Seems like your example pool is in a area of the country where it freezes hard and deep in winter.
I'm in Portland, Oregon, where it rains plenty before it freezes. I'd add a step to your procedure where, before reinstalling the skimmer covers, add a thin perimeter of foam gasketing or a tiny bead of silicone caulk to keep rain from filling up the skimmer before a hard freeze comes along.
As I was unacquainted with the Gizmo freeze buffers until seeing your video, I cut up some big blocks of Styrofoam packing, glued them together to make a big coffee-can sized plug, and pushed that into the skimmer to displace all the water. Styrofoam is a great insulator too, keeping or delaying the frost getting to the buried piping.

Nice video, after I replaced our pump again, I was told that it was a good idea to put antifreeze in the pump makes the seals last a lot longer since they stay wet.
If you run the pump with no water than the seals overheat and fail. Seals layed up dry are fine, thats the way they are on the store shelf. Just drain the pump before the temp gets below freezing and it will be ok. And if you cant get to it that day, just turn the pump on and circulate the water which will keep your equipment and pipes from freezing until you can winterize.

How big of an air compressor do you have in terms of gallons? Blowing out lawn sprinklers requires a very large air pump to generate the volume of air at the necessary pressure, is it the same for the deep end drain? What PSI do you set it at?
Once the underground pool water level gets high enough, i have found the ShopVac could not generate the pressure and volume required to force the water out, so NO bubbles.

Get you a piece of PVC pipe about 2 1/2-3' long with a threaded bushing on one end, and 90° elbow on the other, You can then add another 6"-1' piece of PVC pipe to the other side of the elbow making and L shape. Turn it up side down and screw it into the bottom of your skimmer. Now when you hook up your compressor it blows the water out of the line and out of the skimmer body as well. Easy Peasy, and quick, at least on the one that is not cross threaded. I then flip the bushing to the short PVC pipe screw it into the inlets so I can pour anti-freeze into the inlets.. Your funnel works well too. Very helpful video.

I have a question that I hope you will take the time to answer. I purchased this home 2 years ago and the pool was already here, it was installed in 2001, it has a main drain but there is no lever anywhere for me to switch from skimmer to main drain, yes, I had to use a little submersible pump when the pool needed to be drained for the new pebble tec.(23000 gallons) How do I know if I'm getting the water out of that line?
I have to do this tomorrow but how do you keep the anti freeze in the returns ?

Do you still have to blow out the main drain line if the main drain has been sealed off under a vinyl liner and the plumbing valve is closed?
Thanks for showing a closing again this year. I still don't feel confident closing my pool. I can open it no problem. I did change the sand in the filter this year though. Our pools are about the same size. I have an auto cover so I have to fill it back up so the cover will close. Looking forward to fall and winter, and your snowblower vids. i see in some videos when people are pumping lines full of air they put the filter on recirculate. does it matter to do this step?
First timer, although I did open the pool this spring. I have a similar setup as you. Two skimmers, three returns. Removed ladder, rail, skimmer and return hardware. Water level is below returns. I'm getting 20 to 30 psi out of the compressor, connected to pump using the 1/4" npt. Have tried 1 skimmer at a time and then just the main drain. If I take out the pressure gage, I'm getting air, but not a single bubble. I have a gas heater which is off. What am I missing?
Can u leave silica filter plumbed and outside? If so do you put a tifreeze thru silica filter or just disconnect and drain as you did in the building?
I like the video !!!! Wonder though if you could make some winterizing parts permanent so you could have summer and winter positions.
Sounds like there would be good money in a solution like that.
Its called an automation panel. It monitors air temp and runs variable speed pump at slow speed and operates spa and pool auto valves, running the spa lines every fifteen minutes, than running the pool lines the same, back and forth until air temp gets above freezing.

I have a question is there a reason why a wet dry vac couldn't or shouldn't be used to suck up the water out of the skimmer instead of a cup when blowing out the lines?
The wet vac should work great. Just pull the filter off first and clean it out. It is so much running around and getting tools to shut the pool that it is easy for my to go low tech. with the cup.

You need more pressure

I have a return that I dont use but like to block it from where it branches off do you know of what I can use? Its close enough to use a hose to spray like great stuff in that branch but I was thinking you might have a better product to use?

