    As someone who played the game and probably one of the few who actually enjoyed it, it's nice that they're deviating from the original story. They've already been making changes and seeing Velvet in the opening promises that.

      I actually quite liked the game too, though I've heard it's quite popular in the US and it was in Japan where it was a bit more lukewarm. I think a lot of why I personally liked has to do with Sorey (And Mikleo and Lailah), he's the first Tales protagonist I've really related too. He's a bibliophile, gay (I'm thoroughly convinced at least. It seems to be less subtext more actual text IMO and surprisingly well done for an anime, assuming it's canon), an anthropology nerd, he regularly waxes poetic, I could be describing myself XD and while I wouldn't say he has the strongest character arc, its honestly near non-existent, he's consistently a very sweet, likable guy. Plus the battle system's a lot of fun
      I'm excited to hear the anime is out, I've been looking forward to it for a long time!

    I hate it when people say they hate 'tales of Zesteria' just because it has a generic story. Because well, all 'tales of' have generic characters and stories. I enjoyed Zesteria just as much as any other game.

      Kapatana Dark I agree, i'm still playing it and it's my first tales of game, and i'm enjoying it a lot, i don't get the people saying that it's boring, i really enjoy every skit and cutscene for the characters. Not always different is good, sometimes we just need a generic story.

    Wow I'm quite surprised by your recommendation, I never even heard of the game series before seeing this anime. I watched episode 0 and I was immediately hooked. I think it's a great anime. However, I can only be honest and say that you know more about reviewing anime than I do, so I respect the recommendation.

      You should really play the series, it's fantastic for the most part, most people agree that Tales of Vesparia for the 360 (remade for the PS3 but in Japan only) or Tales of the Abyss (for PS2 and 3DS) are the better games in the series, but Symphonia might be easier to get since it was re-released on steam and on the PS3 and is still great, just dated.

When I first watched it, I fell in love with it, and was so intrigued and hooked up, I watched the entire season in less than one day. I appreciate your recommendation, but in opinion I don't think you should judge a show unless you watch the whole thing first.

      If you watched the anime I definitely recommend you go watch or play the game! I liked the anime and then ended up watching a playthrough of the game and I enjoyed it so much more! The anime deviates on the story a lot and skips some of my favorite story arks, Its so enjoyable being with the characters on their journey and getting to know them better. Definitely a series I revisit a lot!

    I've never played any of the tales games and I found that it makes the anime MORE enjoyable due to the fact that I'm not comparing it to the other tales games. not to mention, I'm a sucker for ufotable's animation and that opening is one of the best ones I've seen all year imho.

  • @KitsuneZeal

    One of the points that you mentioned is why they are releasing the story of their most recent tales game. I think the reason this anime is coming out is the fact that it ties in to Berseria since the main girl is in the opening credits. I think the anime for Tales of Zestiria is more to catch people up or promote Tales of Berseria since they did come out and say that they are connected or at least in the same world.

    I just watched the 4th episode and I think I get the joke. So the Shepherd is this amazing guy who had single handily saved the world along time ago, but that's the lie. The Shepherd is not alone on his quest he has his Seraphim buddies with him, but the only thing Humans of that time could see is a single guy stopping bad thing from happening and so they wrote down what they saw.
    I haven't played the game or read the manga so if everyone already knows this then I'm sorry for repeating what everyone already knows. But I found it a great plot point and just wanted to point it out.

    The purpose of this Anime is to promote their upcoming game, Tales of Berseria. Tales of Berseria is set 1000s of years before the events of Tales of Zestiria. It's kind of like a prologue. Velvet, the protagonist of Berseria, will appear in the Anime for 2 episodes (5 and 6).

  • @ProPinkist
    @ProPinkist 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Honestly Zestiria is my third favorite Tales game I've played, having played about eight of them, but I know that it _does_ seem pretty cliche and unoriginal to someone who doesn't know how good Tales can be. Even a lot of Tales fans themselves didn't like Zestiria, which kinda bums me out, but yeah. Tbh there's one character that will be introduced later that makes experiencing the story worthwhile; he's so great and I hope his arc is fleshed out more in this anime because he's just wonderful ugh.
    The main reason they wanted to do this anime, though, to answer you, is to advertise Tales of Berseria, which is a direct prequel to Zestiria and which will have tomorrow and next weeks' episodes solely dedicated to it. It honestly really bugs me that they're doing this, because Zestiria's story is going to need all the time it can get (everyone keeps saying that things have been majorly changed so far, but....... not.... really? The main plot point of Sorey becoming the Shepherd still happened, just with different things going on in the background. I doubt we'll see any massive, _massive_ changes), and people who already are meh about the show are going to be even _more_ turned off by the ridiculous transition here from Zestiria to events that took place like 2000 years ago that have no relevance whatsoever just because Bamco wants to advertise (aka spoil) Berseria. *sigh*

  • @VashGamer94

    I really did enjoy Zestiria last year, but I can see why some people wouldn't like it as much as other Tales titles. If there's one thing I want this anime to do right is the characters. The character dynamic in Zestiria is probably my favorite or 2nd favorite in the entire series next to Abyss and Xillia.

