  • It was almost 24 years ago that the Motoring TV team spent time with paramedics from Toronto's EMS Station 40 to find out how drivers can make their jobs safer and easier.
    Fast forward to 2015, and the Motoring TV team was back at Station 40 to find out what new challenges paramedics face in their jobs.
    (This segment originally appeared on Episode 8 of Motoring 2016.)

    It's worth noting that the outstanding paramedics of Toronto do much more than just drive. The abilities of today's paramedics in Ontario is comparable to an emergency room doctor. Paramedics don't just drive; they perform life saving procedures and have the skill set to deal with a huge number of medical situations.

      please, just drive! EMS song in my head that sounds like a Gary wright song nobody never heard of before gives me chills and has a good beat to it.

      I've heard that about Canadian services. Here in Australia we pride ourselves as having the world's best ambulance services. From what I've read, Toronto residents also have a world class service. You can show a lot of US services how a proper EMS should be structured (financially and training).
      Best wishes from Queensland, Australia.

    Toronto paramedics are awesome. My husband died 13 years ago next month and still to this day many of them when they see me, either as a patient or getting the elevator for them at the nursing home I live in, still ask about him and share kind words about him with me. Talk about good memories and caring people. Shout out to all paramedics, police and firefighters in the Toronto area. You're a great group of people. 👏👏👏👍👍👍🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗💚💚❤

    I must say our paramedics in Toronto Ontario Canada really have great memories. 12 years after my husband Ken died, some haven't heard and inevitably ask me about Ken, by name how he is. I am touched with the 10000000 of people they transport that they remember Ken. God bless you guys. 🚑🚑🚑🚑🚑🚑🚑🇨🇦

    I’ve watched this so many times,
    I watch it so much because it’s heartwarming and this documentary makes people see the difficulties and challenges paramedics deal with on a daily basis, 24/7.

    Worked at TWH Emerg from 1975 to 1989 and knew both Anton Tycodi and his partner Paul Galbraith. Great Ambulance Drivers, then Paramedics. Those were memorable years.

    The two times I had to call 911 the man was so rude but the driver was so nice to me and helped me but the last guy had to hear what I had to say on how he treated me and he didn't even know his partner's name I want to say that when you pick up someone who needs help treat them nicely, I want to say thank you so much to the driver who brought me in on a wheelchair because I was not well and he was so nice to me.

    What is the best advice for a teen who wants to become a paramedic in the future because I’m a teen who wants to become one what is the training you do

    • @cliffw995
      @cliffw995 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Go for it! It’s a great career that’s often fun, challenging, and makes you appreciate life everyday. As for advice, I’d say try and keep your marks up in school if you can. It is quite competitive especially in Ontario, and it’s not abnormal to not get into a paramedic program right away. But don’t give up. In highschool, focus on courses you enjoy, and take the sciences if you can. Biology and math are especially helpful. Also stay healthy and fit. A lot of the job and schooling involves lifting and carrying bags/equipment, and a lot of times, your patient. That takes a toll on the body so being in healthy shape when you start training, and keeping up that healthy lifestyle prolongs your career. Lastly, make sure you have a healthy personality. As a paramedic, one of the greatest ways you can serve is to be empathetic and understanding. You
      See so many people of different backgrounds and beliefs and lifestyles and socioeconomic statuses. Being able to empathize with your patients and people you meet day to day is so important, and maintaining a maturity for the situations you will encounter is so important. Best of luck :)

      Toronto Paramedic Service has 240 units; a minimum of 100 of those are in-service at any given time.

      At least you typically get out of the way there. In a comparable US city, it often seems like every man for himself, plus a lot of ambulances / other emergency vehicles frequently plow through Red lights without looking and cause accidents of their own.
