Hoarders ❤️ Extreme Laundry Room DeClutter Part 1 | Altering an ADHD Habit

  • This episode we’re going to get this Laundry Room back into Shape!! We’ve made amazing progress over the years and it will only take me 2 episodes to get this Laundry Room neat and tidy, not 20!! Lol. We’re continuing the theme of Progress not Perfection! I identify a huge ADHD subconscious habit that constantly reappears and will always create clutter in my Laundry room! This is where my brain is spinning so much that I often don’t finish the task completely. I always tell myself I’ll get it later and I never do!

If you have some wall space in your basement, you could hang the wreaths all in once space. If you put a trash bag over it, it will stay dust free and won’t get accidentally crushed. Plus, you are using vertical space and not floor space!

You've made leaps and bounds in your home! I know I struggle with the "homeless" items and choosing a logical home for them where I know I will find them in the future. One of the biggest issues was my checkbook. I finally decided to keep it in a file tray with my stamps and current bills/mail to sort. It's always where I need it - to pay bills! It may not be everyone's idea of logical, but it is what works for me.

The wreath could go in your Easter decor bin until you undecorate Easter decor. Designate one shelf in the laundry room for long term in limbo items and one shelf for short term in limbo items. The shelf limits the number of in limbo things. More than 3 items per shelf, time to get serious to finish off the in limbo thing or activity or realize you aren’t going to do anything with the stuff and say goodbye. If there is wall space or back of door space left in the laundry room you could hang out of season wreaths on command hooks. My neighbor has a tall wooden ladder hung horizontally on the wall of her garage and she has her monthly and holiday wreaths hanging on it until she moves it to her front door. I don’t know if she has nails or command hooks on the ladder. Luvin’ seeing Pepper!!!

Seeing as your living room is in a sense your office, I'll try to put the books and the unfinished photos albums there.
It is where you store your TH-cam equipment, your furnitures and journals, and I imagine your important documents as well.
While your craft space in the basement is not a reality yet, you craft in your living room (or kitchen?) so I'd keep the photo albums close by.
For the wreath, I'll definitively add a bin for the May-October wreath to be kept with your other seasonal decor.

Question. If you know it’s garbage or recycling and is left because you got distracted why is it that your husband can’t put it in the garage or recycling for you?? That would help from keeping trash if everyone knows it’s trash they can alway get rid of it as well.

I’d buy a wreath box and store that with seasonal decor. The photos and books are harder since you don’t have an office. Can the photos go in a corner near the dining table where you do paperwork? And I wouldn’t normally suggest this, but if it’s definitely temporary, I’d store the box of books in the back of your SUV.

I have watched every single one of your videos from the very beginning. I am super happy you have opened your heart and home to Pepper. She seems like she is an excellent coach and constant companion while you are working on each area. 😸. I'm so glad that you are showing us the reality of what a process this can be for folks. Progress not perfection is such a healthy mantra and mindset. Here are some ideas for the items that hung you up this episode:. The wreaths are an easy one as I see it. First decision is do you want to store each wreath with the corresponding set of decor you put out seasonally.? For example, an Easter wreath would stay with your Easter decor and your Valentine's wreath would stay with your Valentine's decor, etc. Or would you rather keep all your wreaths that you use for your front door in one bin that houses them all? You could put each one up for each corresponding season and pack the others away together in their shared bin. Whichever way you prefer, I would then keep the bin that has wreaths in it in the area where you keep your other decor in the basement, clearly labeled of course. I suggest you store all the pictures in a plastic container where they will be safe from spills until you get around to working on them and I would keep this container of pictures in any cabinet or closet where you have space. Do you have room in your bedroom closet? Do you have room in the bottom of the linen closet? Where are you likely to work on this project? I would put the bin of pictures near to where you plan to work on them. More importantly I would set dates with yourself to sit down and work on that project. As for your books for the book signing, I would also keep them in a plastic bin to protect them from moisture and I would store them labeled of course in the basement and then I would contact the folks you plan to do the book signing with and put the dates on your calendar so you know you've got a plan for when you are going to use that bin of books. I hope these ideas help. And yes, I agree with you that everything needs a home in order for our homes to feel comfortable and not overrun with clutter. I think you've come a long way, baby. Keep going! I'll be watching... 😘

