A couple of things the record store should make sure they are doing. 1: Put the price ON the product, but don't put stickers on record jackets or digipaks unless they are in a plastic sleeve. 2: Keep "solo" artists out of band sections- Jon Anderson should not be in the Yes section. 3: Make your products accessible to look at. Stuff behind the counter or too high does not get purchased. 4: Keep the discounted stuff alphabetized by letter at least. I hate sifting through 100 copies of Barry Manilow to find maybe 1 title that I am interested in.
Couldn't agree more, almost every single time it's going to be to your benefit. Nobody knows that shop better than the people working there. Another thing that I'd recommend is that when they ask, because they always do... is there anything you're looking for, don't say 'just looking' just tell them who your favorite bands are, you never know what they might have that you might never see. There's always stuff that's being processed into the store and may not be on the shelves when you're visiting. You want to buy stuff and they want to sell stuff, it's a match made in heaven 🤣🤘
The whole smartphone thing is etiquette whenever you're in a public space. I dont want to hear your music or conversations while im on the bus. Buy headphones or earbuds thats what there for.
I wrote articles about working in a record store back in the '90s. I can relate to everything you said, Brendon. And then some, because I'm a woman and working in a record store, assholes would tell me to smile. Seriously? Or they'd say, "The guy always gives me more for my used CDs/records/used t-shirts etc." (Yes we bought used punk tees and they'd sell like crazy.) *Then come back when that guy is here!* People would hang out *all day long* even though I was trying to work. We didn't have cellphones back then, or computers. It was all done via memory and just eyeballing things. No Discogs, no eBay, no PopSike. You just had to know your music. It sure made it more difficult to work with groupies hanging around. One day a regular came in (he rarely bought stuff and was just a loiterer mostly). Other customers were in the store. He yelled out, "What is this *SHIT* you're playing?" So embarrassing. I should have kicked him out right then and there. A customer wanted to hear it and I was playing it for them. I have so many stories. I worked there 7 years. Thank you for making this video! It is greatly appreciated.

@@BrendonSnyder yes, there were some times when it was frustrating. LOL But a lot of the time it was a blast! I got lots of perks, guest lists for shows, free CDs and records, etc. Plus I met so many people through the store and still have some of them as friends to this day. Seems I came off with my initial comments as negative, but had so much fun. Ordering product was always exciting too because I could order what I wanted. When the mail came, there were so many packages for us with free promos. And when people came in to trade or sell CDs, cassettes or records, of course I got first dibs.
The problem with people "not being dicks" is that's all they know, they live life oblivious to the rules of etiquette. Essentially, it's their world, the rest of us are just traffic cones! Great bumper sticker = Mean People Suck, just saw it yesterday.
Being an 'oldie' in age....lol....regarding the word vinyl, hey they are albums...lol....records....I appreciate the youth have brought them back but never used the word 'vinyl'...I still have all my albums mostly bought in the 70s and still play in mint condition.
Another thing that I hate with a passion are frigging thieves! There are folks just steal the cds and leave the cases. Now there is no sale for the owner, and no item for the potential customer.
That was a problem 25 years ago and shops had to keep the discs behind the counter. It isn't an issue anymore. CDs are utterly worthless without the artwork and case. You cant sell it and you can already hear it online without having to steal it.

Be courteous to fellow customers and the staff. I worked in a record store for 6 years and one of my peeves was when something was out of stock and a customer would cuss you out. Look around till Im done! And yes, when you're done with a row push them back.
I've worked at record stores in the past and a lot of the time when a customer buys a bunch of CD's or records, the shop would give them a discount price That would make us have repeat customers, especially when they're spending hundreds of dollars on merchandise & the customer leaves happy.
One for the record stores: don’t crowd the records in the bins so tight you have to use two hands to pull it out carefully. And have more dividers between groups of records so the records won’t warp from the weight of each other.