Can you tell me how much pressure you had the compressor set at. Certainly don’t want 100 PSI! Maybe 30 PSI MAX??
Should line the edge of the plastic pool step at the water line with bags of anti-freeze so surface ice pressure there doesn't crack the steps. Also, as others have said, a shop vac provides sufficient pressure to blow out the lines & also to vacuum out any remaining water so scooping is unnecessary
How much psi do you need to blow out the lines?
In addition to them sometimes not being powerful enough, not all ShopVacs with the same HorsePower rating output the same amount, especially if they have a much lower decibel rating. Why? The manufacturer achieves a much safer sound rating by detecting the pressure buildup and automatically dialing down the power.

Hope you did it correctly. The pool company is liable if done wrong, if you do it wrong it's way more than a couple hundred
Also pumping down a pool can cause liners to float not advised unless is concrete pool.
@@mattf6539 as a pool guy that closes over 100 pools a year I agree with your first statement. Also no need to pump below the returns when closed properly, also it’s better bc then you can ensure there is no leaks in the plugs. But can you explain how pumping it down below the returns will make a liner float? Liners float due to the water table of a given area. When the pool is built that is addressed by putting a blind line below the pool bottom to pump water out continuously no matter the time of year
Can you or anyone tell me what to do with the pump plug for winter? Do I just tie it up and set it on top of the pump exposed? Leave it on the floor? Wrap it?
And do I have to remove that glass thing and is it necessary to remove the guage?
Wont bugs get into those open holes if I remove all the plugs to pump and filter? Is that part really necessary or can I leave them on.

You forgot to blow out the backwash line! It can freeze and break between the shed and french drain.
Nice video, I can now close my pool. No more paying to get it closed. The only part that I wasn't sure of was blowing out the main drain. Can i use a wet vac to blow out the lines? I have a heavy duty shop-vac 16-gallon 6.5 HP.
You definitely can. I found my leaf blower rigged with an attachment to cover the hole in the return line provided more power but the shop vac should work.
What type of attachment did you put on your leaf blower?
I just connected 4HP shop vac with an adapter over pump's skimmer. It works fine.
What size pool do you have?
What keeps the air from the main drain once you lock it from just exiting through the bottom of the pool? Or does it not matter because gravity won’t allow water back up the line anyway? Thanks.
If you close the main drain while the compressor is running you'll create an air lock. Just be sure you you don't let the compressor run too long with all valves closed.
You emphasized on adding antifreeze to the skimmers. What about the inlet on the bottom? Just air blowing? Is it too deep to freeze? I saw people put antifreeze before blowing and stop when red stuff starts to come out. Another thing, what is the point of balancing water and adding the winterizing kit? After 6-9 months heavy rain and thawing ice will dilute everything.
It keeps your water in top shape, that way if it gets too scummy instead of having to drain the water and start over (which can be costly) you just add the necessary chemistry to get the water up to par.
I recommend you use a wet-vac to get water out of yhe skimmer

@@HedelTorres there might be enough pressure, but I would recommend using compressed air (25 - 30 psi) to dry out the lines as best as you can

Naw, use a cyclone liner vac, it's what pool professionals use,. You can blow and plug returns when the water is abovegrade.

Our pool guy says its safe to just start up your pool with the Marine antifreeze. We have done it that way for 5 years no problems
It's the non toxic stuff people use for winterizing RV's and cottages. Won't really hurt.
What do you do if the water level in the pool raises in the winter? Do you pump the water out?
I’ve never closed a pool before but i was a lifeguard and cpo for years in order to drain the water you can hit waste like he said in the beginning or backwash for a while
4HP shop vac with an adapter for pump's skimmer worked for my 20,000 pool with two inlets on the bottom (half-empty at 6ft depth). Make sure no air leak from a vac. I just push on the top of the vac.
Can ANYONE answer the question about the 2 holes in the skimmer box? No one I’ve seen addresses this issue. Do I need to use 2 gizmos or just 1. Someone PLEASE EXPLAIN!!!
I would use 2 if you have 2 of the same size
Nice video we've considered using air. Might give it a try next year looks a lot easier. Our process is similar, we use a shop vac to pull the water out of the lines.
Either way will work, I have tried both and like the air better.

Also better to blow out as much water as possible. Pool antifreeze is good for - 50 c, but more water the higher the freezing temp

Is it really that big a deal to have a little water left in the pipes? Even if it freezes its not going to expand enough to crack a pipe. Also if I can't get all the water out of the main drain pipes, is it best to leave all the valves back to the pump and filter open to relieve the pressure?
Probably depends on the layout of your pipes, if you have an elbow that collects water it could break. Just better to be safe and spend a few bucks on antifreeze.
Quick question. On the main drain, I see you blow it out, but how do you plug it so water doesn’t re-enter the main drain line?
While he blowing the main drain line out he quickly shut the valve off for the main drain. Creating a air lock.

close the skimmer valve. Then turn on pump with filter in backwash or waste position... and the water will be exiting through the bottom main drain and can drop the water level below the returns.

its a salt water pool? is there a price difference between salt and chlorine systems or do they use the same systems and you just pick to put salt or chlorine in it?
Salt is cheaper because you don't have to add chlorine to the pool, but you need to pay up front for the salt water generator.

