UPDATE: Hendrick Motorsports will appeal the penalty, saying the louvers they were provided did not meet specs and were not actually used in the race. They also say they received inconsistent communication from NASCAR relating to the louvers. Do think their appeal will be successful?
Most definitely. It's kind of the same situation that happened to Brad last season. Got hit with a very early massive penalty, and it took them all season to finish in the top 25. Haley definitely has more speed than RFK had last year at this point, so it's not completely hopeless.
Yes. I wonder if they could appeal saying - we got the louvers from Hendrick and they were already modified. We had not reason to check them. Not our fault. Maybe at least a reduced penalty.
When you're running that much faster than the whole field, and it's consistent in all 4 cars, the rules folks are going to go over everything with a fine toothed comb...kinda bad on Hendrick to get caught on something like this, since it's so obvious. I know they say NASCAR didn't communicate clearly (no doubt they're right about that), but they have been pretty consistent about hammering any team that makes any changes to parts.
I honestly don't get why or how HMS came to this situation? Did they think Nascar would treat them differently, or thought the modification was lawful? Beats me! that's why I believe fans deserve to know more about this and past severe penalties.

But what does really hurt is the points penalties to all teams.
Some reports, not from Hendricks, the parts supplied by NASCAR were crap and didn’t fit correctly and were made to fit by changing the fitment. If this is the case then NASCAR needs to supply correct fitting 9:41 parts.
Nice commentary Eric. I applaud NASCAR for dropping the hammer on Hendrick. A part of me was thinking earlier in the week that NASCAR would find some wiggle room to let them off the hook. Glad it didn't happen. And BTW, it should have rated as honorable mention, but Hamlin got hit with a $50,000 fine and a loss of 25 driver points for intentionally wrecking RC on the last lap.

NASCAR needs to tell all and and put all the reasons on how this would have helped the Hendrick cars. If they would use all the drama the teams cause by trying to gain an advantage and explain maybe more people would start taking an interest and start watching!
It’s about damn time penalties have consequences.
Hate that Denny got penalized points drivers should be allowed to be honest not good for the sport
This is something HMS deserves. Sorry to say but they skate the fine line all the time anyway, probably getting by with more than their fair amount of modifications over the years as I'm sure all teams have. Hope this is a wake up call to lesser teams to not try it.
Nascar would crap a big one if Rick just says I'm done closed the doors and laid everyone off
I thought about that too. He's old and doesn't need this shit. Lol
@@hollygolden9673 yep sell 4 charters put that 40 million and the 400 hundred thousand in his pocket and live good not sure how many teams he supplies engines too but wouldn't be able to race either
This is going to make Hendrick's teams fight for those stage wins to lessen that blow in the playoffs, plus putting them in a huge hole.
Stage wins...what joke. Racing should and always has been about winning races. All this silliness has made NASCAR a clown show. Stages, cookie cutter tracks and cars and the Chase and it just keep getting worse. Once a big fan, I quit watching years ago.
@@marcpennington9938 Thus would beg the question "Why are you watching and replying to a NASCAR themed posting?"
-40 points is crazy! I think haley's season is over from that
If Chevy continues to be as fast as they have been, this won't matter.
True this is going to be a garbage year if Chevy keeps winning
I feel that Hendrick is going to be in the Chase. In fact, I would be surprised if all four cars don't make it in
Well Justin Haley is probably fucked
A couple years ago Harvick won the regular season championship by 120+ points so it’s possible
Just to confirm though... Byron won w/out the hood louvers in question right?
Yes
The took the louvers before any on track activities
The louvres were confiscated before Qualifying. So apparently the louvres were not an advantage because all of the Hendrick car's were still fast.
Even though it was modified I am confused because in practice with them Byron was 20TH without them race winner and THEY PASSED TECH INSPECTION how does this penalty make any sense
@@christianfehr8652 Wrong NASCAR saw something with the louvres before Practice, but still let them practice with them, it was only after practice NASCAR confiscated the louvres.
DO NOT MODIFY MEANS DO NOT MODIFY! Even I can understand that
The appeal process is going to be crazy interesting
And Hendrick might have a point to bring up to the appeal council
They clearly have a point - and SELF REPORTED an issue with quality on these parts to NASCAR. Only to have NASCAR call them out during inspection. This is getting overturned. Maybe not the fines - but the points won't stand. This is mostly to scare the other teams. Unless NASCAR can prove they were tampered with - which I doubt.
@@jimboscthe rule is pretty clear I don’t like their chances unfortunately
@@jimbosc Huh?
Nascar found it in tech before practice and still let them run before taking them. Hendricks definitely has a case to appeal.
@@shaynejenkins446 The rules don't say anything about having to have practiced and/or raced with the modified part. Simply showing up the the track with it on the car is more than enough.
NASCAR is doing everything it can think of to keep Hendrick from winning. New car design, quick cautions, and bogus penalties. It's not going to work, NASCAR.
Largest ever???????!!!!!!!!!!!
Largest for an entire team.
Can you explain how William Byron was able to keep the win and Denny Hamlin had a win taken away from him last year?
So Haley has to gain 40 points before he can have points again? 😳
Sounds like he’s IN THE HOLE
He is not even 36th. Jimmie gas one point and Haley is not even ranked in points.😂
Did you forget that they raced without those and still won and had all 4 in the top 10? It's weird you are wondering if it will affect performance
Glad to see it. The rules are clear and some people think they can still do as they please even if it isn't an out and out performance advantage modification. Cant touch a single source part. Black and white.
Why are these penalties so large when NASCAR took away Hendrick's hood louvers before the race even started? They didn't have an advantage during the race. The penalty should've been all 4 Hendrick cars + Haley start the Phoenix race 2 laps down.
In my opinion, this is WAYY too much when all they did was run practice with it. I don't see any reason to have something THIS BIG.
Well I agree with that, but NASCAR has to make an example and be consistent with NO messing around with part's. And I'm a Hendrick Fan.

