Hello Alex, I love your Auto reviews. I just purchased a Buick Encore GX ST in the Essence trim in FWD with the 1.3L Turbo. I am loving this vehicle. It’s a comfy, smooth and snappy little SUV. I really appreciate you auto reviews...Great Job!!!
We are looking at this to replace our 2013 Crosstrek -- which is underpowered. We are looking at the Select trim with the 1.3L. Still like it? Is it quiet on the highway? How is the power?
Remember Alex, I commented on your previous Encore review, if Buick made it a little wider and longer, this vehicle would be among the perfects in it's class. Well see now?? I think Buick guys are secretly reading the comments on the top TH-cam car reviews channels.
Had a chance to look one over at the New England International Auto Show and I walked away fairly impressed. It balanced good interior quality, strong practicality, comfortable and convenient amenities and a competitive projected sticker price with an economical and supposedly peppy power plant, a good size and fit, and all within a very competitive segment. I don’t know whether we’ll trade up, but of all the vehicles in the subcompact and compact segments, it’s oddly the Tucson and this upcoming Encore GX that are drawing the right balance for our needs. I guess time will tell.
Yeah me too I've been looking at buicks but after having replaced my pistons with a first gen motor in my 16 Cruze I'll never buy a first Gen GM anything.
George L I did a little digging. It’s being made in a GM factory in Mexico. Through and through General Motors. I pity the poor souls who decide to buy one of them. It’ll be disastrous
Both of these engines are drastically underpowered. The 150 hp engine should be the base and the optional should be at least 190 for this size vehicle. Worrying trend for GM that seems to have started with putting a NA 4 cylinder in the ginormous Blazer
I have never understood the need or high hp cars. Yes, I am 76 years old but I have not always been this old. Most of my life I have driven 4cyl cars and trucks and even sports cars one that I had for 49 1/2 years until 2 years ago. he only car that I had that was reasonably fast was 1997 Olds Aurora that my wife bought.
@@ronsteltz7538 I wouldn't call 150-190hp high-powered...just class-competitive. That's what other manufacturers get out of the small turbocharged 4 cylinders they put in these size vehicles.
Surprised only 1 commenter has picked up on the 3 cylinder engines. And of quite small displacement. It will be very interesting to see what the fuel economy is. Hopefully over 40MPG
@MotorcycleMan Not everyone wants a hemi or values 0-60 and quarter mile numbers over all else. And I promise to stay out of the left lane unless I'm passing.

No, stop with this future bullshit. It's not the future unless you accept it as the future. If nobody will buy this crap, they will cut it out. Also, don't vote for stupid Democrats and their moronic CAFE regulations.
@@weedmastersr I mean, CAFE regulations are one way to reduce carbon emissions. If you don't think combustion engines are bad for us, just lock yourself in a garage with a running engine and find out what happens.
Yeah, I mean I guess they're powerful enough. I feel like if someone were to complain about their engine being only 3 cylinders, then they're not the target customer for an Encore anyway.
Glad to hear you don't have to get the CVT... even if that means you have to upgrade to AWD. Then again, if you buy an SUV without AWD that's your own fault, really...

CVTs tend to be at their worst when they need to handle frequent inclines and declines or need constant passing and cruising power. Having them juggle all of their ratios is a lethargic exercise in futility, but if you’re pegged at 40, 60, or 80 MPH the whole way, and you see your engine at 1500 to 2500 RPMs returning 30, almost 40 MPG, then that’s where they make the most sense.
I think it's really handsome, but I don't know if I'd ever buy a 3cyl car. I already worry I drive my Optima with the 2.0 turbo too hard, despite going synthetic from it's first oil change (4 years and no issues so far)
Many companies, including GM, have proven their I3 designs time and time again. From the Germans with MINI and BMW, to the Americans at Ford, plenty of others have succeeded very well with peppy, reliable, smooth I3 engines. GM hasn’t offered many of their low displacement engines in the US until very recently, but if it really is a concern, they’re offering a larger, more powerful engine here too. The Encore will still retain its 1.4L Turbo, and there are others in the lineup with bigger 4’s and 6’s too.
So is this going to replace the Encore eventually? But they're going to keep selling the old one along with this one for 2 more years? I'm a bit confused. The old Encore looks taller and this one looks lower and wider. I've driven the old one before and really liked it because it does give you a higher seating position that most people want and it's narrow and easy to park.
Valor_X Similarly to what VW did with the Tiguan. The current Encore/Trax is made by Opel, which is no longer owned by General Motors. GM will sell both at the same time, for now, at least in the US and Canada. In developing countries, the Trax and Encore are also being replaced with a new Chinese version, similar to this GX, but smaller and more basic.
So now Peugeot is building Buicks? Are they still based on GM-platforms? What platforms will the future GM cars run on? Will GM just become an engineering or marketing company having cars made for them?
It's not -- it is larger and competes with the Envision. The new Chevy Trailblazer is built on the same platform as the Buick Encore GX and will have the same engines.
3 cylinders like it or not is probably the future with stricter emissions. Buick isnt the only one doing this. Heck if the power is decent who cares. It’s not a truck...

