In his late eighties when he published this arrangement of Gabrieli, Malipiero seemed to have lost nothing of the stylish empathy he had for the music. Lovely and satisfying listening experience even if Malipiero himself had been an active supporter of Mussolini. But I try not to think of that as I listen........

I admire Malipiero's music and I've always been puzzled and quite annoyed by his bond with fascist autorities: it's something I reject and I don't fully understand. The matter is more complex and has been deeply investigated by such scholars as John Waterhouse and Fiamma Nicolodi, whose studies I recommend. His free and sophisticated style has nothing to share with the bombastic and vulgar music typical of the Regime, so that he was highly unappreciated and avoided (especially after the prémiere of La favola del figlio Mancato, an opera Mussolini branded as immoral, defeatist "musical diarrhea" ). I think M., similarly to Nobel laureate Pirandello, saw politics as a mean to make great artistic reforms in Italy: they both did not reach such purposes and, year after year, their zeal began to temper. Malipiero's "active support", thus, is not so active as one can imagine. Or, if you prefer, did not last nor brought him great results. By the way, his suffering were not comparable to those of Shostakovich, even though they shared a common destiny of political censorship. Moreover, Malipiero was a little paranoid and suspicious with colleagues, musicians and stage directors...Something that could not help him to gain a good reputation in political and cultural circles (even after 1943). For more than 50 years he lived almost secluded in an old manor in Asolo, in company of dogs, cats and birds. That's quite revelating of his moody personality. But this is more an affair for psychologists than for music historians!

Indeed. Sometimes it's better to ignore political standpoints and simply listen to the music. The French composer, Florent Schmitt and the Norwegian, David Monrad Johansen, were both fascist sympathisers, Johansen especially. Yet I still enjoy their music.
