I loved your book Chris and found it at my local book shop after asking for it specifically. It is such a fascinating insight into your life around the world, and a boy growing up in the South Island in such a staggeringly beautiful off-grid story, so different to how most people live on earth. NZ and Kiwis in general are fascinating to the rest of the world: It's the alleged 'end of the world', but with a unique and un-corrupt 1st world society, and non-overpopulated dog-eat-dog 3rd world corrupt culture. Shows how it can be done, living basically without the over-population and corruption - a very, very unique place.

What a journey!!!! There is an old expression, daughters for dads and sons for mums. So I really want to thank your mum, so so so much for raising such a caring, courageous and adventurous son. With out mums teachings and guidance, love and encouragement, we would never lead to much. So all the mums out there, encourage and support your sons like Christian’s mum has done for him, then he will be successful and famous and you can retire financially secure and most of all, happy 💛🤗

I've just read this inspiring book. It's great! I don't watch TV so hadn't heard of the isolated family from Gorge River. I'm about to start reading your Dad's book and am now watching your TH-cam. Ngā mihi nui tō you all. Thanks for sharing your story. It's so uplifting and refreshing. The opposite of a lot of the BS on social media. Your authenticity rocks

Hi Chris! I discovered you and your family about half an hour ago through the documentary on the BBC and I am absolutely amazed by the way you live all of your passions. And here I am now. It's great that you wrote a book, maybe it will be a little late for me to read your book because of the country I live in but it's definitely on my reading list now!! I sincerely hope that you and your family will always be happy. good luck with this amazing journey🤗🥳

Hi Chris, Reading the book it is clear how amazing your parents are - so rooted to nature, warm, generous hardworking, never complaining, choosing the life they have and celebrating every minute. Your mum who seemed to make magical meals, support your home schooling, find solutions to run the home with a smile... and your dad who seemed to be incredible in working so hard to give both kids such a wonderful unique childhood, building that helicopter was a great example of how much effort he took to build toys and games for you while also hunting and gathering food for the family. An amazing book and life. Thank you for writing this book - it is also brilliantly well written. I am not some who reads adventure books nor non-fiction books like this but this was special and so easy to read

Couple of questions I have. I know it's been a while but I see you reply back often so it's worth a shot!
    1) You mention you can easily move (and nearly run!) across the rocks when going to gorge river. Can we see a video? I'd love to see you sprint over these massive boulders haha!
    2) You mention in the interview video with your mother that you guys never had any emergencies. Why was that? I understand from the video and your comments that it is partially your immune system. I also assume you didn't do any dangerous risks and avoided any unnecessary ones. Did you guys just live life or did you have specific plans that you kept yourself mindful of in order to not get badly injured?
    3) What footwear do you guys (especially your mum and dad!) Wear? I see they wear the classic kiwi gumboot, which makes sense since they are waterproof, what hiking boots do you, your mum and your dad use (especially your dad and has he had to change them since living here?).
    4) What are your thoughts on hiking boots compared to trail running shoes?
Just bought your book today and excited to read it!

Hi Chris, I’ve been following your story since New Lives in the Wild documentary. I lived in Franz Josef Glacier for two years from 2019-2021, and admire you and your families live in such a beautiful place and what a great life experience!! I’m staying in Canada at the moment, watching your video and listening to your stories just bring me back to those days when I was there. Such such a wonderful place and beautiful people! Thanks a lot Chris, for putting things together in a book! Cheers!

Love your book - your Mum’s wombat hat is very warm for my hubby on his frozen morning walks. Your story may be God’s way of showing those with eyes and ears to hear what is coming for humans in this world. Perhaps your Dad was someone who actually listened to him….

Kia ora Chris. Thank you for sharing your amazing story. I grew up in Haast & Cascade. I have never been to Gorge River only as far as Barn Bay, but I do plan to walk there one day and enjoy a cuppa with your folks. I will never forget Robert turning up at the Martyr homestead or Okuru when I was a young girl. He just amazed me, a very tall captivating figure with piercing blue eyes. One memory I will never forget is a night when we were having a roast for dinner. Robert had turned up tired and weary from Gorge River, wearing his cowhide footwear. Tied to his belt was a small muslin bag. He proceeded to untie it, placed it on the table and opened it up. Inside were “sprouts” which he then sprinkled over his roast dinner. I’ll never forget the look on Dad’s face. I can imagine him thinking “What were these strange things that he was eating? And to ruin a bloody good dinner!” Telling your story is so special. We just took the remote lifestyle for granted and thought nothing of how your family were living. Now all these years later and having left South Westland I appreciate how special the place is and the extraordinary life that you were very privileged to have. Nga mini te nui. Gina Schroder (nee Nolan).

Thats amazing that they want to get out there and hike! Start by getting some shoes or light weight hiking boots, a small backpack and a rain jacket. And find some short hikes of a few hours on nice trails to get started on. And then they can explore further and further on the map...
