These paint schemes were fairly simple, and to me, they epitomize what a race car should look like! Beautiful cars!

Don't forget that most paint schemes from this era represent products from companies you might use in your daily life. Beer, clothes, chewing tobacco (smoking tobacco was banned by Winston), detergent, car parts, car-related products, department stores...

Just to point out to younger fans or new fans, Rockingham's Cup events were 500 miles/492 laps long until the mid-90's. Afterwards like Dover, at the same time the distance was reduced to a pair of 400 mile/393 lap events. No rookie ever won at Rockingham, but three guys did manage to nab their first or for one driver, their ONLY win at Rockingham. Mark Martin won his first of 40 in 1989, Ward Burton his first of five in 1995 (his sophomore year), and Johnny Benson in 2002 got his ONLY Cup win.

And they were some of the toughest races all season at 500 miles. Over 4 hours and a battle of attrition.

@@TracksideViews And only a few of those 500-mile marathons at Dover were run after the surface switched from asphalt to concrete. Rockingham has always been asphalt. In my opinion, running 500 miles at Dover on concrete is less straining than asphalt, but you are still pulling a ton of G's.

Even the Pocono 500-mile races were damn tough. I've been watching all Cup broadcasts available on TH-cam in chronological order and I think I haven't seen a race lap there under a minute (150mph or faster)!

I'm tell'n y'all, I don't care what Chocolate Meyers repeatedly tries to tell everyone on his Nascar radio show every damn day, No Chocolate! The racing is NOT better now then it was back in the day! This is REAL RAW RACING here, not the bunched up racing that's "artificially manufactured" these days! Lucky dog lap's back & Stage racing makes me wanna 👎🤮
I mean no disrespect to Chocolate, he seems to be a truly great guy, & I guess him always telling us that is just a case of him knowing where his bread gets buttered & we all know how much Choc likes to eat! 😏

In 1987, ALL Cup races were broadcasted
      · 21 races got full broadcasts while 8 got long summaries (1-hour slots, sometimes longer) or partial broadcasts --- For whatever reason, Martinsville and Pocono had 2 dates each but no full broadcast.
I've been watching all NASCAR Cup races available on TH-cam in chronological order and tracks like North Carolina, Dover, Pocono and Martinsville rarely got proper live broadcasts but things were very inconsistent. Martinsville only got 1 in 1981, Pocono got both in 1984 and 1985 but nothing in 1986, Rockingham only had a couple up to this point...

**FACTS BEFORE the 1987 CAROLINA 500**
    · Dale Earnhardt comfortably won the 1987 title thanks to great consistency combined by bad luck of his main competitors Darrell Waltrip and Tim Richmond. Meanwhile, Alan Kulwicki was the best rookie by quite some margin despite his budget being way smaller than his main rival Michael Waltrip.
    · NASCAR decided to not end the season with a road course race, making the Dixie 500 the final race of the season.
    · Darrell Waltrip went to a new Hendrick Motorsports car (GM #17), Terry Labonte got DW’s old car (GM #11), Sterling Marlin got Terry’s old ride (GM #44), Cale Yarborough became an owner-driver (GM #29), Morgan Shepherd got Ruttman’s seat (GM #26), Kyle Petty switched numbers but not team (Ford #21) and so did Alan Kulwicki (Ford #7).
    · The early stages of the race were a matter of Elliot vs Baker vs Bodine while several mechanical DNFs took mostly low-level entries plus also AJ Foyt (last), Rusty Wallace (41st) and Kyle Petty (35th)
    · Despite the race having 3 stints with green flag pitstops, a total of 11 cars finished on the lead lap and there were no DNFs due to crashes somehow. In the longer runs, Ken Schrader (Ford #90) often contended for the lead.
    · In the end, Geoff Bodine (GM #5) tried to make his fuel tank last for a bit over 100 miles but fell short by 3 laps. Of the cars that stopped for fuel naturally, Bill Elliott was the best and won after managing a narrow gap built precisely during the pitstop with Benny Parsons (GM #35, Tim Richmond’s car), Richard Petty (GM #43), Buddy Baker (GM #88) and Dale Earnhardt (GM #3) completing the top5. The other lead lap cars were Bobby Allison (GM #22), Ken Schrader, Darrell Waltrip (GM #17), Ricky Rudd (Ford #15), Cale Yarborough (GM #29) and a surprising Phil Parsons (GM #55).
    · Bodine finished 14th, best rookie of 1986 Alan Kulwicki (Ford #7) was 15th, Terry Labonte (GM #11) was 18th and Harry Gant (GM #33) retired due to transmission problems and got 31st.
