This is the last theater in Chinatown. I used to go to see movie when I was young and also watch the Chinese opera with my mom. This place looks great now! Great job!
Nice story and happy to see they revived and kept the name. It mainly featured Shaw Brothers movies and was operated by the Shaw family in its heyday. Watched countless movies there.
Thank you for reporting on the businesses and history of Chinatown... I loved growing up in Chinatown and even more so love to hear the wonderful changes that are happening. Especially the Street Fair/Market!! I can't wait to visit with my family soon.
I love this place!! I grew up in the Ping Yuen on the same block and would go with my mom and friends every week to watch Chinese movies there. I thought this place closed down. I'm so glad to hear that it has been revitalized and is continuing to thrive. Thank you for reporting on this. I will have to go visit with my family of 6 soon. Such wonderful memories growing up in SF chinatown and coming to Great Star Movie Theater!!
I saw the Empire Strips Back last year and it was one of the best shows I had seen in a while! Absolutely recommend giving it a watch this summer when it comes back.
Wow, I came here with my family to watch movies as a kid. Rats were running on top of the seats, but people didn't care. I'm glad they renovated the place.
Have not been there since they closed in the late 90's. Times were different then, iykyk, and there was a few paranormal stories about this place, especially the bathroom and the back row wall before it was remodeled. If stories are true, would love to hear it from the people that it happened to.
Use to come here alot when I was a kid watching hk movie AND THE MIDNIGHT MOVIE RELEASE YOUNG AND DANGEROUS. AND ALL THE OTHER ONE. THAT WHEN BACK THAN ALL THE CHINATOWN OG UNDERWORLD COME OUT WATCHING MOVIE 🎉
This person of color would go see films here , eat at lucky creations, then go to see bands at the Mab, or On Broadway. Gentrification was non existent in Chinatown back then.
In May 2015, a 31-year-old woman was found dead inside the theater next to Harris Rosenbloom, a promoter for the theater who was leasing the building. He said that he fell asleep in the theater and discovered the woman's body upon waking up. He called 911 at 11:55am. Rosenbloom was initially investigated for murder, but due to a lack of evidence, he was not charged.

this is so cool. best of luck to this couple, so cool of them to bring the place back to life. (Alices mural is awesome)
Awesome contribution to the community. Thank you!
What a great story. Thank you for showing small businesses in San Francisco how they bought back the theater.

Thank you for this story. I loved learning about the history of the theatre and how the couple got together! A wonderful story of love and art.

Auntie, I still go to The Pork Chop House.
Almost 100 years. I didn't know it looks so nice inside.
Wow!! I’m going to bring my family here! So awesome

I visited the theater in the 80s ❤
Kudos!! 🔴🟡
Very interesting and entertaining story.
That's awesome!
We used to go and hang out 50 cents for a double feature of Shaw Brothers kung fu movies. Thanks for saving the last Chinatown theater.
I will come down and do a fantastic aerial of this piece of history.
I am in my mid fifties. My parents use to take us to see movies on their dates. It was the whole family.
Ahhh good times….back in the days of watching double features of HK’s golden era movies and ate at Hon’s Wonton House afterwards at midnight
I would like to support this theater next time I visit the city!

I remember going there and seeing trashy Hong Kong movies. It was great.
It was also the place that launched the 1970s drag troop "The Cockets."
That's incorrect. The Cockettes performed at the Pagoda Palace Theatre at 1731 Powell Street which was demolished in 2013.
Oh? Really? Wow!! 👠
@@RaymondHngthat's what I thought and wonder still if they may have started at Great Star...

Back in the day used to order food to go at the restaurant next door and eat in the theater watching kung fu movies.
Particulas de consciencia de amor al infinito yeshua❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Yeah, Chinatown is way underutilized at night. Basically, shuts down like Financial district with the exception of a few restaurants.
Good old days of chinese gangsters...no one from the outside would come in and start shxt.
My dad said Bruce lee's dad performed in Grand view not Grand Star which was one block up, between Grand and Stockton
This reminds of the movie killers in the flower moon starring Leonardo DiCaprio marrying oil rich native Americans
👍👍
Since when did the N.H. get incorporated? You might as well include the Natives Indigenous because they derived from Asia too
RIP Gonzalo Lira!!!!

"person of color" lol
Our family are waiting for Shen Yun going to perform at the Great Start Theater.
Great Star is not big enough. Shen Yun performs at the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House which seats 3,000 people.
@@RaymondHng Thank you for your response!
Shen Yun is owned by a cult (Falun Gong) that also owns a crazy tRump supporting newspaper (Epoch Times).
Nothing says Chinese culture like pole dancing, am I right?
Nobody wants to talk about the girl who got killed there? Or the pornography that was filmed there?