They couldn’t come up with a new name for a completely different vehicle? 🤔🙄. C’mon Buick. Is this another Chinese vehicle like the Envision or Korean like the Encore? It seems like Buick has devolved into the American marketing arm of global GM operations (in Asia and formerly in Europe- Opel). Thanks for the coverage, Alex, but is Buick sponsoring your trip?
alliejr It’s a replacement. The Encore was actually a European vehicle (Opel Mokka). While it was assembled on S. Korea and China, it was developed in Germany by Opel. The Encore GX was developed in China and built in S. Korea.
alliejr Good question. It seems GM China developed its replacement on a platform best suited for developing countries (very basic) where even the Opel-designed Trax is a bit too complex and expensive. So... for at least right now, GM will buy Opel’s model and export it into the US and Canada. GM is trying hard not to go bankrupt again. That means world platforms and cheaper production. Most likely GM will produce a more basic Trax for North America on the Encore GX platform and then cancel the Opel models. They’re just not ready yet.
If we’re talking low displacement eco engines, then I3 > I4. Once we start looking into higher performance vehicles though, anything less than a 2.0L I4 with a Turbo or Supercharger will be inadequate for sure. What’s interesting is an I3’s propensity for generating a sound and exhaust note far better than you’d expect. Most four pots are lousy in that regard, but the three bangers are pretty charismatic little engines. In small economy runabouts, it won’t be a big deal.
I had 2015 Encore as lease vehicle. That car needed at least 30 more horses, a better center console and more powerful stereo. From the looks of the new Encore GX they got the center console right. Too bad it has a CVT.👎👎👎

Switch the logo to a Hyundai, Toyota, or anything else and it could very well be so.
That looks very interesting! Unless it’s made in China. Then nope. I can’t deal with a Buick made in China.
Truth. If buy a car made in China it better be half price of a comparable American made car.
It's assembled in South Korea.
Can you deal with cars made in Mexico?
@MotorcycleMan You are probably using a smartphone and computer made in China. Throw them away before it's too late, LOL.
GM, for the love of God, put that cluster in ALL the other Buicks, especially the Regal. The Regal cluster looks cheap and not very premium. I know there should be some value proposition decisions in the interior but don't cheap on the thing the customer HAS to look at.
Looking at the rear end of this GS model reminds me the look of an Opel Astra. I wonder if Buick just lifts the chasis of an Astra and call it as Encore GS instead?
pop up windscreen, what a Joke.I'm sorry. Embarrassement. Not to mention G.M. wont finance a decent 4cyl. out of South Korea where this is made ! So sad.
Yeah a 1.3L 3 cylinder 150 hp Buick CUV really competes with the 220 HP 2.0 BMW X2 or Audi Q3 😏
those are also sold with a 3 cylinder.
I like it, but I like Hyundai Kona Limited more, since it has more pop and a lower price.
I love the Kona! But I like the Kia Seltos better. Hope they send that to the States.
@@canadabear72 Seltos is coming to the LA Auto Show and will be out next year
@@InvestBetter. I heard Kia was going to unveil a new SUV in LA. Just wasn't sure which one it would be. The Seltos has been on sale here in Korea since the summer. It's REALLY nice for a sub compact suv. A bit bigger, higher quality interior and more features compared to the Kona. I think you'll like it!
@@canadabear72 The Seltos is coming......
@@InvestBetter. We've had it here since late Spring. It's a really good vehicle!
GM quality time is over long time ago. Cheap quality cars that breaks down more often. Try Toyota or Honda if you value your money!!!
You put a 3 cylinder in any car in the US market, it better be CHEAP.
Except for hybrids with some other redeeming quality.
Very interesting combination.
Why would Buick say you can't open the hood? SMH
Probably because they have not released the car to the public yet nor to journalists to test it.
I hope this is the new 2021 bolt ev also. It looks like the spy shots, with camo, coverings....
I see lots of Opel design I’m assuming that Buick had this design before GM got rid of Opel I love opens designs and to be honest the Buick’s has more inspiration than the other brands from GM
I believe it was designed by GM Korea and has nothing to do with the former GM brand Opel.
Korea.
George L If it’s a replacement why does the old one soldier on? SMDH. Old GM hasn’t changed for the better at all.
alliejr Good question.
It's an Opel Mokka our and simple.
I hope 3 cyl engines do not become the norm.
102,000 Encores sold in 2019. Stupid customers? Yes. GM just taking advantage of stupidity and doubling down
Wow, that's a lot of no power. I'm surprised that's not the Chinese market engine. A CRV has 40+ more HP and the Volvo has 100 more.
I had 2015 Encore as lease vehicle. That car needed at least 30 more horses, a better center console and more powerful stereo.
From the looks of the new Encore GX they got the center console right.
Too bad it has a CVT.👎👎👎
Wow, that's a sweet Buick!
Feels weird to say that lol
@MotorcycleMan this is being built in South Korea. The Envision is from China
The reason why you couldn't open the hood: Plastic essential parts under the hood (plastic pulley on the alternator, et al.)
