    The truck was used to tow howitzer 77. The crane is for offloading grenades. You could start the engine in the howitzer from the truck and make the unit 8-wheel drive, able to drive thru 1,5 m snow

    In Sweden we call that truck TGB 40 ( terrängbil 40 ) which is terrain car 40. Those trucks were built for the Swedish Armed Forces during the Cold War. And they still use them today for training purposes.

    The SBAT111 is an artillery tractor, not just a truck for logistical purposes, it was designed specifically to tow the Bofors 155mm FH-77 field howitzer. India still uses them to tow their FH-77B’s.

    That is my favourite vehicle. When I drove them they where brand new, I was a transport commander in training 1977-78 and we got to play with these a lot. Driving them down in muddy holes and then rescue them, driving long distance so far from the regiment we had to have lunch in country side restaurants. We even flew down to Scania in Södertälje and collected brand new once that we drove back 600 km to our regiment.
    It’s such a nice vehicle! I was very luck being picked to be a transport commander always having a vehicle at my disposal and getting to drive tractors with powered trailers lots of different lorries, private cars (from rental companies) snow scooters, motorcycles and several smaller Swedish terrain vehicles (jeeps).

    When I learnt how to drive this truck (called TGB 40 in the Swedish Armed Forces) I was taught it had the first automatic gearbox ever in a Swedish truck. I remember the gearbox being quite fun as it changes gears only depending on the speed and not speed & rev count. So when going downhill you had to use the ultra low gear and then use the throttle to slowly drive downhill. The truck was used to tow 15.5 cm howitzer 77a/b and the mobile coastal artillery 12 cm gun "KARIN". KARIN was in operation until early 2000's and the 77b howitzer was refitted to the new Archer mobile howitzer system which is still in use. Really cool to see this episode as it brings back many sweet memories. Thanks for sharing!

    The crew cab is for up to ten persons. Originally it has 5 seat belts on each bench! It was intended for use when towing the FH77 howitzer, but was used all over when needed.
    Both the SBAT and the SBA(2 axle) can be fitted with the small hiab crane or the crew cab in just 10 minutes with a forklift or a wheel loader. Electrical cables and pipes for heating etc was fitted to all trucks!

  • @MrZnarffy
    @MrZnarffy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The gearbox S is for pullstarting, you can see the scribble above "locks gearbox". Normally you can't pull a car/truck to start it when it has an automatic gearbox, but this locked the gearbox so you could. For those -40C to -50C days in the winter. The ether start was also for extremely cold weather, but you could only use it once, then you had to wait half an hour before trying again. These trucks were amazing, I drove them when I did my military service.. with 6 wheel drive and the difflocks in place, the only things that beat it in terrain was the tank and the other tracked vehicles. And the thermal start stuff, don't get me started on that.. yes you had a blowtorch, and you had to use it like every couple of hours, to heat it and keep it warm.. Everyone hated having to go up in the middle of night to run it...

    • @vetrieska11
      @vetrieska11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      S is not for pullstart, but it locks gear H2 (second speed converter mode). useful when driving offroad in a convoy - you avoid switching gears up and down hundreds times. For tow start is far right switch position called TS (Towstart) .
      Issue with tow starting automatic gearbox is not in "locking". you can't lock it in either way, because to engage clutches you need oil pressure. and it is provided by transmission oil pump. pump is at the transmission input and driven from engine. So dead engine = pump stopped no pressure to engage any speed. BUT this gearbox has a secondary transmission pump driven from output "wheels" side. you switch on TS mode, in engages electrically valve for gear M2 (second speed locked mode). and then you start pulling, when truck reaches about 15 km/h secondary pump provides enough pressure, clutch engages gear M2 and rotates engine which starts quite smoothly. after engine start you immediately switch to N, because on mechanical gear engaged when use brake, engine will stall. Checked it when starting motor in my TGB 45 gived up a few years ago.

    As a lorry driver in the Swedish army, I have experienced significantly worse situations when doing off-road driving. Holes so deep that you landed on the frame at the center of the lorry, with the wheels in holes before and after. And that with the 1964 Volvo Viking (Lastterrängbil 939), with the D67A 125 hp engine. And manual gearbox.

    That was a pretty easy track for that Scania! I hav driven much more difficult tracks with that. The swedish army put 10 blokes in the crew cab. The ether is pumped in with that handle. According to the swedish army instructions you should always have chains on the wheels when drivning in the terrain. You completely missed out on the terrain brake. It is a button on the floor that you step on with your left foot. It puts out a low air pressure to the brakes. You hold down the button when going downhill or on really uneven terrain and regulate the speed with the accelerator. This makes it really easy to drive since the truck stops when you let go of the accelerator even when it is downhill.