Great video! Apparently there is some controversy on lowering the water level. The pool company I used in the past never lowered the water claiming it is better for the cover as it won't get stretched as much when you get a lot of snow on top. This year I did lower the water level some but not so much that return lines are completely exposed. I'd definitely like to have the return lines completely exposed for some extra insurance, any comments on the cover stretching would be apprecuated.
You do not have to lower the water below the return jets. If you blow air through and plug it should be fine, but you can't add antifreeze. The pool will fill up to the top with rain, it is not that hard on the cover unless you get snow on top with no water under it. There is no easy way to stretch that cover.
I know I'm a little late to the party but you could always lower the water below the returns, blow them out add anti freeze, plug and then when your all done add water to the pool for the sake of the cover.
You could also place an air pillow for a pool after water is lowered to help "absorb" the space between the cover and top of the water.
I use an old boat tubing tube…it holds the cover up nicely

I have a similar setup, when I blow air in the lines with returns (2) and skimmer (1) I'm not getting bubbles on the other end... I've got about 20-25 PSI on it with a regulated tank compressor, I have verified air is coming out and the skimmer level did raise but only about 5-10% of what yours did. Any ideas?
turn off all other valves so you are only pushing air through the one you want to blow out. Your problem is that your dropping air pressure because it is going out all other plumbing lines. Let me know if this helps. Bob

I'm sure you've learned by now that you needed to drain the pool down much lower to except the rain and snow that will enter the pool over the winter. antifreeze totally not needed and its pretty toxic
Peke's Repose you don’t need to drain the pool any lower man. If there’s a lot of rain it’ll drain naturally at the skimmer collar.

But my advice, wet dry vac. Air compressor like that will not be sufficient. You need a higher volume of air not pressure
I use my high capacity shop vac... easy!!! I also back wash filter before draining but he didn't show to do that.
@@kristinebrady3668 if you are draining the pool you might as well backwash the heck out of the filter. No point in letting it sit dirty all winter.
Good process, but I'll add a few pointers if you don't mind. First, the sand bottle is kinda useless because it is below the freeze line and if the skimmer box fills up (it will) over the winter, the freezing will be above your bottle. I'd use a Gizzmo since it will be at the exact freeze height. The noodle floats on the water and won't prefent freezing much either. It's probably the combination of everything you put in there that keeps it safe. Second, you don't need to put teflon tape on a Gizmo. The rubber o-ring seals it. I love your shed setup, and the drain slit is a cool idea. Wish my pool stuff was safe in my shed. I also give my electronics and the timer a shot of silicone spray to keep corrosion at bay, but mine is outside, so YMMV. Removing the weir door is a good step. I have not done that before.

I don’t trust those gizmos for the skimmer. The plastic looks cheap and could eventually crack and allow water through. I just use a standard plug. Safer.
Oh and fuck anti freeze. If you do the job right, you don’t need “insurance”.
It's Okay (I’m a professional pool installer-20years) I’ll concede that there’s different ways of doing things and that the anti freeze thing is not wrong per se. But I find it entirely unnecessary.
I blow all the lines out directly from the skimmer (backwards yes) with a 3hp liner vac. Trust me... there’s no water left when I’m done. And on top of that? I have to close some of my pools “full” due to the water table being high(liner would float etc) so in those instances I blow my lines bubbling under water and plug under water.
If EVER there is any water left in the lines, it’s minimal and would NOT damage the lines come deep freeze.
Air is always best. Pink “chemmy” juice in my clients pipes being flushed out come spring is gross and unnecessary.
And for the skimmer plug, I’ve seen only one crack... and that was enough for me to lose sleep at night. Lol! So I don’t see the problem with putting a good ol trusty standard plug and jamming the skimmer up with pool noodles.

Good thing you don’t do that professionally, you would loose money. LOL. The water in the backwash line went in the return line when it drained down. You should empty the filter and backwash first then blow it out.
Pool guy here. Antifreeze is useless. 1/2 gallon in 1.5" line that is 30-50' long will have no effect if line fills back up w water.