The price being asked is the price! I have a guy that will give me a discount or even free product (occasionally) because i but alot and (probably) i dont ask for a discount.
even as a Mexican when is almost a cultural thing to haggle with everything I ver rarely ask for discount, it has to be one of those situations where I know the item is second hand and overpriced on purpose because the guy did a little research and he thinks his scratched CD with sunbaked cover is worth the same as a mint signed copy, I only ask for discount when I know I am being scammed like that or when I am buying a lot of CDs and I just want a very small symbolic discount so I can buy a drink on my way home.
Agree with all the etiquette rules you mentioned except one. Asking for discount. Agree with regards to new stock, but used CD's or vinyl is a completely different beast. Condition is paramount! If you feel a used CD is overpriced due to condition, but you will still consider adding it to your collection for whatever reason, then I personally see nothing wrong with bartering a better price. Same with bulk purchases...buy volume, get a sweet deal. Just my opinion Brendon.
We said we were only talking about “new” product when it comes to not asking for a discount. I stand by the example that you don’t go to the grocery store and ask for a better deal on your milk so why do it at a record store? There is no difference.
I hate when I go into a store and the records are too tight to flip though. I get that there are places that are tight for space but when they are crushed it’s too much work to thumb though.
This doesn’t apply only to record stores, it can apply to anywhere you go in life. It’s come to the point I avoid leaving the house because people are fuckin stupid.
Some of my pet peeves: Just generally, people not paying attention to their surroundings. If I've been flipping through records going from my right to left, when people start flipping immediately to my left. Man, pay attention because now we have to do that awkward dance of going around each other. Next, stop playing your damn music on your phone so we can all hear it. I don't need to hear what you're listening to. Bring headphones if you're going to do that. Third, don't stand amidst the crowd and check the condition of every record. Make your stack and when you're done flipping, step aside, find a space where you're not in anyone's way, and then check the condition. Those are just some, but it really comes down to just having awareness and common courtesy.
You could have T Shirts on your merch stand with the logos 'Don't be a dick!!' And 'It's not OK!!!' I have given this a lot of thought as you can tell !!!!😅😅
Also people will bump you out of the way I was looking at CDs in my local record store and man passed by Me and I moved to let him by me and he said asshole lol
I can safely say I never do any of that. I did have a horrible exsperance with an owner though. I stepped into his shop and I was looking down the shelf. I saw a Lords of acid cd. I pulled it off to see how much it was. He comes running up and imdedatly says "MAKE sure you put that back right where you got it." . I would never put things back in the wrong spot! I was so thrown off I did not even look at the price, I just put it right back and stepped away from everything. He asked what I wanted, I said "Well maybe some Gwar?" he again right off got all mad. He was like "I have been doing this 35 years , I have NEVER heard of them!" I have no clue why he was so angry about it , there are loads of bands out there. No one knows them all. I just figured if he had Misfits and lords an stuff maybe was all. I wanted to buy a few of the misfits cds but he was so angry I just left. I am lucky there is a nice guy in town that also sells some metal/punk type stuff cause it is really hard to find here. I never really talk much to him but at least he is always friendly and checks to see if he can order it for me if it is not there.
A records store isn't a place where you act with the attitude of "me, myself and I" and everything is about you. In other words "DON'T BE A DICK!" Take something out, put it back the way, the place you found it or if you can't figure out where you got it from, give it to a worker to put it back. It is that simple! I have personally been turned on to other bands that I like or have been notified of new music coming out, just because of this channel. Maybe it’s because I am just a customer and still new (relatively speaking I started my vinyl collection around 2019) and so no doubt have said vinyls with an ‘S’ but I don’t get the issue either. You as the seller/older fan and me as a customer/new fan both know the thing we are referring to so what’s the problem? If it occurred as just a relatively rare case-by-case thing it could be considered a nit-pick but it seems to be inherent to the community sometimes which then feels like it’s a gatekeeping thing even though it really shouldn’t be.
I agree there is no issue with it. Anthony is just a purist. What I hate is when people have an issue calling records vinyl because they say that’s what they’re made of and since we don’t call CDs plastic why call record vinyl. People that get hung up on words other people use should not worry about things they can’t control.

I agree with Joseph - using it that way is grammatically wrong and it sounds wrong. Like if a young child exclaimed "Mummy! I caught two fishes on my camping trip!" Now imagine that same kid is your age, fishing with you and still pluralizes that word wrong, knowingly and proudly. It'd be kind of annoying, right?
What's your take on checking out the vinyl condition before you buy it .I had one store owner that took exception to it. I only check the ones I'm buying
On used items I always check the condition. But of course you have to be careful and not finger print the CD or LP and don’t shove the sleeve/booklet back in so that it gets damaged. Remember, even if you aren’t interested, someone else might be so you want to leave it in a good of condition as you found it. Just like you want to put it back where you found it so others have the same opportunity as you. 👍

