  • Alot of people don't realize that replacing a cracked windshield is not as easy as it used to be and it is more costly because of it. Also very careful who works on it now as it is more important than ever.

    Steve, you are so right. That just happened to me. I spoke with my insurance company and they will cover the recalibration. I took the car to SafeLite and they included the recalibration in cost to insurance company. Toyota will charge you approx $250 or more to recalibrate. Unfortunate I had to take it back to Safelite because my auto wipers would not detect rain. Apparently it developed a bubble and would not work. They fixed it right away.

    I am on a Facebook Rav4 page and there is a feeling by some that windshields on the new cars are thinner and crack more easily than the older ones. Is this true? TIA

    • @stevenwelchtoyota

      Not that I have seen. I think there are more road objects and that is the issue

      I've had two windshields replaced within six months on our 2019 Prius and I asked that question at the shop and the guy said yes they are thinner and lighter than they used to be. They want to reduce the overall weight of today's cars.

    • @adamzylstra7469
      @adamzylstra7469 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely 100% true. I’ve had 3 Subaru windshields crack. No object strikes, they crack on their own. My car sat at the dealership for over 4 months the last time because they were on national backorder. That should tell you something.

  • @victorgold4735
    @victorgold4735 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Maybe the folks should make better windshields to begin with cause the smallest little smth on the road leaves a little chip on that Toyota. I am not even talking about paint quality…

    Great review. I had a cracked windshield that I had replaced at the Toyota dealer per my insurance company's instructions. It's a 2021 Highlander Hybrid.
    My car was also fitted a electronic windshield wiper de-icer as standard equipment. When I purchased the car new it showed a filament on the bottom of the windshield. When the Windshield was replaced, it was gone. The dealer claimed it would still work. Is that true without the filament (like the rear window defogger)?

    • @stevenwelchtoyota
      @stevenwelchtoyota  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a wiper deicer. It's on the highlander and 4runner also on some rav4s

      It's a wiper deicer. There was a defogger like element in the windshield before it cracked. When the Toyota dealer replaced the windshield, it was gone. Shouldn't a new windshield wiper deicer also be part of the new windshield?

    For windshield replacements does the camera have to be unplugged? Because ive heard that some shops that replace windshields don’t need to unplug the camera therefore not needing recalibration

    • @stevenwelchtoyota
      @stevenwelchtoyota  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      its not about plugging in or not. its due to the fact that glass is different and how the camera sees through it is different. the calibration adjust to what the camera sees
