I would love to watch a video prepared by you about how to synthesize information from different sources and create a unique coherent and cohesive piece of writing!

Thank you Dr.McKee! Im so glad you made this video. I have been paraphrasing using ChatGPT and was wondering that what are the ethical guidelines.

Our team completed a lengthy final year project report (40+ pages) as graduate students. We're now preparing a research paper based on this project for publication, but the publisher requires a concise format of only 8-12 pages. Can AI tools be used to efficiently reduce word count and paraphrase the content while still maintaining originality and avoiding plagiarism concerns? Will such AI-generated content be acceptable for publication? Please provide a clear and definitive answer on whether AI is a viable approach to meet the publisher's requirements and ensure publication success.

You need to check with the journal to see if they will allow use of AI to streamline your manuscript. But reduction of a paper from 40+ to 8-12 pages will require some decisions about what is the most important material to include and what can be omitted. Those decisions will require human input.

Dear Karen. It seems there is a subtle line between what is plagiarism and what is not. For instance, suppose ChatGPT generates a nice phrase about a research topic we are investigating. Suppose we wish to add the phrase idea into our paper. Suppose we decide to rephrase that sentence, changing some words, and even changing the Grammar structure. So we have a new phrase, a direct modificarion of the one we got from ChatGPT. Is it plagiarism? Please, can you elaborate on that, perhaps giving examples according to your personal experience? I would love to see a video like that, hearing your comments about the limits of use of ChatGPT in academia. Thanks.

Alessandro, thanks for your comment. Generally, I don't think minor text suggestions (a sentence or two) by ChatGPT are any different from those made by a human reviewer, especially if you modify it further to create a new sentence. We've all had a reviewer or editor suggest rephrasing a passage to improve clarity. Using their suggestion is not plagiarism (although you would likely thank them for their contribution in the acknowledgements). Similarly, you might say in the acknowledgements that ChatGPT was used to improve the writing or English language (assuming the journal allows it). I'll see if I can come up with a video that addresses this issue.

Me esforzaré por no usar inteligencia artificial en la escrita de mis artículos científicos. Ahora como controlar los trabajos encargados en la Universidad. Desde donde estoy, será sencillo, porque, los alumnos tienen limitaciones en la escrita y si el trabajo está bien escrito, dudaré del contenido de la información y mi salida será evaluarlo oralmente, allí podré certificar si realmente escribió el trabajo

You can if the journal allows the use of AI to help improve the writing. Check the instructions or ask the editor.