    • @danielk70
      @danielk70 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agree, this track would been easy with fully equipped, 10 soldiers, equipment and ammunition on the truck and the howitzer on tow. I think this truck had better tires than the original, those tires was rather hard and somewhat smaller so chains was needed in rough terrain and all type of snowy terrain. When I drove these they was over 20 years old and maybe some of the tires was as well so they was very hard with little traction on snow and in swamps, chains was needed on at lest one axel.
      But I think with modern tires chains isn't needed except for the most extreme conditions.

    • @vetrieska11
      @vetrieska11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Terrain brake working only on low gears - on high gears is switched gear changing strategy to brake with engine. i used it also to switch on gear M2 when driving with a trailer. installed a small switch to disable accelerator pedal switch, and had 5 gears when accelerating - H1>H2>H3>M2>M3 instead of standard pattern H1>H2>H3>M3. because in normal drive there is a huge hole between gear H3 and M3, you need to revv engine to max to engage higher gear.
      and terrain brake also engages a winch brake, in low gears.

    About half of the trucks are still in use in the army and Home Guard, but are to be replaced before its 50th birthday in 2026. The preheater is still used, so a important part of winter training is learning to use the primus kerosene blowtorch used for the preheater. Engine has no glow plugs or "toaster" like newer trucks, but used correctly it will still start in -40°C. The rear boxes under the bed is for storing the tire chains. The chains is not only snow chains but is called slirskydd (anti skid chains) and is very sturdy construction to also be used when driving in terrain.

It is a button you depress with your right foot, to gently traverse big stones or other obstacles without useing normal brakes, useing the automatic gear-box and this terrain-brake only. Of cource it wastes some fuel, but it is extremely smooth. It facilitates to very gently comeing over very large obstacles without bumping the slightest at all. Creeping over like a snake.

    The thermostart is not the one I know. The thermostart I know is a plug in the air intake with its own supply of diesel. Holding a pre-heat button for 20 seconds causes the thermostart plug to get hot and let diesel through it which it ignites - then the flame gets sucked through the engine to light the diesel injected into the cylinders. Very effective they are too !

    U have to use the offroad brake, small round push pedal the floor. Will apply 1 bar brake, and use fullgas at same time.

    Nice to see you get some off-road experience. You might need to get a 4x4 after this because this is typical of the off road sport. Try rock clawing sometime.

    In the military we call it TGB40 (there's a smaller called TGB30), or TerränGBil 40. A really compatible vehicle, to bad most of the Swedish military is for the homeguard that keep them outside without any roof (or protection).
    Bit misleading with the "GPS" straight on the steering wheel.
    Also the "S" on the gear selector means "sakta" or slow in English (not for a trailer, it's just for going slow (limits the gearbox from changing gears, its an automatic)), there's a hidden one that's not shown that well in the video. Think it's called "BOG", referring to Swedish "Bogsering", for towing it to start (ex. the starter is broken and can't be started on its own, cause its an auto).
    The second gear selector is two modes, think its V and T for VÄG and TERRÄNG, T limits the gearbox from shifting to a higher gear than second for driving in terrain.
    (Sorry for bad English)

    Hi! Nice video 😄
    I've heard about a terrain-brake which is used instead of the main airpressure brakes. It brakes the car in terrain in a smooth way without heat up the brakes. I believe it is placed on the floor down below the drivers air inlet. It looks like a button which you operate with your left foot.
    I haven't operated the Tgb 30/40 myself, just been a passenger. I use to drive the smaller Tgb 11, 13, 20 which is all from Volvo 🙂

    • @lokis7230
      @lokis7230 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The terrain brake is the normal brake applied with a low air pressure with the button on the floor. The switch V / T has to be in T=terräng (terrain). If it's in V=väg (road) the button function is engine brake. The converter is locked and the gear box goes to a lower gear.
      The T mode also engages the front wheel drive and low gear in the distribution box.

      @@lokis7230 That's great, an answer from one who's familiar to the vehicle and could explain it in a better way 👍🏻
      I've just drove the Volvos 🙂🇸🇪

      @@lokis7230 And in low mode terrain brake is also a winch brake.
      i used is in high gear to drive uphill in M2 gear when needed. put an additional switch disabling accelerator switch to prevent return to normal gear change when you push throttle again. and it worked well especially with higeher load - driving uphill faster and less fuel because of lockup clutch engaged.

    The winch-drum at the centre of the vehicle, is a perfect opportunity for you to loose all of your fingers, except maybe the thumbs, if not following the instructions...