Cass from Clutterbug has a cabinet for items that don’t have a permanent home. That way the unhomed items have a resting place and she knows where to look for them. Perhaps you could designate some space like that. Of course you do have to be careful that the space doesn’t start to become packed full and that things are actually getting cycled through.

I don’t have wreaths, but is there some sort of hat rack for the back of a door that could keep them all together. Storing them vertically to not take up much space, but also so that they’re visible? (In order of event/ season through the year would be dreamy!).
Hubby is good at DIY. Maybe not right onto the basement wall in case of damp, but some hooks even in a dry place vertically might work? Or a pole with hooks in rows on 2 or 3 sides? In the craft area in the basement?
(A picture would work better than words, sorry for the waffle - no idea if it makes sense 🤣)

since you're going to create a craft "home" in the basement, maybe the metal shelf in the laundry room can become your "limbo" zone. it can be a visual reminder of the projects you already have started :) oh and just add a nail or hook in the laundry room for your wreath and make it inside decor until you put it on the door!

I keep my current projects in one of those three-tier wheeled carts (Ikea Raskog) - it's my office cart. For the photo albums, if you're going to end up storing the completed albums in the living room, why not keep the project there, too, so you can work on it a bit at a time while watching TV and put the albums away as they get finished.

I love your heart 💜 I’m a recovering hoarder, it’s been 7 years now and last week I had a little panic thinking that I was relapsing. When I got out of my low period I realised that actually I’d been keeping boxes because we are planning to move soon and it’s not a hoarding thing. I just organised them better so I wasn’t frustrated with them lying around or jamming the door. It’s too easy to panic and then panic about panicking and go into a downward spiral. But you totally reframed it in kindness to yourself, progress not perfection 💜

  • @Kattenma
    @Kattenma 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

A tip for the boxes - I keep a paper grocery bag like from Trader Joe’s in the kitchen and all boxes we get immediately get flattened when done with them and put in the bag. You can fit sooo many boxes when flattened in one bag and then just recycle the whole thing on garbage day.

Do it on a dime has a peg board inside her garage where she hangs her wreaths I think....I love that idea....I usually put mine in one of the bigger store bags and put them in like an old fan box with the decor from that season but if I had the money I would get one of those fancy plastic wreath containers or even a large hat box on a shelf in the garage or storage area. And I'm pretty sure Cass from clutterbug has a whole hutch type of furniture for things that don't have a home like donation stuff pending/library books etc. That might help. Best wishes! I'm doing my laundry room today too since my son climbed behind the washing machine and crushed the dryer tube and detached a tube that leaked water everywhere last Sunday and it's been chaos ever since lol the good news is it's all repaired, I did it by myself and....I only have about 6 more loads of laundry to catch up on as opposed to 10. So I'll just do all the remaining clutter spots in between I guess. Blah! My only inspiration at this point is you and knowing when the weather goes from cold to super warm fast and suddenly.....I won't have all of these inside areas in chaos and can focus on the yard, porch and garage! Sending you love and Light! I have adhd also and even with medicine I struggle intensely. You are SO not alone! Thank you for sharing your loving heart and healing journey XoXoX

I suggest making a spot on the shelf for “work in progress”. It would be a box that would change as your projects change. It would also limit how many projects you’re currently working on. Sometimes it will hold party supplies for an upcoming birthday party. Other times it would hold all the stuff you’re collecting for Easter baskets. Everyone has stuff that needs a temporary home, you just need a designated spot for it on one of the shelves. Perhaps where the ponies are since there is so much unused space there.