It’s more if you bring it in the store, don’t put it down on top of the CDs and Records. Especially if it’s a cold drink because the condensation will run down and get the merch wet. But also accidents can happen and you might spill it. Most stores don’t allow food and beverages in their stores anyway.
I heard the two main words in this ,,, Courteous & Respect . I guess I am one of the rare few who actually conscientiously do the things you recommend when in the record stores . It's a matter of thinking about your actions and how it will effect others . It would be a better world if we could all be aware of things like this and try and help keep things in order for the other customers as well as the store owners , to try and help make things easier on everyone . Kindness and consideration really is cool !
I've only asked my local record store owner for a discount once or twice, only because it was something obscure and overpriced that I knew would sit there for ages and not sell. I'm sure he'd rather make a price cut and get something decent for it instead of it gathering dust. It helps if you have a good relationship with them. And treat it like bargaining, instead of trying to "get" something. Bargaining can sometimes be beneficial for both parties involved.
Back when the LP was king I managed a record store. At least 20 times a day i had to go to racks and push the records from facing forward and put the 45 rpm singles back in alphabetical order. Another gripe was listening stations we had. A person would ask to listen to a record then walk out without saying thank you after listening to one track or the whole side. Lastly, ( in Australia we have stores similar to Walmart ) someone would listen to a record in our store then walk out and 5 minutes later I would see them coming out of Walmart with the same album they had just listened to. Lastly a person would come in and pick a handful of records, walk around the store a few times and decide which album they are going to buy then dump the rest in the nearest rack. Sometimes I wanted to strangle the general public!
If I see someone flipping through a section that I first intended to flip through, I will typically just go to the opposite end (I.e., the person is in the A section, maybe I’ll walk over to the Z section and start there and work backwards). That way, they’re not disrupted and since I’d probably land in the Z’s anyway, it’s no inconvenience to the other person to have to move or feeling me enter their personal space.
I'm tired of Record stores only carrying new re-released albums only and not old vintage ones. Second, record stores overcharging for vintage records. Many I have been in charge insane prices for vintage albums
Love this video. The one that always infuriates me is the nerd collector who puts records on top of the next row and is oblivious to anyone else wanting to browse. For the stores, as someone said below, I hate it when the bins are so tight that you can't really flip through and browse.

There's nothing wrong with politely asking anyone for a different price. You can just as politely decline. Even an architect might someday find themselves in a position that they need to make a deal in order to get the business
When the price is set with a price tag it’s tacky and disrespectful. You’re not at a garage sale or flea market when haggling is expected. You don’t get to go into Home Depot and ask for a different price on a new lawn mower. So why would you feel it’s acceptable to do it in a record store? And again we are talking about new merchandise, not the used. Used is a different story.
Is it ok for a customer to open the seal on a cd to see the disc and inlay? What about asking the store to play the cd to sample it before purchase? What about returns, you buy something then the next day you wanna return it because you don’t like the songs.
Why the heck would they allow you to open the cd and play it to sample it? You can sample it on TH-cam, most likely it has been posted multiple times by different persons. Stores would let people sample cds before TH-cam came out in 2005. Have you been living in a cave away from society the last 20 years?
People generally prefer to buy something brand new, still sealed, unspoiled. They will not be happy to buy something from a store that someone else has opened and played. Your point of view as a customer is totally selfish, stores will get p’d off with you if you think you are entitled to try before you buy/keep and basically spoiling their stock for the next customer. The store is an outlet to purchase the product, they’re not a platform for you to ‘sample’ the product.

I’m from a different part of the world and way back you are allowed to take the cd to the staff and they’d crack open the seal and let you play it. I never do it but seen others do. Blow my Fuse is a great album. 👍 One of those very overlooked albums of the late 80s. I should say overlooked now. Back then it did very well. Remember hearing "Don't close your eyes" on the radio a lot. And yes, I'm mostly a Thrash, Death, Doom, sludge kind of guy but great music is great music! Cheers ☕

If the store is busy, and I have several items I will ask the clerk to hold them for me at the register
A records store isn't a place where you act with the attitude of "me, myself and I" and everything is about you. In other words "DON'T BE A DICK!" Take something out, put it back the way, the place you found it or if you can't figure out where you got it from, give it to a worker to put it back. It is that simple!

I have personally been turned on to other bands that I like or have been notified of new music coming out, just because of this channel. I don't have a problem with people calling them vinyls. What is the issue with that?
Maybe it’s because I am just a customer and still new (relatively speaking I started my vinyl collection around 2019) and so no doubt have said vinyls with an ‘S’ but I don’t get the issue either. You as the seller/older fan and me as a customer/new fan both know the thing we are referring to so what’s the problem?
If it occurred as just a relatively rare case-by-case thing it could be considered a nit-pick but it seems to be inherent to the community sometimes which then feels like it’s a gatekeeping thing even though it really shouldn’t be.

I agree there is no issue with it. Anthony is just a purist. What I hate is when people have an issue calling records vinyl because they say that’s what they’re made of and since we don’t call CDs plastic why call record vinyl. People that get hung up on words other people use should not worry about things they can’t control.
@@sezzac155it's just a weird semantics thing, not really a gatekeeping issue. Vinyl is the material records are made of. It sounds weird for the same reason you don't call boxes "cardboards" or books "papers."
I agree with Joseph - using it that way is grammatically wrong and it sounds wrong. Like if a young child exclaimed "Mummy! I caught two fishes on my camping trip!" Now imagine that same kid is your age, fishing with you and still pluralizes that word wrong, knowingly and proudly. It'd be kind of annoying, right?
What's your take on checking out the vinyl condition before you buy it .I had one store owner that took exception to it. I only check the ones I'm buying
On used items I always check the condition. But of course you have to be careful and not finger print the CD or LP and don’t shove the sleeve/booklet back in so that it gets damaged. Remember, even if you aren’t interested, someone else might be so you want to leave it in a good of condition as you found it. Just like you want to put it back where you found it so others have the same opportunity as you. 👍

It’s more if you bring it in the store, don’t put it down on top of the CDs and Records. Especially if it’s a cold drink because the condensation will run down and get the merch wet. But also accidents can happen and you might spill it. Most stores don’t allow food and beverages in their stores anyway.

