Phonics is a great place to start, but also include vocabulary. Check out my recent post called role play

ng should be a single nasal sound without g sound, right?

Correct, it is a single nasal sonorant sound and is counted as a single sound when doing sound counting exercises. For example, the suffix /ing/ is counted as 2 sounds, not 3.