    I like Zestiria, maybe it's not overly original as there are cliché elements, but for the child in me I like it. I've played the game and as you go further there are more cut scenes filled with talking that do seem to drag an awful lot. In terms of the anime it is beautiful animation and the story does fast track a bit (but the beginning of the game is a lot of steady pacing and tutorials.) Episode 5 is set to apparently have a crossover with Berseria which will throw the whole anime narrative into something different from the game, supposedly. In which depending on people's opinion of the original game's storyline could be for better or for worse.
    For someone reading this who haven't seen or played anything Tales related then depending on whether you vaguely enjoy fantasy genres or any interest in the legend of King Arthur, then give Tales of Zestiria: The X a try. The dub is being released in the near future so if you don't want to fully concentrate on it then there's that too.

      +Berserker Sure its story may not be the height of originality, nor may its writing be the most polished, but it's a fun fantasy-style epic adventure, and that's all I ask of it really. Things don't have to be perfect for them to be enjoyable. :

    It's worth considering that certain parts of the story will definitely be different than the game because of the presence of Velvet from Bersaria, whom never appeared in Zesteria yet seems to have a prominent presence in the anime, at least if the opening is anything to go by. having played through the entirety of Zesteria I'm excited to see how she comes into play in this adaptation

  • @DevilHunter1994

    "Never liked the gameplay of the actual game, but was intrigued by the story" I actually had the same reaction to Symphonia. Loved the story, but having played several later Tales of games beforehand, movement in combat for that game felt so off to me and I could never get used to the actual gameplay. The characters and story were great though. As for changing the story of Zesteria, there was a black haired girl fighting Sorey in the opening that I do not remember from the game (though it has been awhile since I played it) and she looks kinda like the main character from Beseria. So yeah....that's something.

  • @davidnishball660

  • @shadowmaksim
    @shadowmaksim 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Surprisingly enough, I think I liked the anime adaption quite the bit more than the game.
    While it definitely lacks a lot of the finer details that you can out of the game, not to mention it still has it's own share of flaws as well, it just feels like a better put together experience. While a bit on the slower end, the pacing I found to be much better handled (outside of the two "Berseria" episodes which just kind of go nowhere and don' serve any purpose to the overall story progression, basically just a random ad for the game) and some of the changes to events did wonders to create a more cohesive experience. I even swear that some of the characters seem to display more personality than their game counterparts somehow, despite having less overall screen time than their game counterparts so far.
    I guess the whole phrase "skip the game, just watch the anime" which is getting thrown around isn’t that far off.

      Ethan ONan i think the drama in xillia 1 & 2 had bit more punch to it then symphonia, xillia 1's mid point on jude's story was really rough and 2 made my cry a bit.

    I'm a decent ways into the game myself, and....I think the reason most people criticize the story is because it IS so cliche, without being too much of a deconstruction like previous games. As far as the gameplay goes, there is a decided improvement once you unlock the Free and Free battle skill, which is kind of annoying to unlock (and frankly it is the way the game SHOULD have been from the beginning) but it allows you to free run without holding the left trigger.
    I dunno, I noticed my enjoyment of the game skyrocket once I got that skill and I got a decent ways in. The story, like you said, is more intriguing than it is good, and really, the meat of the experience is in how the characters interact. Y'know.....once you HAVE all the characters.

  • @themettking
    @themettking 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Trying not to spoil, but one of the major themes of the game was journey over destination. At one point later on, a major NPC will stop you in the story until you collect every single backstory item in the game. While these do reveal a major spoiler for how the game's story got to the point it is and added the traditional Tales trademark "Feel Bad for the Big Bad," it doesn't tell you where any of them are unless you've been talking to various NPCs or have just been looking around for side areas. And no, it doesn't stop being cliché after that either.

      If only they could rerelease the game to have the events in anime occur in the game AND to add a new ending. You know those Earthen Historia things you collect throughout the game to see Heldalf's past? they should make more of those in a bunch of secret areas and if you collect all of them, you would save Heldalf after the final battle instead of killing him.

    The anime is somehow going to work in the main character from Breseria. So it is still promotional material. Funny story, at AX they did a Tales of panel, in which they said Tales of Breseria is a play off of the word breserk. So they took the word berserk and made it into a "Tales of" sounding word. I thought that was rather silly.