    • @holly5048
      @holly5048 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

yes to this. limbo things just need their own spot/shelf. dedicating one shelf or half of shelf to limbo things makes things much easier so things arent spread out and you know exactly where they are.

Your videos are like therapy for me, because I see how your children do not have to expierience the helplessness that we had to expierience and you are doing so good in reflecting yourself. A lot of people are not as far as you are in the process of dealing with menthal health. You can be sooo proud of yourself!! And to calm you down, I do not have hoarding disorder, so your kids maybe also won't have it later in live. :-) But if, they have the best example how to handle with it.

Yes I do have a spot for "limbo items". There will always be ongoing projects. And if you have a spot for these items, not only do you find them, but also when it gets full you know you have to give priority to some projects over others. And that's a good thing because there are only so many hours in the day anyways.

I had never seen that shelf so organized. You are doing great. Regards the wreaths, I don't see them as limbo stuff, their category is decoration and seasonal decoration in specific. So, it could go with the other seasonal decorations labeled as wreaths. You can totally merge things from different sub categories in a container and label it with those sub categories.

I have a shelf in my multi-purpose room, where limbo things like presents to give soon, things I have to bring to someone, and things I have to fix or complete before putting them away live. It is a good place to keep everything, that will be gone soon and, therefore, does not need a real home. When I do my weekly tidying up, I make sure nothing is on the shelve that shouldn't be there.

I have 2 bins that have changed my life. They are called my "to do" bin. This means there is a task to be done. It goes in the small one as a next up and the big one for awkward size things or as a bigger storage if my high priority small one is full. I leave sticky notes for my partner to accomplish a "to do" bin task every weekend. Best part-they dont ask where that item is because its IN THE TO DO BIN!! Examples sitting in my to do bin right now: photos to mail to family I dont want, something for the neighbor, a jellyfish lamp that needs new fake jellyfish to be ordered and set up, a return item to store w/receipt. And lastly, a picture that needs hanging again. They are all items my adhd would love to put in a pile but instead I gave it a home in the to do bin. Its life changing for me. Also, I live in a tiny home of 300 sq ft with kids! I need clear surfaces!! You're amazing fyi!

Glad you are being gentle with yourself & also recognizing certain behaviors that are causing the problem. I have to do the same thing re: putting items right where I’ll see them so that I don’t get distracted & forget. Before I retired, I was a teacher, & I had several different college courses I taught. My typical system was to put a basket or bag (color-coded for different courses) on the floor near my office door so I’d remember what I needed to take home that night. Re: your photos-you need to put them somewhere besides the laundry room b/c what if you had a leak from the washer & ruined them? Also, I put my seasonal wreaths in the attack. I just got some big old nails & hammered them into the rafters. It’s easy to hang the wreathes there. Good job!

Not only are you making faster decisions, and the need to touch everything has lessened ( as compared to almost 3 years ago ) but also your camera presence has changed. The first declutter you seemed like you wanted to entertain the viewers. Your tone is more of teaching than entertaining; the pace and pitch has slowed and lowered as compared to the previous declutter to give us the perspective of learning rather than being entertained.

Thinks that I am taking back to a store ends up in the closet and when I shop in speciality shops for my mother or my partners parents I put it ther to.
The closet is to small to host bags with things that I am taking to some charity shop but if I have one of those, it stays in front of the closet.
Since I started to put all these tings in the same place I find it much easier to remember to take it away and I allways know where it is, when I am preparing to leave the house. It´s so nice that I just can close the door to the closet and it´s all "invisible".
Oh, my reusable bags are stored there to.

I love the positivity of the reality re-accumulating clutter in certain places and recognising that it's about modifying habits to take steps toward the ultimate goal. I'm sooo the same in many ways - I am not diagnosed ADHD - but I relate to many of the symptoms and just try to behaviours that don't help. I have come a long way but find when I get overwhelmed with life my clutter spots are the first to show the signs. As always cheering you on and loving your progress and attitude. I don't always comment (#time) but I'm here. x

A suggestion for dealing with trash that doesn't make it to the bin: create another bin where trash and recycling tends to accumulate. I have a tiny apartment and I have a trash bin in every room. It is much easier to empty 5 bins into one bag and take it out than it is to take the trash all to one bin.

