As Summer wears on and Lake Erie's water temp begins to rise, walleyes go deeper in search of cooler water and baitfish such as smelt.
It can be challenging to fish depths of 70+ ft., especially when the walleye are near the bottom.
In this video, Captain Ross Robertson of @Bigwaterfishing breaks down his approach to finding and catching Lake Erie walleye out deep.
Leadcore, Inline Planer Boards, Dipsy Divers, and Downriggers make up the approach. Baits such as Storm Deep Jr. Thundersticks and Rapala Scatter Rap Minnows are the shining stars of the day as they match the size and profile of the walleye's primary forage almost exactly.
Those are tough conditions but Ross makes it look easy.
Definitely needed to have your sea legs this day!

I'VE SEEN VERY FEW SMELT IN THE HUNDRED WALLEYES' I CATCH OUT OF ERIE EVERY YEAR. SO I WONDER IF THAT BLOB ON THE BOTTOM IS TRULY SMELTS? I DON'T KNOW!!
Most of these fish were puking up smelt, so it's very likely that they were.
We caught several walleye this summer that were puking up smelt once in the livewell.

@@DEVILDOG196472-76 FOW out of Geneva, almost all the walleye we kept were puking up smelt. I had never seen that before. Several of the guides we spoke to at the ramp afterwards said that’s where you want to be… and rightfully so, we ran 3 man limit in 4 hrs.
