In particular, we examine the important role of both the Monastic Schools and Bardic Schools in early learning and education, and the extraordinary fact that Ireland was a centre of learning in the first millennium AD, attracting students from all over Europe, giving rise to the name the 'Island of Saints and Scholars'.
