusion as to which component cools which fluid, & its routing path to & from the engine.

The procedure in the XC90 is very similar, unfortunately we don't have a video, my apologies.
Thanks Jason, I was told that XC90 radiator has to be replaced from the bottom, but you took it out from the top so probably XC90 not similar to 850. We have the radiator now and going to replace it today,hopefully with no drama.

Update
We replaced it by removing the radiator from the bottom. We kept the fan on it and remove it when radiator was out.
We tied up the condenser and inter-cooler with a rope to the car to hold them up.
It took in total around 90 mins,but yeah I couldn't do it myself, it requires a lot of strength.

Hi Debbie, It's basically the same process, the only difference is the non-turbo doesn't have the engine oil cooler lines which, makes things a little easier.

What kind of lubricant is being applied to the transmission & oil cooler connections?
It is being put on with a black brush and appears to be a clear gel. Is it silicone?
I don't remember exactly what it was, but I believe it was just a silicone gel.

No. Fill when the car is off. I really can't see it damaging anything but I've never done it this way and I've never seen the fill method directed this way either.
nvm my car is ruined... leak in the cylinder... i keep gettin this goozzy water in the coolant system... probably exhaust / water mix? its like white cream. smells exhaust

I think it's way easier to pull out all three of them and replace one, two or more of those components.

Hi Ben... Would white Lithium grease be acceptable as a a lubricant?
Charles Kennedy I'd recommend either a synthetic non petroleum based grease or even transmission fluid will do.
Charles Kennedy KY jelly (serious) water based and super slick. It's helped me get bushings in quite a bit where fitting tolerances are incredibly tight.
Nothing like a KJ Jelly recommendation from Arnie to bring a smile to my face! So funny!
I got the radiator in, but will keep the KY Jelly tip in mind for the next time I have to get a tight hose on.

I have a 98 T5 manual and noticed my coolant in the bowl was cream coffee colored. No temperature issues and no codes. I'm thinking the radiator has ruptured but it's not leaking.
Next day, I have to drive 30 miles and after about five miles coolant light comes on. I'd have to refill the bowl more the faster I went, and less on the back roads. About every eight miles on average. Again, no temperature gauge indication of any overheating. I reach home, turn off the car and nothing is leaking (although once during a refill with the car idling, I notice leaks coming from the back bottom of the car).
When I get ready to replace the radiator and drain the petcock-- all coolant is green (and new) until the last few drops then a few drops of oil. When I remove the bottom rad hose mostly green but more oil--all cream coffee colored.
I'm wondering if it's the radiator, the lines, or a combo. I'm not thinking head gasket. Thoughts?
Also, notice my radiator has only two lines on the passenger side that clamp on with those god-forsaken clamps that cost $30 each at the dealership. Can't find a replacement radiator that doesn't have four--one in each corner. How will this make a difference?
