Jennifer, this was an interesting video. I have seen Peco under-mount solenoid switch motors come with that pin extension collar and rod as well. What I like about the one you demonstrated is that is is set up with wires and mounting flanges already installed.

Hi Jennifer that for this video I found it very informative in as much I brought some for a trial. Found them easy to install but I did find it somewhat difficult to insert the wires laying on your back under the baseboard. I was struggling with my PM1 seep point motors as they have a mechanical frog change mechanism and with out a CDU I found that they only worked some of the time.I have now changed all my point motors to surfaced fixed. The only disadvantage was the size of the surface fixed motor. I will paint them sometime to tone them down & hopefully make them less obtrusive.

Nice presentation. It's something I need to look into soon. Thank you for the clear advice of the solenoids et.c. but for the clear instructions on the packaging too. It also answered a question I had in being DC compatible too. Even the control units provide a greater array of functions than the basic lever-and-passing-contact switching. It should relieve a lot of wiring elsewhere too. Cheers!

I've been into H. O. Scale and N Scale for quite a few years now. I'm still operating in DC, but I've heard a lot of pros and cons about the surface mounted switch motors/coils, and after building an N scale layout, I used the Atlas #6 turnouts, which seems to work well.
The prototype perfectionists used to turn their nose up at seeing those surface mounted units, and I kinda felt bad, but then I got a conducted tour of the big yard at Barstow California in 1997. I saw a lot of big motors and extra equipment running those turnouts, so I left mine in place. I placed ballast around them and painted the equipment silver to match the signals.

Currently building my first layout and it was a toss up between these or the Peco points and accessory switch to purchase last year. Had no end of problems in getting the accessory switches to switch the polarity even when they were moving smoothly. So moving on to my diesel yard I thought I’d try these new options out. Did a trial with one yesterday on a spare piece of board. Although I could run a train on it, as I didn’t want to cut the pin yet, it appeared to sway the polarity at the frog when I tested it with a multiple meter. The only problem I found, other than getting that tiny collar to grip the pin, was that if your boards aren’t thick enough the collar on the pin hits the hole in the switching bar. Only solution was to add an additional thin piece of board under the pint to move the point motor a few millimetres away from the bar. Other than that it worked ok. Will now look to purchase a few more to complete the yard. Thanks for the vide. 👍

I have 15 of the surface mount point motors, I have found however that they only in the orientation as shown in the video. If you try the other eye hole on the left they cross bar has too much flex an pops off the peco point and sometimes the cam jams inside. They could also do with the wiring plugged into the back of the motor rather than soldered straight on so they could be replaced easily if access under the board is impossible.

Excellent vido Jenny. Clear, concise and well articulated. I have one or two side mounted motors where I need a solution to frog polarity changes and which is capable of lighting LED's on my control panel. Couple of things: actually solenoid points have been on mainstream train track points for well over a century, but more relevant: I honestly think for the set up is what tillig has had for many years, an actual geared motor with everything self enclosed.
Train triggered turnouts have been available for over 90 years in 3 rail, and a young half century for 2 rail.
Lovely though this is, is it that much of a forward?

Hi, I'm setting up a first ever layout in DC and never used point motors before. With the line side point motor do I actually need a CDU ? Can I wire it through an on/off/on switch directly from the auxillary 12 volt supply from my hornby controller ?

    • @JenniferEKirk
      @JenniferEKirk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

The solenoid motors must be used with a CDU. If you use them direct from the power supply they will burn out.
The module shown in this video contains a CDU and can bne used on DCC to make the solenoid work with a digital system, or on DC where it is powered by a 12V regulated DC supply and the point motor is changed via a momentarty switch that you need to attach to the switch inputs on the module.

As an absolute newby to model railways I have been watching your many video tutorials and find them very informative and instructional.
I am a young 67 year old, I understand electronics and can manage most things.
I did enjoy your video on the Rails of Sheffield point motors and decoders that were developed for them by DCC Concepts.
From this video I purchased a few.
You said on the video that it is possible to connect 2 points.
    Now I need help.
I have connected 2 points face to face, to change track. I can get the points to change at the same time, off one switch and connected to the same decoder, but I can only get the polarity correct on one set of points, hence I get a short when going to the next point.
I have called DCC Concepts, they told me to change wires round, but that doesn’t work.
Are you able to assist, as I am struggling to work this one out and I’m sure you have the knowledge to help me.

I bought few of these on the strength if this video but I've had nothing but trouble with them. I'm using the under the board solenoid and connecting I via the tabs directly to PECO code 100 points (ST-E91). The solenoid barely twitches and won't throw the point at all! I've tried with several points, several motors, and several of the boards but none of them work properly.
I'm assuming it's something I'm doing wrong but the instructions are simple and I've watched the video several times, checking the wiring extensively. They throw the bar when not connected to the track but once connected stop working. If I connect a Peco brand point motor directly, without the accessory board then I can get it mostly working but it seems like there's some problem either with the Peco points combined with these solenoids or the accessory board doesn't provide enough oomph to throw the point.
Has anyone else experienced difficulty with code 100 setrack points?

Now it might just be me, and I’m sorry if it is, but since you have joined DCC Concepts I feel your descriptions and reviews are more guarded. E.g. “other point motor manufacturers”.