I heard the two main words in this ,,, Courteous & Respect . I guess I am one of the rare few who actually conscientiously do the things you recommend when in the record stores . It's a matter of thinking about your actions and how it will effect others . It would be a better world if we could all be aware of things like this and try and help keep things in order for the other customers as well as the store owners , to try and help make things easier on everyone . Kindness and consideration really is cool !

I've only asked my local record store owner for a discount once or twice, only because it was something obscure and overpriced that I knew would sit there for ages and not sell. I'm sure he'd rather make a price cut and get something decent for it instead of it gathering dust. It helps if you have a good relationship with them. And treat it like bargaining, instead of trying to "get" something. Bargaining can sometimes be beneficial for both parties involved.
Back when the LP was king I managed a record store. At least 20 times a day i had to go to racks and push the records from facing forward and put the 45 rpm singles back in alphabetical order. Another gripe was listening stations we had. A person would ask to listen to a record then walk out without saying thank you after listening to one track or the whole side. Lastly, ( in Australia we have stores similar to Walmart ) someone would listen to a record in our store then walk out and 5 minutes later I would see them coming out of Walmart with the same album they had just listened to. Lastly a person would come in and pick a handful of records, walk around the store a few times and decide which album they are going to buy then dump the rest in the nearest rack. Sometimes I wanted to strangle the general public!
Same in clothing stores!

Great video, guys! A lot of people these days just suck! Rude and inconsiderate all over the place.
If I see someone flipping through a section that I first intended to flip through, I will typically just go to the opposite end (I.e., the person is in the A section, maybe I’ll walk over to the Z section and start there and work backwards). That way, they’re not disrupted and since I’d probably land in the Z’s anyway, it’s no inconvenience to the other person to have to move or feeling me enter their personal space.
The motto I used to describe myself was I’m an asshole w/ a heart.

I'm tired of Record stores only carrying new re-released albums only and not old vintage ones. Second, record stores overcharging for vintage records. Many I have been in charge insane prices for vintage albums
Love this video. The one that always infuriates me is the nerd collector who puts records on top of the next row and is oblivious to anyone else wanting to browse. For the stores, as someone said below, I hate it when the bins are so tight that you can't really flip through and browse.

People are born selfish. You never have to teach a baby to be selfish, you have to teach them to share. Parents don’t like to parent anymore, and we are seeing the results all over.

@@BrendonSnyder here in my country there are not that much record stores. And those which exist works just like tourist spots with astronomical prices. All the music I buy comes from other countries. Nevertheless, that’s my dream job but reality is what it is 🤦♂️

There's nothing wrong with politely asking anyone for a different price. You can just as politely decline. Even an architect might someday find themselves in a position that they need to make a deal in order to get the business
When the price is set with a price tag it’s tacky and disrespectful. You’re not at a garage sale or flea market when haggling is expected. You don’t get to go into Home Depot and ask for a different price on a new lawn mower. So why would you feel it’s acceptable to do it in a record store? And again we are talking about new merchandise, not the used. Used is a different story.

Is it ok for a customer to open the seal on a cd to see the disc and inlay? What about asking the store to play the cd to sample it before purchase? What about returns, you buy something then the next day you wanna return it because you don’t like the songs.

You can sample it on TH-cam, most likely it has been posted multiple times by different persons. Stores would let people sample cds before TH-cam came out in 2005.

People generally prefer to buy something brand new, still sealed, unspoiled. They will not be happy to buy something from a store that someone else has opened and played.
Your point of view as a customer is totally selfish, stores will get p’d off with you if you think you are entitled to try before you buy/keep and basically spoiling their stock for the next customer. The store is an outlet to purchase the product, they’re not a platform for you to ‘sample’ the product.

I’m from a different part of the world and way back you are allowed to take the cd to the staff and they’d crack open the seal and let you play it. I never do it but seen others do. There was even a sign to say it. New Jersey is a different place, now is certainly a different time so I was just asking to see how things are, learn the culture. Calm your tits.

Blow my Fuse is a great album. 👍 One of those very overlooked albums of the late 80s. I should say overlooked now. Back then it did very well. Remember hearing "Don't close your eyes" on the radio a lot. And yes, I'm mostly a Thrash, Death, Doom, sludge kind of guy but great music is great music! Cheers ☕