At the beginning of the video when you showed the laundry room, my first thought was "wow, she's kept it up nicely. You can see the floor and the door to the half bath!" Then, you came on the screen to talk about progress not perfection, as if it was in shambles. And I'm thinking, girl!.. i think it looks great! Don't apologize. Just keep on keeping on. From one recovering hoarder to another, you're doing phenomenal.

I store wreaths on over the door wreath hooks on the back of my front hallway closet. I think they're easier to access there, and often they are what I put up first, weeks before I put up the rest of the decor. You might consider putting them in heavy mil clear plastic bags and hanging them on a wall in your basement?

What struck me first was rather than the clutter being back after a year by the way well done was the fact that it was bothering you. Which is massive progress. Just a suggestion on the plastic bags to put them into your car for the boys to do a clear out and into your tub that you use for selling stuff rather than getting rid

Those limbo items should have their own shelf on your "craft" shelf. My limbo area is on my shoe stand next to the front door- so anything that needs to be moved or dealt with is easily noticeable.

The in limbo stuff is the biggest pain for me, too. I’ve got a drawer I’ve tried to put “project” stuff in… 🙈
The one thing that HAS worked is I have a cardboard box that juuuust fits under my bed. I put clothes that I need to fix in it. The box overflowing is my cue to fix some things, and they’re clutter until they’re fixed and a wearable again. So I’m using the container concept a bit, and I also now know where my pocket-sized sewing kit is to do those quick fixes (without being endlessly frustrated that clothes in my drawer have holes in, or that there’s piles everywhere).
The rest of the ongoing projects…. 🤷‍♀️ next to where I’d do them, I guess? I tried putting things in the doorway (so I would have to do them) but I ended up tripping over things.
The tasks this works best with is if I leave something that needs to be washed up/ put in the laundry / taken to another room - I have to grab it before I can get out of the door :)

I think you are amazing 👏.. i like & appreciate all the affirmations you continally give yourself in the process. .. i don't struggle as you, nor have the amt of items as you as i downsized from a 4 bedrm to a loft studio, so it looks so overwhelming to me your space. But i do help my children w/ their cluttered rms in their homes by dealing w/'5' items at a time. Infact, i do the same w/ every task in my own space that gets occasionally out of hand -> "5" items = 5 decisions daily until it is completed. It is amazing how quickly areas can get dealt w/ by just starting sm.

I have one shoebox of silk flowers for each season and holiday. They live way up in my closet. I have vases, teddy bears, and other seasonal items stored away
in other places. We live in a 2BR condo. If you buy something, get rid of something. If I see craft supplies I
want, I think of what I need to pass on to other crafters. I just gave away 4 platters, a cutting board, and a roasting pan. I still have 3 platters, a cutting board,
and two smaller roasting pans. Then I filled a box for the church food pantry and a box for Goodwill. Tina, Al's wife

first--OK you are hoarder, But so much forward progress with that. so i think you are getting that dealt with. really inprssed with your accomplishments..
Second there are messes, but SO MUCH better. You tackle the muddles before they get as bad as the past and you move through it better. you should be pleased with the work you have done.
Third, i am unsure how much is ADHD compared to just being a bit overscheduled. Only you can think that one through. Or maybe overscheduled is part of ADHD?
    Fourth,
You are right you need a place you can set things , 'a home' for projects that are ongoing over 3 to 6 month time period. i had a couple shelves in family den.. i don't have a den anymore and quickly realized I still need that sort of function. Thing is once you create such a "home". MUST be careful to not allow it to accumulate "stuff" also. You are a visual person , really scary how out of sight out of mind can kick in
In you current home that metall sheving in laundry or service room , I would consider dedicate two shelves on the metal shelving. You are in laundry room at least twice a week so seeing the "project of the season" on two shelves would rduce 'forgetting thhe project. Maybe reduce the decor in laundryand lut ashelf on that wall?
OR you are ibto bags. maybe some sturdy hooks to hang bags. a bag per ingoing project or activity for that season? this would not solve that case of books.
Fifth. No matter how "orderly' we are. Life is what it is. I personally kept a little odd cubby in the dining cabinet empty most of the time. But if suddenly guests arriving and ... well the odds and ends got shoveled in there until i had time to clear it. House room looked fine. I know many woman who do or when kids were younngdit something like that. trick is having one empty spot , not to big.