    I really wish you didn't just skip talking about the characters. What we have seen so far I've really found enjoyable. Especially Alisha who right from episode 0 is given pretty solid motivation for wanting to find the Shepherd. She also doesn't fall into a lot of anime cliches that would have her blushing all the time around Sorey and acting tsundere-ish.
    Sorey also is really solid off the bat. At first he comes across as your typical upbeat protagonist but whereas most characters like him are really incompetent in the start Sorey manages to kick ass while still coming across as innocent.

    Tales of Berseria and Zestiria are actually linked, with Berseria taking place centuries earlier.
    There was one change that bugged me. A character death in the video game, which was included in the OVA, but averted in this version.

    I've only ever watched the anime and am enjoying it immensely. Though the game seems to be quite lacking from what I've read, I heard that the anime is taking on a different approach so I guess it's something to look forward to ?
    The story might be Cliché but I enjoy watching the characters and visuals , after all it's just 7 episodes ( counting out Berseria) , there's like 15++ episodes leftover for it to develop, so as long as I'm enjoying it, why the hell not lmao

    Speaking of Excalibur-y stories... I think it might be nice if instead of it being the sign of a "prophesised king" so much as a "King Maker" who possesses both the ability to assure a king's rise to power, but also possesses the right qualities to know who would be the right king to choose. It's hard to explain how I imagine that would be better, but if nothing else, it would make for more interesting dynamics than just the "divine rule" shtick.

    y'know sometimes the most simplest and cliche things are the best. It gets you off from any convoluted ideas or plot and is making you expected what it will give but execute it in a very fun and enjoying way(as for this anime it's gotta be the interaction between characters and the amazing visuals). Well in the end that's what i think, probably just because of how lazy i am to even be picky about what i'd like ;P

    I feel as someone who's played through the game far more times than I probably should and have watched the show to its completion, I'm going to point out a couple of things without giving too much of spoiler. And for those who don't want anything spoiled and for some reason haven't watched the show or played the game...this probably isn't for you, so move along.
    I will say that the main faults with the original game and the show is the actual story because of how it falls into clichés a lot of the time. But it's the fresh take of the King Arthur story combined with the odd set of characters which makes it an amazing ride of entertainment. The gameplay hands down could've been improved upon A LOT (something Berseria actually fixed in my opinion), so watching a show that focuses zero on actual gameplay mechanics is, a breath of fresh air. At least for someone who constantly have issues with the camera during battles (because what the hell namco).
    The story in the show however compared to the game, does something which (again in my opinion), really makes the Tales of franchise shine. It brings together ties not only with the prequel that is Berseria, but it only brings up the key elements that sort of are just...missing. Berseria features an extra thing where you head out to explore areas beyond the original continent the story takes place on. Where you find items and treasures specific to other games in the franchise. While it's a fun easter egg, the show Tales of Zestiria the X touches upon this one step further, with an overview of memorable places such as Yggdrasil, the tree of life from both Tales of Symphonia and Phantasia. It ties together the series in an exciting new way that only made me want to watch it anew. And the show honestly couldn't have been any better than it was on the 26 episodes that it recieved, with the actual Japanese cast in the game being in the show with exception of one.
    Things just, feel far more enjoyable for anyone who's played the game to its completion. Just a few hours in isn't going to give anything of what the 40 hour (plus 15 hour bonus) gameplay has to offer. It's well worth the time and perfect for anyone loving the franchise enough to wish to try on a completionist run of the game.
    TL;DR: The show is great, go watch it if you like the Tales of Franchise. Seriously.

    Play Berseria and you'll realize just how naive Sorey and his friends are. Man that scene of him pulling the sword and becoming the "shepherd" is seen in an entirely different light when playing Berseria.

  • @_zurr

    I think the animation itself isn't that great, as with the other ufotable works. It's serviceable, even good sometimes, but what really gives their shows the quality we see is the digital effects team. They really know how to take the good animation and make it absolutely amazing. That dragon is just one example of this, the backgrounds are another.

  • @jupiterivan3433

    I don't know much about Zesteria. But I have played a few Tales games. One thing I've noticed is that the Tales games never seem to have the best stories. There may be some better stories in the bunch (I've never played Symphonia so don't crucify me if this one has a godlike story or something), but to me Tales wasn't about the story, it was about the characters. Vesperia is my favorite, by far, not because of the story. Yuri as a main character is just so interesting with many different layers to him. He's a nice guy, but isn't above doing something dirty if it means protecting people. Flynn is similar, wanting to protect people in his own way, but will do it in a way that's righteous. In a world that's corrupt that's harder to do than he thinks. The story never got me.
    SPOILER
    Eh this pink haired girl is special and will save the world or some nonsense.
    Abyss had a better story, but its characters weren't super great. They weren't bad, but damn Luke in the first half of the game... wanted to tear out his voice box. Jade on the other hand... damn he was fun.