He will get his points back after Hendricks wins the appeal
That’s brutal indeed. Seems they still need to get ahead driver aggression as well. Still waiting on losing points for the following season ob deliberate crashes.
okay I see people saying it makes no sense since they didn't race with the parts since NASCAR took them but maybe they did race with them in the race before and that could be why they took them and dropped the hammer... but that is just a spit ball idea based on no real information since I just heard about all this and haven't really caught up on all the information.
It may not affect them performance wise this year, but it could the next couple years too. It could be like 2018&19'. That's a lot of money lost in R&D the field will pass them by
P.S I'm getting tired of this spec-racing, slot car version of Nascar. They HAVE to start letting teams have some kind of options. As seen by all of the part failures we've had at this point.
NASCAR is selling itself as "cost-effective", which means you get spec parts. Getting spec parts means rules have to protect those parts from any sort of silliness teams may wish to do to them.

Im a Hendricks fan. Now they have to rely on Chase Elliott for a championship run the other 3 our fucked
Crew Chiefs don't personally pay the fines. And Mr. H has more money than Gawd and JC combined. He won't even notice the monetary penalties. Kaulig I don't know. Probably that $100k is going to sting. Back up crew chiefs are not that big of a loss on race day either. Main guys can literally phone it in on race day anyway.
But what does really hurt is the points penalties to all teams.
I've been waiting for this episode £ric, give'em hell!
I get my Nascar facts from you Eric. ( Kenny Wallace sounds like he be drinkin)
I hope they are consistent with the severity of penalties going forward.
So you’re commend nascar for taking 100 hard earned points?? You must work for them
Eric is probably working on a second video since the Hamlin/Chastain rivalry is enough of a story all on its own.

If they fine a team in any way they should be required to explain what and how the rules were broken. If they won’t explain in detail to us , the fans that support racing, then I guess I won’t support NASCAR any more. I have been a fan since the early 90s and am getting tired of Nascars heavy hand. What has happened to run what you brung. If they don’t detail just what Hendricks did to be fined such a ridiculous penalty then I might never watch another race. Who is with me ?? Great show Eric…….
I can tell you what they did. They modified a part. What more do you need to know? It doesn't matter how or why they did it, just doing it is illegal.
It had to do with how the louvers fit. I believe HMS and Kaulig may have broken them into 3 pieces somehow instead of 1. I believe it was supposed to be a single piece part.
@@wingracer1614You can modify a part for safety or if NASCAR approves the modification in some way via the manufacturer’s approval. They had permission to make those parts fit, so if they made the modifications based on the manufacturer’s approval, then the penalties might be reduced.

As a massive HMS fan, this totally sucks. There’s no hiding from it, period. I wonder how this gets through the shop with everyone knowing the fines.