My bad habit was putting those limbo-type ‘‘projects in progress’ on my dresser in our bedroom or the sideboard in the dining room, because they had no real home. Just recently I cleaned off my dresser and put the undone to dos in a big, clear plastic tub I’m calling my ‘backlog box’. Now I put the items on my ‘to do’ list, usually on weekends. I plan to put the to dos from the dining room into it, too. What will I do when the backlog box gets full? Try to whittle down the number of projects in it by actually DOING some of them until they’re finished! Where do I keep this backlog box? Um, on a stack of tubs in our bedroom. I had cleared out one tub, and the stack got shorter. Our cat likes to lie on the tub stack to look out the window, and he was NOT happy that I’d messed with his resting spot. So I made both of us happy! Eventually the tub stack will be gone (poor kitty), but progress, not perfection!

Where do you work on your projects? Perhaps keep a basket at that location. When you're done with a session, load it back into the basket or bin. Only one project out at a time.
Consider putting up some long ladder hooks in your basement and hanging the wreaths on them.
You don't have an office? Where do you do "office" style work? Get a bin or basket at that location. When you're done working that day, load it back into the basket or bin.
Make things easy to put away. Is it too annoying to bring things down to the basement one at a time? How about a basket with handles for things that need to go down. Once it starts getting full, bring the whole basket down and put it all away. While its waiting to go down, its contained in its basket.
I really like that you analyzed WHY the trash was accumulating in the room. View your "failures" instead as opportunities to learn. This room keeps getting messy? WHY? You figured out an important WHY in that room and came up with a potential solution. Excellent, excellent job.

Most videos only show the before, a small part of the process (at 4x speed, of course), and the "big reveal." Thank you so much for slowing down and showing us the process along with the progress! And speaking of progress, you have made so much! I'm so happy for you! 🎉🎉🎉🎉 You really have inspired me to keep making my own progress. I don't feel as overwhelmed as I used to! Again, thank you for keeping it real! 💖

I have agoraphobia. A negative way ive coped with it since i was a child was making my room "smaller" by completly covering all the surfaces in trash, cloths, and junk. I always had a direct path to my door. But no other usable space. I have gotten a lot better since getting a weighted blanket about five years ago, but still struggle to have a "clean" room. I recentlu went over my shelves and put things that i was thinking about getting rid of in a box to see if i would miss them. So far i havent and will probably donate most of them. But most of my other furniture is still very much covered in stuff

so I was wondering about your big black shelf.. I know you will be making a crafting area in the basement so maybe you could put it down there and take your white cube shelf and put it in its place and display your ponies on it? then it would make your laundry area more spacious. I'm love to organize and I'm always thinking of new ways to reorganize lol love your videos! 😘

Yes. Temporary tings are a constant. What they are change. But there is always something going out or coming in or waiting for action. So I recommend making a space for «odds and ends in transit”. ☺️ Just make sure they don’t end up permanent residents.

Plastic bag tip -- make one bag a "bag full of bags" and put the empty bags in there when you have an empty one. Then, when the bag of bags s full. take it to the store for the next time you go there. You can recycle there, or reuse for new purchases. I also keep a bag full of bags to use for cat litter.