    • @thetimmon
      @thetimmon 8 ปีที่แล้ว

Then I heard the Lady of the Lake (or is it Lady in the Lake, I forget) and I knew right away what this was. Plus, the dude who pulls it out has his own Merlin with him.
    I did like the idea of the Lady of the Lake being with the main dude I could never remember the name of (was it Arthur or just someone new to represent Arthur?) and acting as his guidance. That’s a cool idea.

  • @turquoisemoon3654
    @turquoisemoon3654 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Honestly, it's like hearing my dad say that Astroboy, Mazinger-Z, and Daimos were THE anime? Symphonia, Abyss, and Vesperia fans are kinda boring to listen to... their reviews always end with high praises for the old games that they have lots of nostalgia on... but you see new players in the field don;t share that POV. I've seen the older games and I found them typical, if not boring. I love Zestiria because the sarcasm and jokes and dialogues between the characters felt fresh and less contrived than the older Tales of games.
    Besides, the music and the graphics of Zesty are a masterpiece on their own. Sorey is my type of hero and yeah, while the Arthurian legend is not new, there are so many games and stories that made it work really well. I love the twist they put into it by combining it with seraphim lore. So there you have it, I love this anime!

  • @KoiPuff
    @KoiPuff 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I could handle the gameplay of the game except for two things 1) Forced backtracking when the warp abilities would disappear with no rhyme or reason. 2) Rose. Didn't like her as a character and I liked her even less because she was forced as a permanent member of the fighting party.
    "Hey! You know this super rare ability that only the Shepherd has? Well this random girl has it too!" Rose by far was the weakest character for me and I felt dragged down by her presence in every fight. And when I did get a reprieve from her I was down to one fighter.

    • @SiegheartGC
      @SiegheartGC 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      as for gameplay the camera was also really bad in narrow spaces during combat.
      As well as for Rose, you mean resonance, it's like an innate ability some humans have who have a stronger sense in malevolence as well as hearing and seeing seraphims. Rose had strong resonance because of Dezel most likely, and sorey has it long before e became shepherd. Which means it's not a shepherd-only thing. If you are talking about armatization.. I think any squires are able to amartize after getting used to fighting with seraphims...

    • @KoiPuff
      @KoiPuff 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jun Ha The armitization was hyped up as something only the Shepard could do. They bring it up to explain why the Princess can't do it. ("Don't feel bad, it's the Shepards gift after all.") Then when Rose does it (without any of the side effects that Sorey had to deal with) it's hand waved off as "Oh, Dezel was with her so long she's used to it." No, that's lazy writing. And she's stong enough to Armitize straight away but was completely unable to detect Dezel's presence for years?

    • @SiegheartGC
      @SiegheartGC 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      OnigiriPuff true but there was no side effects from armatizing from what I remember? Whether she realized or not she was used to dezel's power helping her. In a sense she is influenced and at least probably has a sense of it. That being said it was lazy and not well explained like you said. might also be the reason rhat she got so scared first when Lailah tried to talk to her when she wasnt a squire yet because she always knew at least subconsciously something was around with her that she could not see like feeling the presence of Dezel. But because she could not see the presence she feared it was a ghost or something

    • @KoiPuff
      @KoiPuff 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jun Ha The first few times Sorey fuses with Miklio and... red one (can't remember her name right now, starts with an L?) the skits at the inns are all about how tired and extra hungry Sorey is afterwards. And Red is just like "Eh, you'll get used to it." But the girl who didn't even have enough power to hear them let alone see the spirits is a-okay. Every thing about her character annoyed me. Anything bad she does is down played and even when it goes against everything Sorey stands for its shrugged off. Sorey explicitly tells her not to kill someone. She says "Yeah, you're not the boss of me." and kills them anyway. Sorey's reaction? "Hurmph, you shouldn't have killed him... *sulks for a day and is back to joking with her next scene*"

    • @SiegheartGC
      @SiegheartGC 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      OnigiriPuff lol true dat. I see that side effect was what you were talking about. Yeah the killing with Rose was like really strange. But most killings was because they couldn't be purified right? Well in any case, Sorey's reaction to Rose doing that was like what you said. It didn't make sense at all. Let's hope Berseria is better than this by far :P

    GRArkada, the tale series does have some history of having slow character development. Tales of the abyss main character to start is a whinny selfish ass to the point some reviewers negatively reviewed the game without finishing it or before they even got far enough into the story. It has one of the best character stories even if main plot is cliche like Zestiria. So hopefully it will get better from a character perspective.
    P.S. if you haven't played Tales of the Abyss you should really try it out (my personal favorite) :P
